Indian forces blamed for truce violations

Sharif asks Obama to rethink drone policy

WASHINGTON, Oct 23: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif urged US President Barack Obama on Wednesday to end drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

Sitting next to President Obama in the Oval Office, Mr Sharif said he “brought up the issues of drones during our meeting, emphasising the need for an end to such strikes”.

US wants release of Dr Afridi

WASHINGTON: The White House urged Pakistan on Wednesday to release Dr Shakil Afridi, minutes before Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived at the official residence of the US president for talks on key issues.

The physician, who helped CIA trace Osama bin Laden, has been imprisoned for a crime he allegedly committed before the US raid on Bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad.

China, India sign border defence agreement

BEIJING, Oct 23: China and India signed an agreement on Wednesday on border defence cooperation after a stand-off along their disputed frontier in April fuelled fears of conflict.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, visiting Beijing to seek a breakthrough in the territorial row that has soured relations for decades, witnessed the signing of the pact alongside Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

2 policemen killed in Karachi attack

KARACHI, Oct 23: Two more police officers were shot dead in targeted attacks by unidentified terrorists on Wednesday, taking the death toll of policemen to 142 over the past 10 months in Karachi alone.

The two policemen were identified as Head Constables Qazi Aalam and Javed. Their injured colleague was identified as Nadeem.

No LG polls schedule till prerequisites completed

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: The Election Commission of Pakistan plainly informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday that it could schedule local government elections only after the attending prerequisites were completed.

A reply filed on behalf of the ECP by senior counsel Akram Sheikh listed features like completion of delimitation process, necessary changes in laws and election rules, door-to-door verification by the ECP, preparation of fresh electoral rolls by Nadra and provinces, procurement of election materials by the commission and printing of ballot papers by the Printing Corporation of Pakistan and the Security Printing Corporation.

PPP rejects anti-terrorism ordinance

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: The main opposition Pakistan Peoples Party on Wednesday rejected the new ordinance that gave extraordinary powers to law-enforcement agencies to curb terrorism, and termed it “an assault on the fundamental rights” of citizens.

“The ordinance in its present form is not acceptable,” said PPP’s Parliamentary Leader in the Senate Raza Rabbani while talking to reporters.

Tax returns can be filed till Nov 30

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: The Federal Board of Revenue has further extended the last date for filing returns/statements by companies and individuals from October 31 to November 30.

According to an FBR handout, the date for filing returns of total income/statements of final taxation has also been extended to Nov 30.

Three groups active in Xinjiang banned

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: The government of Pakistan has accepted a Chinese demand to proscribe three extremist organisations which are said to be active in the north-western region of Xinjiang.

According to BBCUrdu.com, the three organisations — East Turkistan Islamic Movement, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and Islamic Jihad Union — have been put on the list of proscribed militant organisations after reports that their members were planning terrorist activities in the region and inciting people against the Chinese government.—Monitoring Desk

UK couple jailed for rape, trafficking of deaf girl

LONDON, Oct 23: A British court jailed an elderly couple on Wednesday after a deaf and mute girl was trafficked from Pakistan to work as a servant and then repeatedly raped for nearly a decade.

Ilyas Ashar, 84, and his wife Tallat Ashar, 68, kept the girl in the cellar of their house in Salford, northwest England, after she was illegally brought to Britain in 2000 at the age of around 10.
