ElBaradei named PM to lead Egypt out of bloody crisis

Posted:

CAIRO (AFP) - Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei was chosen Saturday as premier to help lead Egypt out of a deepening crisis, sources said, after bloodshed followed the ouster of the countrys first freely elected president. The Tamarod movement, which engineered mass protests culminating in the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday, made the announcement after talks with Egypts new interim leader. The news of the appointment, which a military source confirmed to AFP, was greeted with cheers outside Cairos Ittihadiya presidential palace, where opponents of Morsi frantically waved Egyptian flags and honked car horns. It came as the Muslim Brotherhood staged a new show of force to demand that the military restore Morsi, after dozens of people died and hundreds more were injured in 24 hours of violence. The official MENA news agency said ElBaradei was in talks with caretaker president Adly Mansour.Tamarod, which has called for demonstrations on Sunday to counter the Islamists, had nominated ElBaradei to represent the grassroots movement in transitional negotiations with the military.ElBaradei, now 71, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for his work as the head of the UNs International Atomic Energy Agency. He returned to Egypt in 2010 and became a prominent opponent of veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak in the lead-up to the 2011 uprising that overthrew him.Aya Hosni, a member of Tamarods central committee, told AFP that the interim president and Tamarod had agreed on Mohamed ElBaradeis nomination as prime minister. She said former interior minister Ahmed Gamal El-Din would be in charge of security affairs and economist Ahmed al-Naggar would be the new finance minister.ElBaradeis appointment came as an Islamist protest to demand the reinstatement of Morsi petered out at nightfall, following 24 hours of ferocious violence that killed 37 people and injured more than 1,400.Tears flowed freely as thousands of supporters of Morsis Muslim Brotherhood mourned four members of the movement killed during protests the Islamist movement called to reject the military coup. The imam told mourners gathered outside Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque in the Cairo neighbourhood of Nasr City, where the Islamists have camped for the past 10 days, to pray for the martyrs of legitimacy.Wearing green headbands, Islamists in their thousands, including many fully veiled women, waved Egyptian flags and pictures of the deposed president.

Turkish police fire tear gas at Istanbul protesters

Posted:

ISTANBUL, July 06, 2013 (AFP) - Turkish riot police fired tear gas and water cannon Saturday to disperse some 3,000 demonstrators who tried to enter flashpoint protest spot Taksim Square in Istanbul. The group had gathered on the Istiklal Avenue pedestrian way that leads to the square, the site of nearly three weeks of protests against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamic-rooted government that left four people dead and some 8,000 injured.Several people were arrested.Protesters said they wanted to reclaim nearby Gezi Park, the birthplace of the unrest, which authorities announced earlier Saturday would reopen to the public after it was shut in mid-June.Authorities warned however that no further protests there would be tolerated. We intend to reopen Gezi Park on Sunday or Monday at the latest so that it is available for people to use, said Istanbul governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu. But, he continued, parks are not places for protests. They must serve as a place of calm and tranquility for all people.A brutal police crackdown on May 31 against a peaceful sit-in to save 600 trees in the park sparked Junes nationwide protests against Erdogan.Protesters occupied the small park day and night before being evicted by police on June 15.Since then, the park has been closed. But in the face of public anger, authorities planted additional trees and a Turkish court annulled a government decision to redevelop the park, saying locals had not been sufficiently consulted about the project.A statement from protest group Taksim Solidarity on Saturday said: We are returning to our park to deliver the message to those who stopped us from accessing it that the courts have dropped a redevelopment project designed to rob the park of its identity, of its users and to turn it into concrete.Residents feared the redevelopment plan would turn the area into a shopping district, while urban planners and ecologists said the proposals did not respect the environment.

Pieces of the tail were strewn about the runway. Emergency responders could be seen walking inside the burned-out wreckage. It wasnt immediately clear what happened to the plane as it was landing, but some eyewitnesses said the aircraft seemed to lose control and that the tail may have hit the ground.

Mexico volcano spits 2 mile-high ash cloud

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AP) - The Popocatepetl volcano just east of Mexico City has spit out a cloud of ash and vapor 2 miles (3 kilometers) high over several days of eruptions, and Mexico City residents awoke Saturday to find a fine layer of volcanic dust on their cars.It has been years since the center of the nations capital has seen a noticeable ash fall because prevailing winds usually blow the volcanic dust in other directions. Ash fell earlier this week in some neighborhoods on Mexico Citys south and east sides. The citys legion of car washers quickly wiped the fine coating from cars on Saturday with no apparent ill effects.Claudia Dominguez, spokeswoman for the Mexico City civil defense office, said the very fine ash had probably been floating around the city from eruptions in previous days and had been brought to Earth by a rainfall late Friday. She said no new ash fall had been reported Saturday, despite continuous eruptions of vapor and ash into the air from the 15,000-foot (5,450 meter) volcano.Mexicos National Center for Disaster Prevention raised the volcano alert from Stage 2 Yellow to Stage 3 Yellow, the final step before a Red alert, when possible evacuations could be ordered. A Stage 3 Yellow alert had been effect during eruptions earlier this year until early June, when it was lowered.Mexicos National Center for Disaster Prevention reported there had been three explosive eruptions at the peak late Friday and early Saturday events that usually toss glowing-hot rock on the volcanos flanks. It said that Popocatepetl has also continuously spewed clouds of ash into the air, most of which was headed northwest, toward Mexico City.U.S. airlines canceled at least one flight at Mexico Citys airport on Friday as a precautionary measure, though airport authorities said the terminal was fully able to operate. Alaska Airlines had cancelled its route to Los Angeles, the airport press office said in its Twitter account. On Friday, four airlines cancelled a total of 17 flights due to climate conditions and in accordance with their own internal policies, the airport said in a statement. The volcano is about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from the airport, which is in turn a few miles east of the citys center. The Environment Ministry has urged residents to take preventive measures to deal with the ash, including wearing dust masks, covering water supplies and staying indoors as needed.Mexico City authorities recommend that people sweep up any ash and put it plastic bags to keep it from mixing with water and forming a concrete-like substance that can block drains.

Froome wins Stage 8 of Tour de France

Posted:

AX 3 DOMAINES (AP) - Chris Froome used the first tough mountain stage to take command of the Tour de France on Saturday, leaving two-time champion Alberto Contador and other challengers in his wake on a grueling climb in the Pyrenees to seize the leaders yellow jersey with a dominant win on the eighth stage.Froome entered the Tour as the favorite after finishing second last year behind countryman and Sky teammate Bradley Wiggins, who isnt defending his title because of an injury. After Froomes performance on Saturday, the race looks like its his to lose.I must be among the happiest men in the world today, Froome said. Theres a long way to go until Paris. There are two weeks left but we want to keep the yellow jersey.Froome leads Contador by nearly two minutes, with former champions Andy Schleck and Cadel Evans much further back, ahead of another tough mountain stage on Sunday.More than anything today weve got a bit of a psychological advantage over the others, Froome said. Its quite hard to think about this, standing in yellow today. This is incredible. In the overall standings, Froome is 51 seconds ahead of teammate Richie Porte and leads third-place Alejandro Valverde by 1:25. Meanwhile, Contador is 1:51 behind in seventh spot; Schleck is 4:00 back in 21st and Evans is 4:36 adrift in 23rd.This is the 100th edition of the Tour and the first since Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven straight titles (1999-2005) for doping. Froomes ride on Saturday resembled Armstrong at his best, when the American used to punish his opponents early in the race to take control.Froome was asked after the stage to vouch that he is riding clean.100 percent, he responded. Its normal that people ask questions in cycling, Froome said. I certainly know the results Im getting, theyre not going to be stripped ... I think the sport (has) changed. If you look at it logically, the sport is in a better place now than it has been. The 28-year-old Froome attacked early into the days second big climb up to Ax 3 Domaines and only Porte, who finished the stage 51 seconds behind in second, was anywhere near him.The team was absolutely perfect today, Porte said. Im absolutely finished but it was an incredible day.Contador grimly held on as long as he could, and was dropped by Froome long after 2010 champion Schleck and 2011 champion Evans had already been left behind.I tried to find my rhythm because it was a bit too fast for me, Schleck said.Froome took the yellow jersey from South African cyclist Daryl Impey, who crawled over the line 7:50 behind in 35th spot. Its very good that Chris has it, we are friends, and weve often trained together, Impey said. I didnt think it was possible to stay with them. I defended it as best I could I had a pretty good climb up the hill. But then you cant do it anymore.Contador finished the stage 1:45 behind Froome, Schleck trailed by 3:34 and the 36-year-old Evans was 4:13 adrift.Given that Froome may attack again in Sundays second tough bout of Pyrenean climbs featuring four straight category 1 ascents he could be well on the way to victory by Mondays rest day.I think were well poised, Froome said. Were going to have to fight for it but Im confident in the team we have.Saturdays 195-kilometer (121-mile) trek started from Castres and stayed flat for a long time before spiking upwards. The Col de Pailheres came first a ferociously tough ascent for about 15 kilometers (9 miles) at a gradient of eight percent and then a shorter but even steeper ride to the finish at the ski resort of Ax 3 Domaines.Colombian rider Nairo Quintana broke away to launch a brutal attack up Pailheres, and only Frenchman Pierre Roland initially followed him, but Porte helped Froome steadily gain ground on them.Schleck, Evans and then Rolland were dropped with about 6 kilometers (4 miles) left to go up to Ax 3 Domaines as Contador desperately tried to stay on Portes wheel. When I looked back and I saw that the other guys were really struggling on the wheel, I just thought this is the right moment to push on, Froome said.Contador was so tired that he struggled to keep up with teammate Roman Kreuziger, and Froome finished him off.I am little bit surprised, Froome said. Maybe he (Contador) didnt have his best day.Froome climbed with such blistering acceleration it almost looked like he was riding a time trial up to the finish line.It may look easy on TV but it wasnt, Froome said.Still, he had time to ease up in the saddle, raise his arms and soak up victory in the blazing sun.

West Indies without Bravo for Sri Lanka match

Posted:

PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) - West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo has been suspended from his teams encounter with Sri Lanka in the fifth match of the Tri-Nation Series at the Queens Park Oval on Sunday. In a decision handed down by the International Cricket Council match referee Jeff Crowe and released on Saturday, it was explained that the all-rounder faces the sanction due to his teams second minor over-rate offence in a 12-month period. The West Indies were determined to be one over short of the required over-rate during the fourth match of the series against India on Friday. It follows on a similar infraction less than a month earlier during the final group match of the Champions Trophy against South Africa at Cardiff on June 14.Bravo pleaded guilty to the offence and as the West Indies team did not contest the charge, there was no need for a formal hearing on the matter.Coming hard on the heels of a 102-run loss to the Indians in that rain-affected fixture, Bravos suspension represents a further setback to a home side that is now in danger of losing momentum completely after they concluded the first half of the league schedule with two wins from two matches at Sabina Park in Jamaica. While they remain at the top of the standings with nine points, another heavy defeat to the Sri Lankans followed by an Indian victory over Angelo Mathews side in the final preliminary match on Tuesday could, depending on the net run-rate calculations, see the West Indies squeezed out of the July 11 final. This will be the second occasion that Bravo has missed action in the brief competition as he was ruled out of the first encounter against the Indians in Kingston with a mild groin strain.Kieron Pollard, who led the hosts to a one-wicket victory in his compatriots absence, is now expected to be at the helm once again with Devon Smith the automatic replacement for Bravo in the batting line-up.Sri Lanka will be brimming with confidence after they annihilated India by 161 runs in the last match played at Sabina Park before the tournament shifted to Trinidad and will be keen to capitalise on a West Indies team that was thoroughly outplayed by Virat Kohlis men on Friday. They are expected to field an unchanged eleven in pursuit of a victory that will pull them level with the Caribbean side at the top of the standings. While the loss of Bravo may not be perceived to be a significant bowling setback, given that he conceded 57 runs off just seven overs as India raced to 311 for seven on Friday, head coach Ottis Gibson is now faced with an additional challenge in sorting out his bowling options, most of whom wilted under the pressure from Kohli and company.

Pietersen set to face Australia in 1st Ashes test

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Star England batsman Kevin Pietersen has been included in the 13-man squad for the first Ashes test against Australia.Returning from a knee injury, Pietersen proved his form and fitness ahead of the series by scoring an undefeated 177 for Surrey last month.Graham Onions is also in the squad and will be vying for the third seamers spot behind Stuart Broad and James Anderson.Broad has recovered from a shoulder injury, which ruled him out of Englands warm-up match against Essex and is fit enough to play in the first test.Opening batsman Nick Compton, however, is left out. His exclusion was expected after England picked Joe Root to open alongside Alastair Cook against Essex, although it would be the first time Root has opened in a test match after previously batting for England at No. 5.Spin bowler Graeme Swann is also selected despite an arm injury against Essex, which is not thought to be serious. We are satisfied with our preparations so far for the first Test, with both Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad recovering well from the injuries they picked up earlier this week, England selector Geoff Miller said. This is an incredibly exciting period of cricket coming up against Australia, and we know we will need to play to our full potential throughout ... if we are to retain the Ashes. If England wins the series, it will be its fourth Ashes victory out of the last five. The first of the five-match series starts Wednesday at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Urine test can diagnose, predict kidney transplant rejection

Posted:

New York (Agencies) - A urine test can now determine whether a transplanted kidney recipient is in the process of rejecting the donated organ, as well as identifying who is at risk of rejection several weeks and even months before symptoms appear.By measuring just three genetic molecules in a urine sample, the test accurately diagnoses acute rejection of kidney transplants, the most frequent and serious complication of kidney transplants, says the studys lead author, Dr. Manikkam Suthanthiran, the Stanton Griffis Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and chief of transplantation medicine, nephrology and hypertension at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. It looks to us that we can actually anticipate rejection of a kidney several weeks before rejection begins to damage the transplant, Dr. Suthanthiran says.It looks to us that we can actually anticipate rejection of a kidney several weeks before rejection begins to damage the transplant, Dr. Suthanthiran says. The test may also help physicians fine-tune the amount of powerful immunosuppressive drugs that organ transplant patients must take for the rest of their lives, Dr. Suthanthiran, whose laboratory developed what he calls the three-gene signature of the health of transplanted kidney organs, said.We have, for the first time, the opportunity to manage transplant patients in a more precise, individualized fashion. This is good news since it moves us from the current one-size-fits-all treatment model to a much more personalized plan, he says, noting that too little immunosuppression leads to organ rejection and too much can lead to infection or even cancer, the researcher said.Such a test is sorely needed to help improve the longevity of kidney transplants and the lives of patients who receive these organs, says study co-author Dr. Darshana Dadhania, associate professor of medicine and medicine in surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and associate attending physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
