Egypt army urges conciliation after Morsi overthrow Posted: CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt's military on Thursday urged the country to reconcile and avoid revenge attacks after it toppled president Mohamed Morsi in a popularly backed move that has outraged the Islamist's supporters. The armed forces believe that the forgiving nature and manners of the Egyptian people, and the eternal values of Islam, do not allow us to turn to revenge and gloating, it said in a statement.Meanwhile, an alliance of Islamist parties and movements including ousted president Mohamed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood has called for peaceful protests on Friday to denounce the military's overthrow of the Islamist president. The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy called for peaceful protests on Friday in all of Egypt's provinces to denounce the military coup against legitimacy and in support of the legitimacy of President Morsi.
Ban urges speedy resumption of Egypt civilian rule Posted: COPENHAGEN (AFP) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday said civilian rule in Egypt should be resumed as soon as possible, and that the country's future leadership should reflect the Egyptian people's will.It is a volatile situation (and) it is not clear where we are heading, Ban told journalists in Copenhagen, adding that inclusivity was key to any solution of the country's woes.Cautioning that army interference is not consistent with democratic principles, the secretary general said Egyptians needed to find common ground to move forward... to find a truly democratic and prosperous way. They must do so without any threats or harassment and (while) protecting the freedom of speech and the freedom of assembly, he said. Those are the basic principles of a democracy, he added. It was a message he would deliver in person to Egyptian leaders, he said, without specifying whether he planned to travel to Egypt.I am going to speak to some of the leadership in the Egyptian government later Thursday, he said.Ban was in Copenhagen to inaugurate a new UN City complex that will house the offices of several UN organisations.World leaders on Thursday called for a return to democracy in Egypt after the military ousted president Mohamed Morsi, but many took a pragmatic stance and stopped short of condemning the overthrow of the Islamist leader.US President Barack Obama was among those who shied away from calling the events a coup while urging a quick return to elected civilian government in Egypt.
Suicide bomber in Iraq kills 2 police, wounds 19 Posted: BAGHDAD (AP) - An Iraqi official says a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into police patrolling a city north of the Iraqi capital, killing two police.Shalal Abdool, mayor of Tuz Khormato, says four police and 15 civilians were also wounded in the Thursday attack, 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad.Iraq has been experiencing one of its deadliest waves of violence in recent years, raising fears that the country is heading toward a new round of sectarian conflict like that which pushed it to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.The attack comes a day after suicide attacks, bombings and shootings killed at least 17 people across the country.
Italy says cannot grant Snowden asylum Posted: ROME (AFP) - Italy cannot accept an asylum request from former US intelligence analyst Edward Snowden because there are no legal or political conditions to do so, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said Thursday. The request for political asylum was lodged two days ago via a fax sent to the Italian embassy, Bonino said in an address to parliament. The rules require that the asylum-seeker needs to present himself personally either to the embassy or on Italian territory, she said. The conditions are not there to accept it, nor is it possible for the Italian government from a political point of view, she said.Snowden is believed to have been stuck in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since June 23, as he tries to avoid US justice for leaking details about a vast US electronic surveillance programme.Snowden has requested asylum in 21 countries.
US airlines cancel Mexico flights due to volcano Posted: MEXICO CITY (AP) - Airport officials say at least six U.S. airlines have canceled more than 40 flights into and out of Mexico City and Toluca airports after the Popocatepetl volcano spewed out ash, steam and glowing rocks.Mexico City airport spokesman Jorge Gomez says U.S. Airways, Delta, United, American and Alaska Airlines canceled 47 flights as a precaution. But he says the airport otherwise continues to operate normally and that no ash has reached the area.At nearby Toluca airport, Spirit Airlines canceled flights from Dallas and Fort Lauderdale.Toluca airport spokesman Alejandro Munoz says the airport also continues to operate normally.Authorities registered several tremors Tuesday at the 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) volcano, which has been spraying a fountain of hot rock and ash for the last 24 hours.
Lisicki and Bartoli reach Wimbledon final Posted: LONDON (AP) - Sabine Lisicki advanced to her first Wimbledon final a couple of hours after Marion Bartoli reached her second.Lisicki, a 2011 semifinalist at the All England Club, beat fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 2-6, 9-7 Thursday on Centre Court, overpowering her opponent at the start and then hanging on at the end.I just fought with all my heart, Lisicki said. I believed that I could still win no matter what the score was.Bartoli took control early and never let up in a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kirsten Flipkens.Bartoli also reached the Wimbledon final in 2007, losing to Venus Williams in straight sets.Saturday's final will be the second at Wimbledon in the 45-year Open era between two women who have never won a Grand Slam title. Lisicki may have the edge in that match with a 3-1 record against Bartoli, including a quarterfinal win at Wimbledon in 2011 in their last meeting.Lisicki, who beat defending champion Serena Williams in the fourth round, dictated play in the first set by winning 22 of her 30 points on serve and breaking once. But her serve deserted her after that.Once the second set started, Radwanska came alive and Lisicki crumpled.Lisicki lost all four of her service games, with the lowlight coming in the final game of the second set. Leading 30-0, Lisicki lost four straight points, including two double-faults.In the third, Lisicki was again broken early but finally held to make it 3-1 and then broke to get back on serve. Both players held serve until Lisicki got the deciding break in the 15th game when Radwanska hit a volley long.A few minutes earlier, Radwanska had been two points from victory. The two were tied at 30-30 and later at deuce in the 12th game with Radwanska leading 6-5.Lisicki said her big win over Serena Williams helped her Thursday.I thought, 'I've done it against Serena so you can do it today as well, just hang in there,' Lisicki said. It gave me so much confidence and I'm just so, so happy I was able to finish it.Bartoli wasted little time in her match, dancing and grunting her way to victory over the 20th-seeded Belgian who was playing in her first major semifinal.I played great. I executed very well. I hit lobs, passing shots, winners, returns, everything worked out perfectly, said Bartoli, who won in 62 minutes. When I fell on the grass after match point, it was just so emotional. I dreamed about that moment, about returning to the Wimbledon final.Amelie Mauresmo, the 2006 Wimbledon champion who now coaches France's Fed Cup team, was in the stands for the early match and had plenty of praise for Bartoli. She just played a great match, definitely the best match of the tournament for her, Mauresmo said. Marion put huge pressure on her right from the beginning, first of all returning very well, serving better, which she had to do today.Bartoli was pumped from the start on Centre Court, mixing two-handed backhands and forehands with little hops between points, as she usually does.In the first set, she faced only one break point, nearly putting Flipkens back on serve in the third game. But despite a double-fault and a backhand into the net to eventually get behind 30-40, Bartoli dug herself out of the hole and finished the game with the first of her five aces.I tried my slices. She didn't have any problem with that, Flipkens said. I tried the dropshot. She got it. I played a passing, she came to the net. I tried a lob. I tried everything, actually.Flipkens, who again took the court with her right knee taped, called for a trainer after being broken for the second straight time at the start of the second set. The trainer added tape to the knee while Bartoli sat in her chair sipping water.Whatever she needed, it briefly worked. Flipkens, after the medical timeout, broke for the first and only time, making it 3-1. But a few minutes later Bartoli broke again and held to make it 5-1.First of all, I'm not going to use it as an excuse, that's for sure. I mean, Marion played an amazing, good match, Flipkens said. But I fell in the first set. Straightaway I didn't feel anything, but I fell on my bad knee. At that moment I didn't feel it, but a couple of games later I started to feel a really sharp pain like I had four weeks ago.Bartoli is now 2-1 in Grand Slam semifinals with both wins at Wimbledon. Six years ago, she beat another Belgian, top-seeded Justine Henin, in the semifinals. But then she ran into Venus Williams, who that year won the fourth of her five Wimbledon titles. On Saturday, Bartoli will be on relatively equal footing against Lisicki. It's a good opportunity. She has experience at least, Mauresmo said of Bartoli. Maybe it's going to help her for the final.
Bryans move to Wimbledon final Posted: LONDON (AP) - Mike and Bob Bryan moved one win away from their fourth straight major title the Bryan Slam with a five-set victory over Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin at Wimbledon on Thursday. The 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory extended the Bryans' winning streak to 23 matches. The Americans have won a record 14 Grand Slam tournaments. If they get the 15th this week, they'll become the first team in the Open era to hold all four major titles at the same time. They had two match points in the fourth set, but couldn't convert. But they broke Bopanna in the first game of the fifth set, when Roger-Vasselin popped up Mike Bryan's low return and Bob Bryan put it away.
Tyson Gay times 9.79 to win 100 at Athletissima Posted: LAUSANNE (AP) - Tyson Gay ran the second fastest 100-meter time this year on Thursday, clocking 9.79 seconds to win at the Athletissima Diamond League meet.Only Gay's world-leading 9.75 to take the U.S. Nationals title has been faster in this world championships season, just five weeks before the main event in Moscow.Usain Bolt, the Olympic champion and world record holder, has a season's best so far of 9.94 set at the Jamaican nationals last month. The 30-year-old Gay reacted fast to the starting gun yet only pulled away from former world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica in the final 40 meters.Powell clocked his season's best time of 9.88 bettered only by Gay in 2013 to finish second, while American Michael Rodgers was third in 9.96.Veteran Kim Collins, the 2003 world champion from St. Kitts and Nevis, set a personal best aged 37 of 9.97 to place fourth. The standout performance was produced by high jumper Bohdan Bondarenko who threatened the 20-year-old world record set by Javier Sotomayor of Cuba.Bondarenko cleared a world season-leading height of 2.41 meters five centimeters better than his previous best set last Sunday at Birmingham, England before taking aim at Sotomayor's hallowed 2.45 mark.I can't explain that progression. It's simply fantastic for me, the 23-year-old Ukrainian said. With the bar set at 2.46, Bondarenko only just failed at his first of three unsuccessful attempts.American Erik Kynard, the Olympic silver medalist, also cleared a personal best, at 2.37, to place second. Two more athletes set world-leading marks on a cool and breezy evening.David Oliver timed 13.03 in the 110 hurdles, leading an American sweep of the first four places. World champion Jason Richardson ran his season-best of 13.20 to place second.Olympic discus champion Sandra Perkovic extended her own 2013 mark with a throw of 68.96 meters, 48 centimeters beyond her best at the New York Diamond League meet in May.A surprise winner in the women's 200 was Mariya Ryemyen of Ukraine, surging late past a strong American entry in a time of 22.61 seconds.New U.S. champion Kimberlyn Duncan was third, timing 22.73 on her debut run in an individual race in Europe.
Drivers threaten to withdraw if more blowouts Posted: NUERBURGRING (AP) - Formula One drivers will withdraw from the German Grand Prix if there are more tire blowouts during Sunday's race.Last weekend, a number of blowouts overshadowed the British GP, causing tire supplier Pirelli to introduce a new plan to stop the same thing from happening again. But the Grand Prix Drivers' Association said Thursday in a statement that the drivers would pull out if the problem persists. We are ready to drive our cars to the limit, as we always do, and as it is expected by our teams, sponsors and fans, the GPDA said. However, the drivers have decided if similar problems should manifest themselves during the German GP, we shall immediately withdraw from the event, as this avoidable problem with the tires endangers again the lives of drivers, marshals and fans. This weekend, the belt on the rear tires will be made of Kevlar instead of steel in an effort to reduce the chance of punctures. From the Hungarian Grand Prix, the tires will change again, using the 2012 construction with 2013 compounds. In the paddock at the Nuerburgring, some drivers praised Pirelli for acting quickly to rectify the problem. But the GPDA, chaired by Pedro de la Rosa and with Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button as directors, met later and decided to take their own action in order to avoid a repeat of the scenes from Silverstone.
Andre Greipel wins 6th stage of Tour Posted: MONTPELLIER (AP) - German rider Andre Greipel won Thursday's sixth stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish and Daryl Impey became the first South African to wear the race leader's yellow jersey after taking it from teammate Simon Gerrans. In temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Centigrade (86 Fahrenheit), Greipel surged ahead some 500 meters from the line and held off a strong challenge from Peter Sagan and Marcel Kittel. It was a very nervous stage today, Greipel said. We knew we could take it in the sprint and we were ready for that. The 30-year-old Greipel dedicated his fifth career Tour stage win to his Lotto-Belisol teammate Jurgen Van den Broeck, who pulled out before the start after failing to recover from a knee injury sustained in a crash on Wednesday.Of course, sometimes happiness and sadness can be so close together. I have to say (manager) Marc Sargeant did a great job this morning at the bus and tried to get this out of our heads, Greipel said. It shows the character we have in this team.Mark Cavendish was caught in a crash close to the end of the stage and wasted a lot of energy pedaling hard to rejoin the main pack. He finished fourth, the day after winning his 24th career Tour stage to close the gap on archrival Sagan in the contest for the sprinter's green jersey.Greipel's win moved him above Cavendish and into second place, 29 points behind Sagan. Third-place Cavendish is 40 points behind Sagan. Another win for Cavendish would have tied him with Andre Leducq for third on the all-time list of stage winners at the 110-year-old race.Praising his team's efforts, Greipel said: Today they made it like textbook and we are really happy.Perhaps feeling the effects of his spill, Cavendish lacked his usual powers of acceleration and couldn't generate enough speed when he pulled out to the left and tried unsuccessfully to get around the three in front.Impey took over the leader's jersey from his Orica Greenedge teammate. It's a historic day for South Africa, the first to wear a yellow jersey, the 28-year-old Impey said. It will definitely change my life. Hopefully people will start recognizing me, maybe.Gerrans revealed that he had eased up to let Impey overtake him in the overall standings. That was a reward for Impey helping Gerrans to win Monday's third stage and his role in helping Orica Greenedge to take the team time trial the following day.Daryl was a huge part of me getting the jersey so I thought it was a nice gesture to be able to pass it on to him now, Gerrans said. He was an integral part of the team's time trial. I thought it was only fitting that he could spend a day or two in the jersey as well. The pack stayed together until the end of a 176.5-kilometer (110-mile) route from Aix-en-Provence to Montpellier that was totally flat, except for one small category 4 climb. But that did not prevent more crashes on this year's race. With about 20 miles left, Cavendish was caught in a tangle at the back of the peloton involving members of the Belkin team. His white Omega Pharma-QuickStep jersey was torn and marked by the fall.Cavendish, who won in Montpellier two years ago, had shaken off illness and a drop in form to earn his 24th career Tour stage win on Wednesday and close the gap on archrival Sagan.Cavendish won the green jersey in 2011 but Sagan succeeded him last year, largely because Cavendish was working more to help Sky teammate Bradley Wiggins become the first British rider to win the Tour, rather than defending his own jersey.

Oil prices fall after Egypt-fuelled hikes Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Oil prices fell on Thursday following recent rallies over Middle East supply worries after Egypt's army overthrew and detained President Mohamed Morsi.Investors were closely watching to see whether the unrest would escalate and affect stability in the oil-rich and politically volatile Middle East region which neighbours north African nation Egypt.Analysts said oil prices were weighed down also by a stronger dollar, which Thursday rallied against the euro and British pound after the European Central Bank and Bank of England indicated that their main interest rates would likely remain at record-low levels for some time. Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August dropped 42 cents to stand at $105.34 a barrel in late London deals.New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light sweet crude for August, fell 14 cents to $101.10 a barrel. On Wednesday, the contract had hit a 14-month high point at $102.18.The risks of prolonged unrest in Egypt have diminished slightly after the ousting of President Morsi, said Fawad Razaqzada, analyst at traders GFT Markets.Crude oil has therefore eased off slightly following strong gains in recent days. However, risks of further unrest remain elevated, so prices are unlikely to fall back as quickly as they rose. The Egyptian army on Wednesday toppled Islamist president Morsi after a week of unrest that killed nearly 50 people as millions took to the streets to demand an end to his turbulent year of rule. While not a major crude exporter, Egypt is home to key oil choke points such as the Suez Canal and the Sumed Pipeline.
South Africa rest Steyn for Sri Lanka tour Posted: JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Star South African fast bowler Dale Steyn was excluded from two national squads Thursday for an 18-day tour of Sri Lanka. The Proteas play five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches between July 20 and August 6 in capital city Colombo, Kandy and Hambantota. We are resting Steyn as we have a very important and crowded Test season ahead, Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson told reporters in Johannesburg. We want to be absolutely certain that Dale, as the leader of our attack, is properly rested and fit.Graeme Smith could not be considered because of his long-term recovery process following surgery. Steyn helped South Africa reach the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals in England last month, while a recurring ankle injury sidelined star batsman Smith. The tour marks the debut of new Proteas coach Russell Domingo and he will be in charge of 16-strong ODI and T20 squads with 12 cricketers included in both. Hashim Amla, Colin Ingram, Alviro Petersen and Robin Peterson play only in the five-ODI series spread over 12 days at three venues.Henry Davids, recalled Imran Tahir, Wayne Parnell and uncapped David Wiese were picked exclusively for three T20 games over five days.David impressed when the national emerging squad toured Namibia, having previously done well in the Champions League tournament, said Hudson. We feel he is the sort of player who could make an explosive impact in the T20 squad.Adrian Birrell has been named assistant coach to Domingo and Claude Henderson specialist spin bowling coach, and Allan Donald has been retained as specialist bowling coach.Domingo was promoted after assisting former India World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten, who did not renew his two-year contract.ODI squad: AB de Villiers (capt), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy, Colin Ingram, Rory Kleinveldt, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.T20 squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Farhaan Behardien, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Rory Kleinveldt, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, David Wiese.
Ashes to 'define' Australia: Martyn Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Damien Martyn said Thursday that the upcoming back-to-back Ashes series against England represent a defining moment for Australia and especially all-rounder Shane Watson.Australia begin their bid to regain the urn from arch-rivals England when the first of five Tests starts at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on Wednesday. The tourists' build-up to the series has been marked by lacklustre on-field performances in the Champions Trophy and several off-field problems, including David Warner's bar-room attack on England's Joe Root, that eventually culminated in coach Mickey Arthur being sacked just 16 days before the Ashes started.Darren Lehmann, South African Arthur's replacement, moved quickly to restore Watson to his favoured position of opening the batting. But the fact is Watson has scored just two hundreds in 41 Tests.Unusually, no sooner have the teams completed their series in England, than they will head to Australia for a return campaign starting in November and former Australia batsman Martyn was in no doubt as to what was at stake for the current team, looking to put the embarrassment of their 4-0 loss in India earlier this year behind them.I think these 10 Test matches are a defining moment for him and for a lot of these players in the side, Martyn told a London news conference on Thursday.Watson has played 40 Test matches and at some point you have to start making your mark, added Martyn, who retired midway through the 2006/07 Ashes having struck 13 hundreds in 67 Tests at an average of 46.37.Australia's batsmen have struggled against the swinging ball in recent Ashes contests -- and next week's first Test at Trent Bridge will see England begin a bid to win three straight series against their arch-rivals for the first time since the 1950s.On current evidence, Australia have just one top-order batsman of proven world-class in captain Michael Clarke, who has been struggling with a longstanding back injury. But former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody, speaking alongside Martyn, recalled how the 1989 squad of which he was a member had been written off ahead of that year's Ashes in England only for a team led by Allan Border and featuring the emerging talent of batting great Steve Waugh to triumph 4-0.Moody said now would be an ideal time for one of Australia's unheralded batsmen to stamp their authority on an Ashes, just as Waugh did 24 years ago in scoring 506 runs, in a six-match series, at an exceptional average of 126.50.There are similarities, Moody said. I remember the press conference when we first arrived. A member of the media said to Border: 'What is it like to captain the worst Australian side ever to hit English shores?'So that took us a a bit by surprise -- not that we thought we were world-beaters but we thought we were OK.The result was 4-0 and it should have been 5-0 if Edgbaston wasn't washed out. So I think a lot can be learnt from series like that -- the unknown can happen in an Ashes series.Players, particularly Australia's batsmen, are going into this series not expecting to score runs. Clarke is, possibly Watson -- although he has a lot to prove in Test cricket -- maybe this series is the series he stamps himself as a serious Test batsman. And it may also be another player -- whether that's a (Phil) Hughes, an (Usman) Khawaja or a (Steven) Smith or a Warner, whoever it is may do what Steve Waugh did in 1989.No one expected in '89 that Steve Waugh would dominate and influence the series like he did.I think there is no doubt that Australia can draw parallels with '89. I am not talking 4-0 but I think Australia have been written off far too early.
Tour match: Ton-up Clarke puts Aussies on top Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Australia captain Michael Clarke scored his first century of the tour to leave the visitors well-placed at stumps on the third day of four against Worcestershire in their final Ashes warm-up match at New Road on Thursday.Clarke, who had been suffering from a recurrence of his longstanding back injury during the early stages of the tour, got in touch for next week's first Test against England at Trent Bridge by making 124 off just 98 balls. His innings featured 16 fours and three sixes although a placid pitch and a less than threatening attack certainly worked in the star batsman's favour.Australia set Worcestershire 457 to win, with the hosts 64 for one at stumps -- a deficit of 393 after Nick Compton, who on Wednesday revealed his unhappiness at being dropped by England, the man out.Earlier, Australia declared for the second time in the match after piling up 344 for five, with Phil Hughes making 86.Previously, the tourists knocked over the final three Worcestershire first innings wickets for 38 runs. When Australia batted a second time, Ed Cowan, still not certain of a Test place, was lbw to Jack Shantry for 34.Clarke then took over, striking his third ball for four and making Worcestershire pay for Alexei Kervezee dropping him on 32 before he was eventually caught at third man off Shantry.
