Sharif, Obama likely to launch efforts for rebuilding ties

WASHINGTON, Oct 20: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Washington on Sunday on a four-day trip to the United States to discuss issues that have soured relations between the two countries.

The visit begins on a positive note. A day before his arrival, the Obama administration announced it was releasing more than $1.6 billion in economic and military assistance to Pakistan.

Napoleon ‘defeated’ in Leipzig, again

LEIPZIG (Germany), Oct 20: Thousands of history buffs in early 19th-century costumes took to a historic battlefield outside Leipzig, Germany, on Sunday to re-enact the Battle of the Nations that left French emperor Napoleon’s army critically beaten 200 years ago.

The mock battle opened with a line of French troops dressed in brilliant green, red, light blue and grey uniforms, bayonets raised, marching toward villagers in period costumes huddled around a cluster of thatched-roof cottages.

India rejects US mediation on Kashmir

NEW DELHI, Oct 20: India rejected on Sunday Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s suggestion for US mediation in the Kashmir dispute and Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said it would be a waste of time to question Delhi’s claim over the troubled region.

In an interview to NDTV, Mr Khurshid voiced concern over ceasefire violations at the Line of Control and hoped these do not result in any more casualties.

Sindh ready to hold LG elections, says Qaim

KARACHI, Oct 20: Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has said the provincial government wants to hold local bodies’ elections as early as possible and all arrangements in this regard are being finalised in accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court.

Presiding over a meeting on the issue of LG elections at the Chief Minister House here on Sunday, he said that under Article 140-A of the constitution, provincial governments were responsible for carrying out delimitation and making law for the local bodies.

Afghan commander joins insurgents

KUNAR, Oct 20: An Afghan army special forces commander has defected to an insurgent group allied with the Taliban in a humvee truck packed with his team’s guns and high-tech equipment, officials in the eastern Kunar province said on Sunday.

Monsif Khan, who raided the supplies of his 20-man team in Kunar’s capital Asadabad over Eid holidays, is the first special forces commander to switch sides, joining the Hezb-e-Islami organisation.

India to acquire N-submarine from Russia

NEW DELHI, Oct 20: Faced with a depleting fleet of submarines, India is expected to acquire on lease a nuclear submarine from Russia, a deal which may be finalised during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Moscow starting on Sunday.

The move comes two months after the Indian Navy’s frontline Russian-origin Kilo Class INS Sindhurakshak submarine sank at the Mumbai harbour after an explosion suspected to have occurred in its torpedo section.

Two mistakenly freed US prisoners re-arrested

PANAMA CITY BEACH (United States), Oct 20: Police recaptured two convicted killers who were freed from a Florida prison by phoney documents, and authorities shifted attention to finding out who was responsible for the mistaken releases that rocked the state’s judicial system.

Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker, both 34, were captured on Saturday night without incident at the Coconut Grove Motor Inn in Panama City Beach, a touristy area of putt-putt courses and go-kart tracks. Hours earlier, their families had held a news conference urging them to surrender.
