‘NAB to pursue cases against Sharif, Zardari’

ISLAMABAD, Oct 13: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Chaudhry Qamar Zaman has decided to reopen and pursue major corruption cases, including those against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former president Asif Ali Zardari and other prominent politicians.

Two million pilgrims converge on Mina

MINA (Saudi Arabia), Oct 13: Some two million pilgrims streamed into Mina Valley from the holy city of Makkah on Sunday, marking the beginning of Haj.

Authorities announced at noon that all the pilgrims had reached Mina from Makkah. Saudi Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef said the number of pilgrims from outside the country totalled 1,379,531, down 21 per cent on last year’s 1.75m. Around 1.29m of them had flown to Saudi Arabia from 188 countries, he said, without giving a figure for pilgrims residing in the kingdom whose number is believed to have been halved.

11 Balochistan ministers take oath today

QUETTA, Oct 13: About five months after the general elections, another 11 ministers belonging to four parties are being inducted into the Balochistan cabinet.

They will be administered oath of office by Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai on Monday.

90 killed in India temple stampede

BHOPAL, Oct 13: A stampede on a bridge outside a Hindu temple killed more than 90 people in India on Sunday, with many of the victims leaping to their deaths in the water below.

Police warned that the number could rise as doctors struggled to make their way through hordes of pilgrims to reach the scene of the tragedy — the latest in a string of disasters at religious festivals.

Wazirs told to take action against attackers

LADHA, Oct 13: The political administration of South Waziristan has warned the Ahmedzai Wazir tribe in the agency to hand over perpetrators of the Oct 13 suicide attack within three days or face action.

The warning was issued by Political Agent Islam Zeb at a jirga, which was held in his office at Wana on Saturday and attended by around 3,000 tribal elders, including ulema and a 120-member peace committee.

Malala says not a West’s puppet

LONDON, Oct 13: Malala Yousufzai hit back at allegations that she has become a figure of the West, insisting she is proud to be a Pakistani.

The 16-year-old education campaigner said she retained the support of people, and reiterated her desire to enter Pakistani politics.

HRCP for talks with Baloch insurgents

LAHORE, Oct 13: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called upon the government to hold immediate talks with Baloch insurgents, both within and outside the country, without any impunity to individuals among them causing grave human rights violations.

Launching a report of its fact-finding mission to Balochistan here on Sunday, the commission also urged the insurgents to respect the wishes of people supporting restoration of normalcy and political stability, stop attacks on innocent civilians and give peace a chance.

Army man, brother killed in blast

SAHIWAL, Oct 13: An army hawaldar and his brother died and their nephew suffered critical injuries when explosives they were allegedly preparing in their farmhouse went off on Sunday morning.

Police quoted family sources as saying that hawaldar Gulam Hyder, currently on leave before retirement, and his brother Gulam Nabi were carrying out an experiment to generate electricity by linking a box containing some substances with a battery in their village when powerful explosion took place.

Mumtaz Bhutto’s son made adviser to PM

ISLAMABAD, Oct 13: Ameer Bux Bhutto, son of PML-N leader Mumtaz Bhutto, was made adviser to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday.

According to a notification, the president made the appointment with immediate effect on the advice of the prime minister and Mr Ameer Bhutto would enjoy the status of a federal minister.

Organisations of ex-servicemen

ISLAMABAD, Oct 13: Two major organisations of retired military personnel — the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Association and the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society — have decided to merge to mobilise over two million ex-servicemen for ‘defending national interests’. The decision was taken on Sunday at a meeting of the representatives of the two organisations.

 

Three suspected militants seized

QUETTA, Oct 13: The Frontier Corps (FC) claimed to have taken into custody three suspected militants after an exchange of fire with them in Sui town of Dera Bugti district on Sunday.

An FC spokesman said that security personnel launched a search operation in the town during which they were fired upon from suspected hideouts of militants.
