PM says drone raids must be halted

Rights groups accuse US of violating international law

ISLAMABAD, Oct 22: Human rights groups on Tuesday accused the United States of breaking international law and perhaps committing war crimes by killing civilians in missile and drone strikes that were intended to hit militants in Pakistan and Yemen.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch released separate reports detailing the deaths of dozens of civilians in the two countries. They urged the Obama administration and Congress to investigate, and end a policy of secrecy on the attacks.

Membership of 26 lawmakers suspended

ISLAMABAD, Oct 22: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) suspended on Tuesday the membership of 26 lawmakers for their failure to meet the mandatory requirement of submitting statements of their assets and liabilities even three weeks after expiry of the deadline.

An official of the ECP told Dawn that letters had been sent to the chairman of the Senate and the speakers of the national and provincial assemblies to ensure that the suspended legislators did not attend proceedings of the houses till restoration of their membership after submission of the statements.

‘Those who topple govts should be punished’

WASHINGTON, Oct 22: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif stressed on Tuesday the need to punish those responsible for toppling elected governments and introducing suicide bombings to the country.

He emphasised this point also in his address to the Pakistani community on Monday evening, asking his audience to single out those who introduced “the culture of suicide bombings, removed judges and toppled elected governments”.

US insists drones do not violate law

WASHINGTON: The United States denied on Tuesday its drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere infringed upon international law and said it did all it could to avoid civilian casualties.

The comments followed the publication of reports on the US drone war by two human rights groups.

Punjab kitchens may face gas loadshedding in winter

LAHORE, Oct 22: The coming winter is going to be tough for gas consumers in Punjab with the increasing supply shortage projected to shoot up from 900mmcfd next month to 1400mmcfd in January because of the usual steep increase in demand due to cold weather.

While the industry will struggle to carry on its production operations and CNG stations are likely to dry up for three months from December onwards, domestic consumers will probably not have gas to heat their homes and water. The heating needs of domestic consumers are estimated to quadruple their demand for the fuel during the cold weather.

SC seeks record of Nepra’s public hearings

ISLAMABAD, Oct 22: The Supreme Court has sought complete record of Nepra’s public hearings about increase in power tariff during August and October.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry asked the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority Chairman Khawaja Naeem on Tuesday to apprise it if the stakeholders had been given an opportunity during the public hearings to participate in the process of determination of power tariff or the decision had been taken unilaterally.

Pakistan, India DGMOs talk on phone

NEW DELHI, Oct 22: The military operations chiefs of India and Pakistan held their weekly phone conversation on Tuesday amid reports that their face-to-face meeting, mandated by their prime ministers during their recent talks in New York, could take some more time, Press Trust of India said.

A PTI report accused Pakistan of continued ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the international border. A separate report quoted Indian Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde as saying that Pakistani cleric Hafiz Saeed was behind the recent upsurge of alleged cross-border infiltration of militants into the Kashmir Valley.

Shelling by Indian troops injures woman

MUZAFFARABAD, Oct 22: A woman was injured in shelling from across the Line of Control in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

Kotli’s Deputy Commissioner Masoodur Rehman told Dawn by telephone that after a pause of two days, Indian troops resumed shelling in Nakial sector, targeting civilian populations.

Qatari minister’s staff attacked in Balochistan

Rockets fired by Afghan militants hit Bajaur village

PML-N rejects India’s statement on Kashmir

ISLAMABAD, Oct 22: Neither the Simla Accord nor the Lahore Declaration has revoked undertaking by India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the United Nations (UN) resolutions, says chairman of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Raja Zafarul Haq.

Speaking at a news conference with the party’s media coordinator Asim Khan at the PML-N’s Secretariat, Mr Haq rejected the statement of Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid that Kashmir was an integral part of India and that the dispute was a bilateral issue.

Quake survivors need food, shelter, says UN report

KARACHI, Oct 22: An independent report prepared by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has said that lack of food security and proper shelter remain the most challenging aspect of relief work in the earthquake-hit areas of Awaran and Kech districts in Balochistan.

Two powerful earthquakes struck parts of the province last month. The combined death toll of the earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.8 on the Richter scale is 386 while 816 people, including children, were injured, according to figures released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
