US closed missions after Zawahri message intercept: NYT

NEW YORK: US intelligence intercepted conversations between Pakistan-based Ayman Al Zawahri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden as the head of Al Qaeda, and Nasser al-Wuhayshi, the head of the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which revealed a most serious plot since 9/11 and it forced the Obama administration to shut down some 21 or more US missions in the Middle East, the New York Times reported in its online edition on Monday afternoon.

Sarwar takes oath as Punjab governor

LAHORE, Aug 5: Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar was sworn in as the 35th governor of Punjab at an impressive ceremony here on Monday.

Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath to Mr Sarwar at the ceremony attended among others by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Mohammad Iqbal and diplomats.

Security for Punjab jails beefed up

RAWALPINDI: In a late-night move, well-equipped contingents of Rangers were deployed on all central jails across Punjab, including Central Jail Adiala which houses about 70 terrorist suspects, it is learnt.

The source said that as part of the reviewed security arrangements 27 Rangers were added to the 18 already deployed at the Adiala jail on Monday night to further tighten security around the over-crowded jail.

Infant killed, 35 injured in train blast

TOBA TEK SINGH / LAHORE, Aug 5: An infant died and 35 passengers suffered injuries when a bomb exploded in the Karachi-bound Shalimar Express near Chuttiana railway station, 17km from Toba Tek Singh, on Monday.

Citing preliminary reports, Railways Minister Khwaja Saad Rafiq said at a news conference in Lahore that up to 10kgs of locally-made explosives in a polythene bag had been placed in the toilet of an Economy Class bogie.

Kasauti icon Quresh Pur passes away

KARACHI, Aug 5: Quresh Pur, the host of Kasauti, arguably the most popular quiz show in the history of Pakistani television, passed away here on Monday afternoon after a protracted illness.

He was 81.
