Egyptians throng streets in support of army-backed revolt Posted: CAIRO (AFP) - Opponents of Egypt's first freely elected leader packed streets across the country in their hundreds of thousands on Sunday to show the world his ouster was not a military coup but the reflection of the people's will.Staged two days after Islamist rallies exploded into bloodshed, the protests came as a coalition that backed the military action to overthrow president Mohamed Morsi reportedly agreed to name a technocrat as premier.Private television channel ONTV cited a presidential adviser as saying business lawyer Ziad Bahaa Eldin, 48, was set to be offered the post of interim prime minister. If confirmed, caretaker president Adly Mansour has gone for a technocrat without the baggage of his original choice for the job, liberal leader Mohamed ElBaradei, who was now likely to become interim vice president. The development came as protests swelled to an estimated 250,000 in Cairo's Tahrir Square, epicentre of the 2011 revolution.Wave after wave of military aircraft skimmed over the capital, with one formation leaving behind long trails of smoke in black, white and red -- the colours of the Egyptian flag.We are on the street to show the world that it was a popular revolution and not a coup that overthrew Morsi on Wednesday, said a beaming teacher who gave her name as Magda. Many banners showed the protesters' anger with the United States for what they perceive as its support for Morsi, as well as American media coverage depicting his ouster as a coup.America shame on you This is a revolution, not a coup read one, echoing a chant heard in Tahrir, again and again. Others carried portraits of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the general behind Morsi's ouster.President Barack Obama insisted overnight that the United States was not aligned with any political party or group in Egypt following Morsi's ouster. The future path of Egypt can only be determined by the Egyptian people, the White House quoted him as saying. The Tamarod movement, which engineered the June 30 rallies that culminated in Morsi's overthrow, had led calls for people to gather at Tahrir and Ittihadiya presidential palace to complete the revolution. The anti-Morsi crowd filled the iconic square as people poured in from sidestreets, some unfurling a giant national flag emblazoned with the words Go away -- a slogan used widely on June 30.Bursts of gunfire were reportedly heard as people took to the streets of Alexandria on the Mediterranean and other major cities across the Arab world's most populous country.Their Islamist rivals staged their own huge demonstrations in Cairo, where police armed with assault rifles watched over the pro-Morsi demonstrators.Carrying pictures of the deposed president, the Islamists erected barricades across the capital, where tens of thousands of them blocked the main road to the international airport.Morsi's single year of turbulent rule was marked by accusations he failed the 2011 revolution that ousted autocratic president Hosni Mubarak by concentrating power in Islamist hands and letting the economy nosedive. The rallies came after the coalition that backed Morsi's ouster had wavered over the choice of Nobel Prize laureate ElBaradei as interim prime minister to lead the country out of the bloody crisis. In an interview published on Sunday, ElBaradei called for inclusion of the Brotherhood in the democratisation process. No one should be taken to court without a convincing reason. Former president Morsi must be treated with dignity, the former UN nuclear watchdog chief told German news weekly Der Spiegel. The official MENA news agency said on Saturday that interim president Mansour had appointed ElBaradei, only for his office to later deny any final decision had been taken.Salafi Islamists, who backed Morsi's overthrow, were holding out against ElBaradei's appointment, officials close to the talks told AFP.But the 71-year-old was later tapped to become vice president, according to ONTV.Morsi, who has been in custody since overnight on Wednesday, had issued a defiant call for his supporters to defend his legitimacy as Egypt's first freely elected president, in a recorded speech released shortly after his ouster.Violence that killed at least 37 people following Friday's Islamist rallies came despite talk of peaceful protests, with Cairo and second city Alexandria the hardest hit.The bloodletting continued, with gunmen on Saturday killing a Coptic priest in the Sinai and other militants on Sunday shooting dead a police officer in the restive peninsula.Russia's President Vladimir Putin warned the stand-off threatened to degenerate into a civil war.Syria is already in the grips of a civil war, unfortunately enough, and Egypt is moving in that direction, news agencies quoted him as saying.
7.2 earthquake strikes off Papua New Guinea Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake has struck northeast of Papua New Guinea. There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The U.S.G.S. said the quake struck at 4:35 a.m. local time Monday about 68 miles (110 kilometers) east-northeast of the town of Taron on New Ireland island. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 235 miles (379 kilometers) below the earth's surface. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any warning related to the quake.
12 killed as Filipino troops, Muslim rebels clash Posted: MANILA (AP) - More than 100 breakaway Muslim guerrillas launched attacks against army troops in the southern Philippines, sparking clashes that killed five soldiers and at least seven insurgents in an apparent attempt to spoil peace talks between the government and the countrys largest Muslim rebel group, the military said Sunday. The daylong clashes involving the hardline Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters erupted Saturday in the marshy hinterlands of Datu Piang town in Maguindanao province and in villages of nearby North Cotabato province, said regional army spokesman Capt. Anthony Bulao. Army forces were firing artillery rounds against the rebels Sunday in a mountain encampment, he said.Hundreds of villagers fled from Datu Piang, an impoverished rural town about 900 kilometers (560 miles) southeast of Manila, officials said. The Muslim guerrillas involved in the fighting broke off from the largest Muslim rebel group in the country, the 11,000-strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front, two years ago. The rebel faction, led by commander Ameril Umbra Kato, has rejected the talks between the main rebel group and the government, saying they have gone nowhere, and has vowed to continue a rebellion for a separate Muslim homeland in the southern Philippines.Despite the rebel infighting, the peace talks have progressed in recent years and were scheduled to resume Monday in Malaysia to try to iron out differences in a wealth-sharing pact that would be a pillar of an emerging Muslim autonomy deal. There have been reports that they wanted to commit atrocities to sabotage the talks, Bulao said of the breakaway guerrillas. Theyre one of the spoilers of the peace talks.Suspected fighters of the rebel faction detonated a powerful bomb on a roadside as an army truck drove by in Datu Piang, killing an army lieutenant and two soldiers and setting off a gunbattle, military officials said. The attackers later withdrew and were being pursued by reinforcement troops.Another group of rebels, waiting in ambush behind coconut trees on the coast, opened fire on about 30 army troops aboard three approaching motor boats, killing two soldiers and sparking a gunfight in the nearby village of Paidu Pulangi in Pikit town in North Cotabato province. At least seven rebels were killed and seven others were wounded, Bulao said, citing reports from the army troops.
Murray ends Britain's 77-year wait at Wimbledon Posted: LONDON (AP) - Andy Murray needed one more point, one solitary point, to win Wimbledon a title he yearned to earn for himself, of course, and also for his country.Britain had endured 77 years since one of its own claimed the mens trophy at the revered tournament referred to simply as The Championships, and now here was Murray, on the brink of triumph after 3 hours of grueling tennis against top-seeded Novak Djokovic under a vibrant sun at Centre Court.Up 40-love, Murray failed to convert his first match point. And his second. And then his third, too. On and on the contest, and accompanying tension, stretched, Murray unable to close it, Djokovic unwilling to yield, the minutes certainly feeling like hours to those playing and those watching. Along came three break points for Djokovic, all erased. Finally, on Murrays fourth chance to end it, Djokovic dumped a backhand into the net.The final was over. The wait was over.A year after coming oh-so-close by losing in the title match at the All England Club, the No. 2-ranked Murray beat No. 1 Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 Sunday to become Wimbledons champion in a test of will and skill between a pair of men with mirror-image defensive styles that created lengthy points brimming with superb shots. That last game will be the toughest game Ill play in my career. Ever, said Murray, who was born in Dunblane, Scotland, and is the first British man to win the grass-court Grand Slam tournament since Fred Perry in 1936. Winning Wimbledon I still cant believe it. Cant get my head around that. I cant believe it.For several seasons, Murray was the outsider looking in, while Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic collected 29 out of 30 Grand Slam titles. But now Murray has clearly and completely turned the Big 3 into a Big 4, having reached the finals at the last four major tournaments he entered (he withdrew from the French Open in May because of a bad back). And hes now a two-time Slam champion, having defeated Djokovic in five sets at the U.S. Open in September. All this from a guy who lost his first four major finals, including against Federer at Wimbledon in 2012. After that defeat, Murrays voice cracked and tears rolled as he told the crowd, Im getting closer. How prescient. Four weeks later, on the same court, he beat Federer for a gold medal at the London Olympics, a transformative victory if ever there was one. And 52 weeks later, on the same court, he beat Djokovic for the Wimbledon championship. You need that self-belief in the important moments, observed Djokovic, a six-time major champion from Serbia, and hes got it now.Murrays mother, Judy, who is Britains Fed Cup captain, agreed that the setback 12 months ago was a turning point in some ways.Every time you have a really tough loss, a loss that really hurts you, she said, I think you learn a lot about how to handle the occasions better going forward.Murray trailed 4-1 in the second set Sunday, and 4-2 in the third, before wiggling his way back in front each time.He won the last four games, breaking for a 5-4 lead when Djokovic flubbed a forehand, setting off a standing ovation and applause that lasted more than a full minute. When he got out of his changeover chair, preparing to serve for the title, an earsplitting roar accompanied his trek to the baseline.Djokovic missed a backhand, Murray smacked a backhand winner and added a 211 kph (131 mph) service winner, and suddenly one point was all that remained between him and history. Thats where things got a tad complicated. On match point No. 1, Djokovic capped a 12-stroke exchange with a forehand volley winner. On No. 2, Djokovic hit a backhand return winner off a 135 kph (84 mph) second serve. On No. 3, Murray sailed a backhand long on the ninth shot. Now it was deuce.I started to feel nervous and started thinking about what just happened, Murray said. Theres a lot of things youre thinking of at that moment. The match continued for eight additional points.Seemed to take an eternity.Just how that last game went, my head was kind of everywhere. I mean, some of the shots he came up with were unbelievable, Murray said. At the end of the match, I didnt quite know what was going on. Just a lot of different emotions.Any of Djokovics break points in that game would have made it 5-all, and who knows what toll that would have taken on Murrays mind? But Murray erased the first two chances with a service winner, then a forehand winner on the 21st stroke. At deuce for a third time, Djokovic conjured up a forehand passing winner to get his third break point. Murray dropped his head and placed his hands on his knees. The crowd clapped rhythmically and shouted, Andy Andy They couldnt know it, but their man wouldnt lose another point. On a 16-shot exchange, Djokovic delivered an overhead that was retrieved, then tried a drop shot that Murray got back. Djokovic put the ball in the net, and Murray was at match point No. 4. When that one went Murrays way, the ball on Djokovics side of the court, Murray dropped his neon-red racket, yanked his white hat off and pumped both fists overhead, screaming, Yes Yes He was looking directly at the corner of the stadium with benches for members of the press, a group that he used to worry helped fuel the intense pressure and only-one-way-to-satisfy-them expectations on Murrays shoulders. Its hard. Its really hard. You know, for the last four or five years, its been very, very tough, very stressful, Murray said. Its just kind of everywhere you go. Its so hard to avoid everything because of how big this event is, but also because of the history and no Brit having won. When a Brit did win, 15,000 or so spectators around the arena rose and yelled right back at him, some waving Union Jacks or blue-and-white Scottish flags. Soon, Murray was climbing into the guest box for hugs with his girlfriend, his mother and his coach, Ivan Lendl, who won eight major titles as a player but never fared better than the runner-up at Wimbledon.I didnt always feel it was going to happen, said Murray, who fumbled with his gold trophy after the ceremony, dropping the lid. Its incredibly difficult to win these events. I dont think thats that well-understood sometimes. It takes so much hard work, mental toughness, to win these sort of tournaments. At the end, across the grounds, thousands responded with cheers while watching on a giant videoboard at the picnic lawn known as Murray Mount. And, surely, millions more following along on TV across Britain stood up from their sofas. British Prime Minister David Cameron was in the Royal Box, a sign of the days significance, and Buckingham Palace confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II sent Murray a private message afterward. The end of the match, that was incredibly loud, very noisy, Murray said. It does make a difference. It really helps when the crowds like that, the atmosphere is like that. Especially in a match as tough as that one, where its extremely hot, brutal, long rallies, tough games they help you get through it.Said Djokovic, who famously ate blades of grass after winning Wimbledon in 2011: The atmosphere was incredible for him. For me, not so much. But thats what I expected. The fans were active participants throughout, lamenting awwww when Murray missed a serve; cheering rowdily when he hit one of his 36 winners, five more than Djokovic; shushing in unison when someone called out in premature agony or delight while a point was in progress. That was understandable. Points rarely are over when they appear to be if Murray and Djokovic are involved. The elastic Djokovics sliding carries him to so many shots, while Murray is more of a powerful scrambler. It took a half-hour to get through the opening five games, in part because 10 of 32 points lasted at least 10 strokes apiece. And this all happened with the temperature above 27 degrees C (80 degrees F), with only the occasional puff of cloud interrupting the blue sky.Born a week apart in May 1987, Murray and Djokovic have known each other since they were 11, and they grasp the ins and outs of each others games so well.Youve got to fight so hard to get past Novak, because hes such an incredible competitor, an amazing athlete, and its never over til its over, Judy Murray said. This was their 19th meeting on tour (Djokovic leads 11-8), and their fourth in a Grand Slam final, including three in the past year. Both are fantastic returners, and Murray broke seven times Sunday, once more than Djokovic lost his serve in the preceding six matches combined. In the late going, Djokovic was taking some shortcuts, repeatedly trying drop shots or rushing to the net to shorten points, but neither strategy tended to work.He was getting some incredible shots on the stretch and running down the drop shots, Djokovic said. He was all over the court.Admittedly feeling the effects of his five-setter Friday against Juan Martin del Potro at 4 hours, 43 minutes, its the longest semifinal in Wimbledon history Djokovic was far more erratic than Murray, with particular problems on the backhand side. Djokovic wound up with 40 unforced errors, nearly double Murrays 21.I wasnt patient enough, Djokovic said.Ah, patience. The British needed plenty when it comes to their precious, prestigious tennis tournament. Thanks to Murray, the wait is over.
Nestor, Mladenovic win mixed doubles title Posted: LONDON (AP) - Daniel Nestor of Canada and Kristina Mladenovic of France saved two match points, then went on to win the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon on Sunday by beating top-seeded Bruno Soares of Brazil and Lisa Raymond of the United States 5-7, 6-2, 8-6.Nestor and Mladenovic, seeded eighth, saved their match points when trailing 6-5 in the third set on Centre Court. They then broke Soares serve at 6-6 when Raymond and Soares hit back-to-back unforced errors into the net.The win for Nestor was his third major mixed doubles title. The Canadian also won the Australian Open in 2007 and 11.
Iraq beat SKorea on penalties at U20 World Cup Posted: ISTANBUL (AP) - Iraq conceded the lead three times to draw 3-3 with South Korea on Sunday before winning the penalty shootout to reach its first Under-20 World Cup semifinal.Striker Farhan Shakor, who scored twice in regulation, converted the decisive penalty after Lee Chang-geuns spot kick was saved by goalkeeper Mohammed Hameed.Iraq, which beat Paraguay 1-0 through Shakors goal in extra time in the previous round, will play Uruguay for a place in the final. After the match ended 2-2, Farhan looked to have sent Iraq through with his goal in the 118th minute, only for Jung Hyun-cheol to equalize for South Korea with the last kick of the match.Ghana and Chile were scheduled to play their semifinal later Sunday, with the winner taking on France.
Formula One: Vettel wins German Grand Prix Posted: NUERBURGRING (AP) - Three-time defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel surged ahead in his Red Bull at the start of the German Grand Prix on Sunday and held off a strong challenge from the two Lotus cars to win his first race on home soil. There were no tire blowouts but the race had its share of bizarre incidents, with a loose wheel flying through the air in the pit lane and an abandoned car drifting on its own down the track.Vettel started second behind pole sitter Lewis Hamilton and powered past the Mercedes driver into the first bend. The German then held off the Lotus pair of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean for his fourth win of the season. Raikkonen was second, only one second behind, and Grosjean third. Ferraris Fernando Alonso took fourth. Its incredible to win at home, a great relief, Vettel said.Vettels 30th career victory extended his championship lead over Alonso to 34 points 157 vs. 123. Raikkonen moved up to third with 116.Hamilton struggled with his tires and finished fifth as Mercedes again failed to live up to the promise of a fast qualifying.Hamilton was also passed by the other Red Bull of Mark Webber before the first bend, who went past Hamilton on the outside as Vettel drove by inside. But Webber lost a wheel when he was released from his first pit stop too soon and finished seventh after dropping to the back of the field after the incident. The flying wheel struck British cameraman Paul Allen in the left side. He remained conscious and was treated at the circuit before being taken to a nearby hospital for observation. While the tires held and made the threat of a drivers boycott redundant, another scary incident took place when Jules Bianchis Marussia spewed smoke and caught fire briefly. Bianchi got out of the car, which started freewheeling down the track on its own. There were no other cars coming as the driverless vehicle ended up on grass, hit a trackside billboard and came to a halt as stewards rushed to control it.That brought on the safety car for a few laps, which brought the Lotus cars closer to Vettel.
Martin wins Tour de France 9th stage Posted: BAGNERES-DE-BIGORRE (AFP) - Irishman Dan Martin won the ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday after a dramatic day of racing in the Pyrenees saw yellow jersey holder Chris Froome forced to dig deep to defend his race lead.Martin, of the Garmin team, came over the finish with his arms in triumph after beating Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) in a two-up sprint.Froome and all the race favourites arrived 19sec later although the Kenyan-born Briton was the sole surviving member of a Sky team over the 168.5km race from Saint-Girons to Bagneres-de-Bigorre.Post-race speculation on Saturday, when Richie Porte finished the first day in the Pyrenees second overall at only 51sec behind Froome, suggested Sky could aim for a second consecutive 1-2 finish in Paris on July 21.However, the Australian was the main casualty of a frantic start to the race, and an even more concerted effort to drop him later on, as teams appeared to collude in an attempt to drop him down the standings and boost their own hopes.Porte, the 2013 Paris-Nice champion, was over 11 minutes in arrears when Froome came over the finish line alongside rivals Alejandro Valverde, Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans among others. It meant Valverde, whose Movistar team were protagonists on most of the days five categorised mountain climbs, has moved up to second place, only 1min 25sec behind Froome.Bauke Mollema (Belkin) moved up to third overall ahead of fellow-Dutchman and teammate Laurens Ten Dam, while Spains two-time winner Contador moved up one place to sixth at 1:51 off the pace.Martins maiden win on the race, a few months after he lifted his biggest race at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, put the Irishman into the top 10 where he is eighth overall at 2:28.He is from solid cycling stock, being the nephew of former Tour de France, Giro dItalia and world champion Stephen Roche.Martin had hoped to slip into an early breakaway and go on to fight for the win but during an epic day of racing, the Irishman was forced to attack Froomes group of favourites on the final climb. He and Fuglsang crested the summit with a 40sec lead on the chasing peloton and held them off on the 30km descent into Bagneres.I was confident in the final, I knew I could produce the speed I needed but after such a hard stage, but youre never sure, said Martin. To come across the line and realise Ive won a stage of the Tour de France was amazing but I was so focussed on his (Fuglsangs) wheel, and on the finish line and getting their first.
Two new MERS deaths in Saudi Arabia: ministry Posted: RIYADH (AFP) - A Saudi man and a child have died from the MERS virus, bringing the number of deaths from the respiratory infection in the kingdom to 38, the health ministry said on Sunday. The 53-year-old man died from the SARS-like illness in Eastern Province, where the illness first broke out last year, the ministrys website reported. The second victim was a two-year-old boy in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, it added. It also reported three new confirmed MERS infections, two men in Riyadh aged 66 and 69, and a foreign employee in the health sector in Hafr al-Batin in the east. The new cases bring the number of confirmed MERS infections in Saudi Arabia to 65 since the outbreak began. The World Health Organisation announced on Friday it had convened emergency talks on the MERS virus, which is striking hardest in Saudi Arabia. The move came amid concern about the potential impact of Octobers hajj pilgrimage, when millions of Muslims from around the globe head to and from Saudi Arabia. The WHO has not recommended any MERS-related travel restrictions, but says countries should monitor unusual respiratory infection patterns. The first recorded MERS death was in June last year in Saudi Arabia.Experts are struggling to understand MERS, short for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus. It shares the flu-like symptoms of its cousin SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, but differs in that it also causes kidney failure.Like SARS, MERS is thought to have jumped from animals to humans. It seems deadliest for older men who already have other medical conditions, and can spread between humans, but so far appears far less contagious than SARS.There have been cases in Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, while Britain, France, Italy, Tunisia and Britain have recorded transmission to patients who did not travel to the Middle East but had close contact with people who did.
Rain pushes Windies-Sri Lanka ODI to reserve day Posted: PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) - Torrential showers forced the abandonment of play after 19 overs of the fifth match of the Tri-Nation Series between the West Indies and Sri Lanka at the Queens Park Oval on Sunday.Weather permitting, the match will continue on the reserve day, Monday, with the Sri Lankans at 60 for three and seeking to recover from a wobbly opening after they were put in to bat by West Indies stand-in captain Kieron Pollard.Left-handers Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne were left to repair the early damage done to their batting line-up by the Barbadian fast bowling pair of Kemar Roach and Jason Holder who exploited the humid conditions and a pitch offering disconcerting pace and bounce.Playing his first match of the tournament after specialist spinner Sunil Narine was sidelined by a finger injury, the gangling Holder made the early strike, removing Upul Tharanga via a superb catch by Darren Bravo at cover after the opening batsman was missed in the previous over by wicketkeeper Johnson Charles off Roach.Roachs luck turned just a few minutes later when the experienced and prolific former captain Mahela Jayawardene top-edged an attempted pull onto his helmet and the rebound lobbed into the grateful hands of Devon Smith at square-leg.The diminutive fast bowler then produced the classic off-cutter to breach the defence of Dinesh Chandimal, hitting the top of his off-stump and leaving Sri Lanka in considerable trouble at 29 for three in the seventh over.Under increasingly overcast conditions, Sangakkara and Thirimanne worked to stem the tide, eliminating risks and quietly accumulating runs while also benefitting from the surprising indiscipline of the three fastest bowlers in the West Indies armoury as 16 wides and two no-balls helped the visitors along. In contrast, Darren Sammy completed four overs of controlled medium-pace at a cost of just four runs, including two maidens.Disappointingly for the match and the near full-house of over 15,000 spectators, the expected showers arrived at mid-morning, increasing in sustained intensity to leave the ground waterlogged. With no indication of a break in the weather, umpires Nigel Llong and Joel Wilson had little option but to declare an abandonment of play at 1.30 p.m.While there is hope of a resumption of the match on the reserve day, a repetition of the heavy showers cannot be ruled out. July is the rainiest month of the year in Trinidad and local cricket authorities had previously steered clear of hosting any international matches in the latter half of the year for precisely that reason.Should inclement weather, or any other factor, prevent the match from being completed, a no-result will be declared and the points shared, a situation that will qualify the West Indies for the July 11 final.Sri Lanka now face a challenging prospect to get to the final as improved weather on Monday could see them playing virtually a full match and then returning to the Queens Park Oval on Tuesday for the scheduled final preliminary fixture.
