Nawaz meets Saudi king

MAKKAH, Aug 3: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called on Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud here on Saturday.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Hussain Nawaz were present on the occasion.

PPP vows to defend provinces’ rights

ISLAMABAD, Aug 3: The PPP warned the government on Saturday against any move to deprive the smaller provinces of their rights on the use of natural resources in accordance with the constitution, saying such a step would be strongly resisted.

Reacting sharply to remarks of Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who called for a change in the gas-sharing formula, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah said any “such attempt will be resisted tooth and nail by all the opposition and political parties belonging to smaller provinces to safeguard the interests of the provinces, minorities and the downtrodden segments of the society”.

Security alerts by US, Interpol prompt embassy closures

PARIS, Aug 3: Interpol issued on Saturday a global security alert after gunmen linked to Al Qaeda freed hundreds of militants in jailbreaks, as the United States and other Western powers planned to temporarily close certain embassies over terrorism threats.

Washington ordered its embassies across the Muslim world temporarily closed, while Germany, Britain and France were to shut their missions in Yemen for at least two days.

Farman Fatehpuri passes away at 87

KARACHI, Aug 3: Noted scholar, researcher and literary icon Dr Farman Fatehpuri died after a long illness on Saturday. He was 87.

He is survived by his wife, four daughters and two sons.

Suicide attack on Indian consulate in Afghanistan

JALALABAD, Aug 3: Suicide bombers targeted the Indian consulate in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad on Saturday, detonating an explosives-packed car and killing nine civilians, including seven children in a nearby mosque.

A spokesman for the Taliban immediately denied responsibility for the blast that erupted outside the Indian mission and left the mosque, houses and shops in ruins.

Pakistan condemns Jalalabad strike

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday condemned a suicide attack that targeted Indian Consulate in the Afghan city of Jalalabad and said terrorism was a common enemy confronting the countries of the region.

“Pakistan strongly condemns the suicide attack in Jalalabad today which resulted in the loss of many innocent lives. We extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families,” Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said.

President accepts Fakhru Bhai’s resignation

ISLAMABAD, Aug 3: President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday accepted the resignation tendered by Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim before embarking on a visit to Iran, sources told Dawn.

In pursuance of article 217 of the constitution, the chief justice of Pakistan will now nominate a judge of the apex court as acting chief election commissioner till a new commissioner was chosen by a parliamentary committee for a five-year term.

Indian spy plane violates airspace

SIALKOT, Aug 3: An Indian spy plane violated Pakistani airspace in Chaprar sector on Saturday afternoon.

Chenab Rangers spokesman Maj Asad Mahmood told reporters that the Indian spy plane (RPV) entered Pakistani territory from Butti 865 at 1.55pm and went back at 1.57pm from the BSF Post in Jammu Sector after violating Pakistani airspace for about one and a half minutes. He said the green plane flew at approximately 3,500feet and entered up to 350 metres into Pakistan’s airspace.
