Iran hangs 16 ‘rebels’ after ambush

TEHRAN, Oct 26: Iran said it executed 16 “rebels” on Saturday in reprisal after gunmen killed 14 guards near the border with Pakistan, in a rugged area often rocked by violence.

The ambush took place late on Friday night in the mountains of Sistan-Baluchestan, which neighbours Pakistan.

UN expert contests US claim on drones

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 26: The unanimous resolution by Pakistan’s democratically elected parliament earlier this year negated any suggestion that the country had consented to American drone attacks, UN human rights expert Ben Emmerson told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

Responding to questions on legality of drone attacks, he said greater transparency and accountability were needed in the light of international obligation to ensure full reparations to victims and their families.

PCB chief, ex-players fume over ‘leniency’

DUBAI, Oct 26: Pakistani cricket officials fumed on Saturday over the second Test ball-tampering row which saw South Africa’s Faf du Plessis being slapped with a small fine, claiming punishment would have been more severe had a player from the Sub-continent been involved.

Du Plessis was fined 50 per cent of his match fee after admitting tampering with the ball during the third day of the second Test on Friday.

11 killed in Lyari clashes

KARACHI, Oct 26: Life remained paralysed in Karachi’s Lyari area on Saturday as a daylong gunbattle between rival criminal groups and their encounters with security personnel left 11 people dead, including children and women. Four suspected criminals were also among the dead.

The clashes, which have been going on for the past three days, have forced people to stay indoors, raising question marks over the effectiveness of targeted operations being conducted by police and Rangers.

Two FC men killed in blast

QUETTA, Oct 26: Two personnel of security forces were killed in a bomb blast in Mastung district but a bus carrying pilgrims to Iran, which was passing through the area, remained safe.

According to Mastung’s Deputy Commissioner Mehrab Shah, saboteurs had planted the bomb on Quetta-Taftan highway in the Dringhar area. It exploded when personnel of the Frontier Corps were searching a parked car.

Villager injured in firing by India

MUZAFFARABAD: Indian troops sniped at a villager in Azad Jammu and Kashmir from across the Line of Control on Saturday, leaving him wounded, police said.

Kala Khan, 78, was cutting grass in Darra Sher Khan village of district Poonch, when he was hit in the arm.

PTI to get ‘tough’ with N-League

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: Claiming that the ‘honeymoon period’ of the ruling party is over, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has decided to toughen its stance towards the PML-N, both inside and outside the parliament.

Sources in the party said the PTI leadership during a meeting of the party’s Core Committee here on Saturday had decided to play the role of ‘real opposition’ to put pressure on the government to improve governance and take steps for the welfare of the masses.

18th Amendment: body to work on legal lacunas

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: The government constituted on Saturday a committee to suggest legislation required to be passed by parliament to remove legal lacunas hindering the implementation of the 18th Amendment.

A committee headed by federal Minister Zahid Hamid was formed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his first meeting with newly appointed Law Secretary Zafarullah Khan. Special Assistant to the PM Khawaja Zaheeruddin and the law secretary are the other members of the committee.
