Review leads to adjustment in power rates for 2012-13By Sohail Iqbal BhattiISLAMABAD, Oct 24: After a review of fuel price adjustments made between July 2012 and May this year, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has decided to provide a relief of Rs31 billion to consumers reeling under a skyrocketing tariff hike made on Oct 11. According to official documents, Nepra has decided to decrease the rate of electricity used in July last year by 62 paisa per unit, for August by 38 paisa, October 50 paisa, November 65 paisa, December 28 paisa, January 62 paisa, February 21paisa, March Rs1.06, April Rs1.77 and May 93 paisa. | ||||||||||||||
Sialkot border villages hit hard by firingBy Abid Hussain MehdiSIALKOT, Oct 24: Unprovoked shelling and indiscriminate firing by Indian troops from across the border have caused the suspension of harvesting of paddy and other crops in villages along the Sialkot Working Boundary, residents of the affected areas told a team of foreign and local journalists on Thursday. Secret assent for drone strikes no more: FOBy Baqir Sajjad SyedISLAMABAD, Oct 24: While not denying explicitly that the previous government had endorsed drone attacks by the US, the Foreign Office on Thursday chose to speak only about the current administration, saying the government’s stance against drone attacks was very clear. “Whatever understandings there may or may not have been in the past, the present government has been very clear regarding its policy on the issue,” Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said while responding to a question regarding a Washington Post report that Pakistan government had been on board with regard to drone attacks, at least during the four-year period from 2007 to 2011. | ||||||||||||||

Punjab opposes plea seeking review of verdict on land reformsBy Nasir IqbalISLAMABAD, Oct 24: The government of Punjab opposed on Thursday a petition moved by the Workers Party Pakistan (WPP) seeking review of the 1993 Supreme Court judgment which had said that the land reforms introduced by former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was un-Islamic. In its reply filed by Additional Advocate General of Punjab Haneef Khatana, the provincial government said the motive behind the petition was a second review of a verdict already reviewed by the Supreme Court’s Shariat Appellate Bench in the Qazalbash Waqf case. | ||||||||||||||
Shells fired from Afghanistan land in WaziristanBy Our CorrespondentMIRAMSHAH, Oct 24: Ten mortar shells fired from across the Afghan border landed in Ghulam Khan area of North Waziristan on Thursday, but caused no loss of life or property. The incident happened during skirmishes between Afghan forces and Afghan Taliban near the Tarkhobi military base of Nato forces in Khost province. The two sides used heavy weapons against each other. | ||||||||||||||
