Toll in Egypt violence mounts to 30 nationwide Posted: CAIRO (AP) - Enraged Islamists pushed back Friday against the toppling of President Mohammed Morsi, as tens of thousands of his supporters took to the streets vowing to win his reinstatement and clashed with their opponent in violence that killed 30 and wounded more than 200 nationwide. In a battle on a bridge over the Nile River in Cairo, gunfire rang out and flames leaped from a burning car as the rival camps threw volleys of stones and fireworks at each other. Military armored vehicles raced across the bridge in a counterattack on Morsis supporters. The clashes accelerated after four supporters of the president were killed when troops opened fire on their rally and after a dramatic appearance by the supreme leader of Morsis Muslim Brotherhood. He defiantly proclaimed that his followers would not give up street action until the return of the president, swept out of power days earlier by the military.God make Morsi victorious and bring him back to the palace, Mohammed Badie proclaimed before cheering supporters at a Cairo mosque in his first appearance since the overthrow. We are his soldiers we defend him with our lives.Badie said it was a matter of honor for the military to abide by its pledge of loyalty to the president, in what appeared to be an attempt to pull it away from its leadership.Your leader is Morsi. ... Return to the people of Egypt, he said. Your bullets are not to be fired on your sons and your own people.Hours later, Badies deputy, Khairat el-Shater, considered the most powerful figure in the organization, was arrested in a Cairo apartment along with his brother on allegations of inciting violence, Interior Ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif told The Associated Press. After the speech, a large crowd of Islamists surged across 6th October Bridge over the Nile toward Tahrir Square, where a giant crowd of Morsis opponents had been massed all day. Battles broke out there and near the neighboring state TV building. Pro-Morsi youth shielded themselves from flying stones and fireworks with sheets of barricaded metal. A car burned at the top of an exit ramp amid the sounds of automatic weapons and shotguns. They are firing at us, sons of dogs Where is the army? one Morsi opponent shouted as another was brought to medics with his jeans soaked in blood from leg wounds. At least three people were killed at the bridge. The fighting ended when at least seven armored personnel carriers sped across the bridge, chasing away the Morsi supporters. Young civilians jumped onto the roofs of the APCs, shouting insults at the Islamists and chanting, The people and army are one hand.Across the country, clashes erupted as Morsi supporters tried to storm local government buildings or military facilities, battling police or Morsi opponents. At least 30 people were killed throughout the day in Egypt, with 210 wounded, Heath Ministry official Khaled el-Khatib told The Associated Press.Islamists descended on anti-Morsi rally, opening fire with guns in the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria, where at least 12 people were killed, mostly Morsi opponents, emergency services official Amr Salama said. One man was stabbed and thrown from the roof of a building by Morsi supporters after he raised an Egyptian flag and shouted insults against the ousted president, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.Five policemen killed by militants in shootings around the Sinai city of el-Arish, according to security officials speaking on condition of anonymity because not authorized to talk to the press. The U.S. State Department condemned the violence and called on all Egyptian leaders to denounce the use of force and prevent further bloodshed among their supporters. The voices of all who are protesting peacefully must be heard including those who welcomed the events of earlier this week and those who supported President Morsi, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement. The Egyptian people must come together to resolve their differences peacefully, without recourse to violence or the use of force.Britains Foreign Secretary William Hague also said he was very concerned by the reports of violence.Col. Ahmed Ali, a spokesman for the armed forces, said the Muslim Brotherhood was trying to pick a fight with the army and drag it to a clash in order to send a message to the West that what happened in the country is a coup and that the military is cracking down on the peaceful protesters. That mirrored a statement from an umbrella group of Morsi opponents including the National Salvation Front and youth groups. The group urged the public to take to the streets immediately to defend popular legitimacy against what they called a malicious plot by the Brotherhood.Islamists vowed to show by their numbers and the turmoil that the military had made a mistake by removing Morsi on Wednesday night. The action followed mass demonstrations for four days this week by the presidents opponents in the biggest rallies the country has seen. The military got itself in a trap by taking one side. Now they see the masses in the streets and now they realized that there are two peoples, Hamada Nassar, a figure from the hard-line former militant group, Gamaa Islamiya, told AP.An interim president senior judge Adly Mansour was sworn in Thursday, and a Cabinet of technocrats is to be formed to run Egypt until new elections can be held, although officials have not said when that will be. Mansour dissolved the interim parliament the upper house of the legislature which was overwhelmingly dominated by Islamists and Morsi allies. He also named the head of General Intelligence, Rafaat Shehata, as his security adviser.
Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood deputy head arrested Posted: CAIRO (AP) - An Interior Ministry spokesman says the deputy head of the Muslim Brotherhood, Khairat el-Shater, considered the most powerful man in the organization has been arrested.Spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif says el-Shater and his brother were arrested late Friday from an apartment in eastern Cairo on allegations of inciting violence against protesters in recent days.El-Shater, a wealthy businessman, is the deputy of the Brotherhoods supreme leader, but has long been considered the groups most powerful decision-maker. He was the groups original candidate for the presidency but was disqualified for a past prison sentence. Mohammed Morsi ran in his place and became Egypts first freely elected president.Morsi was swept out of office this week by the military as millions held protests demanding his removal.
Bombings targeting Shiites kill 19 in Iraq Posted: BAGHDAD (AP) - A suicide attacker and a car bombing killed at least 19 people and wounded 38 in separate attacks Friday targeting Shiites north of Baghdad. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, the latest in an increasing wave of violence across the country.Iraq has been facing its deadliest outburst of violence since 2008, with more than 2,000 people killed since the start of April. The bloodshed appears to be largely the work of resurgent Sunni militants such as al-Qaidas Iraq branch, feeding off Sunni discontent with the Shiite-led government. The deadliest attack on Friday took place in Baghdads Kiraiyat neighborhood as worshippers gathered after the evening call to prayers at the Hussienieh Ali Basha mosque. A suicide bomber walked in during the service and detonated his explosives, killing 15 worshippers and wounding 32, a police officer and a medical official said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the media.Earlier Friday, an explosives-laden vehicle detonated near a Shiite protest camp in the city of Samarra, a police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to release information to the media. The head of the Salahuddin provincial health directorate, Raed Ibrahim, later confirmed the casualty figures in the attack in Samarra, 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad.Since December, Iraqs Sunni minority has been staging demonstrations over what it calls second-class treatment by the Shiite-led government. In some place clashes have erupted between security forces and protesters.Violence increased sharply in April and May, with frequent bombings in civilian areas raising concerns that a widespread sectarian conflict could once again break out in Iraq. The bloodshed accelerated after a deadly April 23 crackdown by security forces on a Sunni anti-government protest in the northern town of Hawija in which 23 people were killed.Hoping to stem the violence with a sign of solidarity, both Sunni and Shiite worshippers gathered Friday at Abdul-Qadir al-Gailani Mosque in downtown Baghdad to kneel and pray side by side. As they prayed, the mosque remained under tight security.

Djokovic, Murray to meet in Wimbledon final Posted: LONDON (Agencies) - Andy Murray will take on Novak Djokovic in a bid to become the first Brit to win Wimbledon since 1936.Murray beat 24th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to make the final for a second consecutive year. After dropping the first set, Murray trailed 4-1 in the third against the big-serving Janowicz before taking five games in a row. When the third set ended, after 8:30 pm, Murray complained about the decision to shut the retractable roof because of approaching darkness.Action resumed after a half-hour delay, and Murray quickly broke for a 2-1 lead in the fourth.A year ago, Murray was the runner-up to Roger Federer. The second-seeded Murray faces world No. 1 Djokovic in Sundays final.Djokovic slugged out 4 hours, 43 minutes of withering, backbreaking tennis to take a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (8), 6-3 victory over Juan Martin del Potro to move one victory away from his seventh major title. One of the best matches Ive been a part of, Djokovic said. One of the most exciting definitely. It was so close. You couldnt separate us. Exciting. It was the longest semifinal in Wimbledon history and was only five minutes short of the 2008 five-set final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal thats also considered one of the greatest matches ever played on Centre Court. That one began late nearly 6:15 p.m., after Djokovic and del Potro spent the entire afternoon exchanging huge groundstrokes, long rallies and even a few laughs during their marathon match, which covered five sets, 55 games, two tiebreakers and 368 points. I think this match is going to be memory for a few years, del Potro said. We play for four hours and a half on a very high level. We didnt make too many errors. I dont know if the rest of the players can play like us today.Del Potro, back in a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since winning the 2009 US Open, saved two match points in the fourth-set tiebreaker, then won the final four points to take it 8-6.Shortly after, the match hit the 4-hour mark, guaranteeing it would surpass the 1989 match between Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl a 4:01 affair as the longest semifinal in Wimbledons long history.Such a high level, from the first to the last point, said Djokovic, who finished with 80 winners and 22 aces. I think Ive never played in Wimbledon against such a player. Im privileged to be the winner of this match.Del Potro came into the match with a left knee wrapped heavily in athletic tape, a victim of two nasty slips that sent him tumbling earlier in the tournament. The second fall came two days previously, on the fifth point in the quarterfinal win over David Ferrer. Del Potro said the trainer gave him a couple of magic pills anti-inflammatories and that kept him going in that match. On Friday against Djokovic, del Potro showed very few signs of an aftereffect.Tested throughout the match by a variety of Djokovic drop shots, del Potro got to most. More than once, the Argentine chased the ball from wide of the court on the forehand side to wide of the court on the backhand side. After going wide in the third set to hit one of his 48 winners, del Potro stood on the ledge separating the court from the stands, waiting for a high-5 from one of the fans at courtside. The fans soaked in the del Potro experience, cheering on the underdog as he pushed the worlds best player to the very limit. They help me a lot for fight, to keep trying, keep going, del Potro said. Of course Im sad now, but in a couple of days, I will see how big the match was.He may also relive some moments hed like to have back. Del Potro had three break points in the third set and couldnt convert any, screaming in frustration when he framed a backhand wide on the third try. Then, trailing 3-2 in the third-set tiebreaker, del Potro failed to put an overhead away and Djokovic slipped and fell on the dirt behind the baseline while throwing up a weak lob. Backpedaling, del Potro couldnt handle the overhead and dropped it in the net.He lost the rest of the points to fall behind by a set.A bit later, Del Potro lost his serve to fall behind 4-3 in the fourth set, but broke right back, finishing the game with a big backhand winner, a guttural grunt and a fist pump. They held serve until the tiebreaker, and when del Potro won that one, he looked like the del Potro of 2009, the man who broke the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic stranglehold on the majors by overcoming a 2-1 deficit against Federer in the 2009 US Open final to win the title.I think Im in good form, del Potro said.Against almost anyone else, his court coverage, his sledgehammer forehand and even his conditioning on a near-windless day, would have placed him in the final.Against Djokovic, the best counterpuncher and arguably the best conditioned player in the game, it wasnt quite enough. An example of Djokovics ability to turn defence into offense came on set point in the third set, when del Potro pounced big-time on Djokovics serve, pushing it deep to the Serbs backhand side. Djokovic moved over and calmly blocked it back for a down-the-line winner. Del Potro brought the neck of his shirt up to cover his face and headed dejectedly to the sideline. You can see I played my best tennis ever on grass court, but was not enough to beat the No. 1 in the world, del Potro said. I was so close.
United won't sell Rooney; striker silent on future Posted: MANCHESTER (AP) - After categorically stating that Wayne Rooney is not for sale, new Manchester United manager David Moyes was less forthcoming Friday about what the striker plans to do ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.Rooneys future has been mired in uncertainty since he told Alex Ferguson that he wanted a transfer before the managers surprise retirement in May.The 27-year-old Rooney had grown frustrated at being dropped and substituted in key matches as Robin van Persie emerged as Uniteds leading striker on the charge to a record-extending 20th English title. But with two years remaining on Rooneys contract, United doesnt appear willing to allow the Moyes era to begin with a leading player joining a rival club.Wayne is not for sale, Moyes said at his first news conference since replacing Ferguson. Hes a Manchester United player and he will remain a Manchester United player. When asked if Rooney had told him categorically that he no longer wanted to leave, Moyes responded evasively: I can tell you categorically Wayne Rooney is training fantastically well in the last two days, thats all I can categorically tell you.Rooney is yet to publicly discuss his push to leave United, which was first revealed by Ferguson, opting not to address the issue among his many tweets over the summer or when interviewed during Uniteds Premier League trophy parade in May.Moyes was Everton manager when Rooney was reluctantly sold to Fergusons United in 2004.
Posted: ALBI (AP) - Slovakian rider Peter Sagan won the hilly seventh stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish on Friday, and Daryl Impey kept the overall race lead.Sagan held off a challenge from John Degenkolb of Germany to win his first Tour stage and extend his lead in the contest for the sprinters green jersey.Impey began the day as the only South African rider to wear the yellow jersey, but he will likely relinquish it after Saturdays first of two difficult days of climbing in the high mountains of the Pyrenees.Veteran American rider Christian Vande Velde pulled out after being caught up in an early crash one of several that have marred a nervy start to the 100th edition of the showcase race.
Vettel ahead of Rosberg in 2nd German GP practice Posted: NUERBURGRING (AP) - Sebastian Vettel edged German rival Nico Rosberg for the fastest lap in practice for the German Grand Prix on Friday, while the Formula One chief played down the drivers threat of a pullout over tire safety concerns.F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said a boycott would help nobody and drivers who refused to race on Sunday risked losing their licenses.Three-time champion Vettel is seeking his first win on home soil and beat Rosberg by .235 seconds in the second practice, after finishing eighth in the slower morning session.Vettels fastest lap was 1 minute, 30.416 seconds. Mark Webber in the second Red Bull was third and Romain Grosjean was fourth, ahead of Lotus teammate Kimi Raikkonen.Next came Ferraris Fernando Alonso, who failed to complete a full lap in the morning because of electrical problems.Lewis Hamilton, who topped the morning session ahead of Mercedes teammate Rosberg, was eighth in the afternoon.Ecclestone, who came to Germany despite facing possible bribery charges in a Munich case, said the drivers were right in stating that it was their neck on the line. But he told the German newspaper Die Welt the drivers understood that Pirelli would do everything to resolve the tire issue, which turned serious when five cars endured blowouts at the British GP last week. There is a big difference between thinking about something and carrying it out. If the drivers boycott the race, they risk losing their super licenses, Eccelstone said. Such a boycott would serve no one and wont solve the problem faster. There were no punctures in the practices, although some drivers complained about the quick degradation of soft tires.Drivers threatened through the Grand Prix Drivers Association to withdraw from Sundays race if tire problems persist, while Pirelli has asked teams to stick to operating requirements.Pirelli wants all teams to remain within the prescribed pressure limits and to stop switching tires from left to right and vice versa. The International Automobile Federation said on Friday it was the responsibility of each team to comply with the requirements. This weekend, the belt on the rear tires is made of Kevlar instead of steel in an effort to reduce the chance of punctures. From the Hungarian GP at the end of this month, the tires will change again, using the 2012 construction with 2013 compounds. In the paddock at the Nuerburgring, some drivers praised Pirelli for acting quickly to rectify the problem. But the GPDA, chaired by Pedro de la Rosa and with Vettel and Jenson Button as directors, met later and decided to take their own action in order to avoid a repeat of the scenes from Silverstone. Not all divers are members of the GPDA Raikkonnen and Adrian Sutil of Force India are among non-members.

Oil price climbs after strong US jobs report Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil marched higher Friday with a positive report on U.S. hiring and ongoing concerns about the crisis in Egypt.U.S. benchmark crude for August delivery rose $1.98, or 2 percent, to finish at $103.22 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That's the highest closing price since May 2, 2012.Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, rose $2.18, or 2.1 percent, to end at $107.72 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.Following the ouster of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday, his supporters began a series of protests and attacks Friday. The military opened fire as hundreds of protesters marched on a headquarters of the Republican GuardEgypt is not an oil producer, but its control of the Suez Canal, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, gives it a crucial role in maintaining global energy supplies. For now supplies are moving freely through the canal.U.S. employers added a robust 195,000 jobs in June and many more in April and May than previously thought. The job growth suggests a stronger economy and makes it more likely the Federal Reserve will slow its bond purchases before year's end. Those bond purchases have supported the economy by helping keep long-term interest rates low. That in turn has given a boost to investments such as stocks and oil.
Solar plane poised for last flight of US journey Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - For Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard, flying an experimental solar aircraft across America has been exhilarating, but perilous at times. His wispy, fuel-free aircraft, the Solar Impulse, is poised to take off Saturday on its final leg of a cross-country US tour aimed at showcasing the promise of clean energy. The single-seat plane will have Piccard's business partner Andre Borschberg at the controls when it leaves the US capital, Washington, around 4:45 am (0845 GMT) Saturday, with arrival in New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport expected Sunday, July 7, around 2 am (0600 GMT). Piccard told AFP one of his favorite memories was piloting the aircraft as it glided over San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge at the start of the multi-stop tour in April. But another night, when it was Borschberg's turn to fly, he encountered high winds that threatened to send the fragile plane -- with a wingspan of a jumbo jet but the weight of a small car -- way off course. He had to position the plane parallel to the runway, heading into the wind, and drifted sideways to the runway, recalled Piccard, who said he stays awake for the 20-hour and longer flights when his business partner is in the air.He could not do the normal pattern or he would have been kicked aside 10 or 20 miles, he said. The speed of the wind was equal to the speed of the airplane. That was quite an exciting moment for everyone, he said with a laugh. It was a little bit stressful. The Solar Impulse HB-SIA is powered by 12,000 solar cells and flies under cover of darkness by reaching high altitudes during the day and gliding downward over long distances by night. It uses no fossil fuels.Drawbacks include the tiny cockpit, vulnerability to turbulence and the lack of a toilet, so the pilots must relieve themselves by using an empty plastic water bottle on solo flights that routinely last 20-24 hours. I never find it too long, said Piccard. When you are in the most revolutionary airplane, and you know that so many people are following your flight, so many people support your message about clean energy, it is just awesome to be in that plane.Piccard said the US trip was more difficult than expected because of the weather -- there were lots of tornadoes, thunderstorms, so several of our flights were delayed or postponed but nevertheless it was a big success.Crowds of people came to see the plane at each of its four stopoffs so far, and Piccard said he was impressed by the positive reactions. We can really observe that America is a country of innovation and pioneering, he told AFP. People were not only saying congratulations, they were saying thank you for what you do. It was very touching. The plane's American trip is just the latest in a series of groundbreaking flights across different parts of the world, including Europe and Africa. The HB-SIA is soon to be phased out as the Swiss team prepares to make test flights of the second-generation aircraft, the HB-SIB next year. Piccard said the next plane will be 10 percent bigger, with more power, reliability, an auto-pilot function and a toilet so that pilots can make the four to six day long trips that will be part of its journey across the world in 2015.Our goal is not just to fly across America and make a historic milestone, said Piccard. It needs to be useful for society, to show people worldwide how much more efficient the world can be with clean technology.
India beat West Indies at Celkon Mobile Cup Posted: PORT-OF-SPAIN (AP) - India captain Virat Kohli stroked 102 off 83 balls Friday to lead India to victory over West Indies in a rain-affected fourth one-day cricket international of the Celkon Mobile Cup at Queen's Park Oval. The 24-year-old batsman, leading in the absence of the injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni, smashed 13 fours and two sixes for his 14th one-day ton that helped guide the visitors to 311-7 off 50 overs.Openers Shikhar Dhawan, with 69 off 76 deliveries, and Rohit Sharma, who contributed 46 off 78 balls, set the early platform in an opening stand of 123.West Indies' reply never got the necessary momentum and the team was bowled out for 171 off 34 overs to lose by 102 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method.Seamers Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-29), Umesh Yadav (3-32) and Ishant Sharma (2-30) led the way for India. The hosts had been stuttering at 56-2 off 10 overs when a rain shower caused a delay of an hour and a half and resulted in a reduced target of 274 off 39 overs. The victory was set up by India's huge total after they were sent in front of a crowd of close to 15,000.Dhawan was the more enterprising opener at the start, playing some authentic strokes through the off side as India built a base to reach 39 off the first 10 overs.Sharma grew in confidence and the pair began to flourish once the shine went off the two new balls.Their stand reached 123 in 23 overs before the hosts struck back with a clatter of wickets mid-innings.Kemar Roach made a crucial breakthrough in the first over of his second spell, as Dhawan holed out to deep midwicket. The left-hander hit eight fours and two sixes.Sharma followed soon afterwards edging to Denesh Ramdin behind the stumps from Tino Best's first ball of his new spell at 141-2.When Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik went cheaply, to Marlon Samuels and Best respectively, India was stuggling at 168-4 in the 36th over.Raina edged a big turning off-break to slip while Karthi gloved a hook to Ramdin.Murali Vijay dominated a stand of 42 off 28 balls with his skipper to revive the innings. The right-hander slammed 27 off 18 balls with five fours. But when he departed to Kieron Pollard and Ravindra Jadeja was run out, the innings was at the crossroads at 222-6 with eight overs remaining.Kohli, who got to fifty off 55 balls, ensured a grandstand finish as he raced to his 14th one-day ton in the final over, off 81 balls. He found an able ally in Ravichandran Ashwin, who hit an unbeaten 25 of 18 balls with three fours.Bhuvneshwar Kumar undermined the West Indies chase with the scalps of Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo inside the first five overs. Both batsmen fell to edges, Gayle caught by the wicketkeeper and Bravo gobbled up by Ashwin at slip at 25-2.Johnson Charles and Marlon Samuels consolidated either side of the rain break, but the innings collapsed when Ishant Sharma removed Samuels to another wicketkeeper's catch and Kieron Pollard fell cheaply to Kumar. When Charles, who hit six fours and two sixes to top-score with 45 off 39 balls, was caught off Ishant, India was well on top at 69-5.Umesh Yadav kept the visitors' grip with the wickets of Denesh Ramdin, captain Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy. There was brief resistance from tailenders Kemar Roach, who scored a career-best 34, and Sunil Narine, who scored 21. The pair added 58 from 56 balls for the ninth wicket. But left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets in two balls to finish off the match and ensure India got a bonus point and kept alive their chances of qualifying for Thursday's final.
