Provinces unlikely to meet LB poll deadline

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: The fate of local bodies (LB) elections in three provinces on the schedule proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) appears to be gloomy as none of the provinces has so far completed the prerequisites for announcement of the schedule and the issue of printing of over 500 million ballot papers in the limited time also could not be resolved on Tuesday.

Information bill will discourage applicants

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: Senators across party lines endorsed on Tuesday a report of the Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting on the Right to Information Bill, 2013, whose emphasis appears to be hiding rather than giving easy access to information.

The chairman of the standing committee, Kamil Ali Agha of the PML-Q, presented the report before the house. The committee had unanimously approved the draft bill on Aug 28 this year.

Cracker blasts rock Sindh; man killed

HYDERABAD, Oct 29: A man was killed and nine others were injured as blasts, mainly caused by crackers, rocked Karachi and several other cities and towns of Sindh on Tuesday on the eve of a strike called by a nationalist party against the recently promulgated anti-terror law.

According to a spokesperson for Sindh police, at least 17 explosions were reported from Hyderabad, Karachi, Khairpur, Larkana, Dadu, Nawabshah and Qazi Ahmed.

Commitment to Afghan peace affirmed

LONDON, Oct 29: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and British Prime Minister David Cameron reaffirmed on Tuesday their continuing commitment for the Afghan peace process.

The three leaders, during their meeting held here, discussed economic cooperation and the Afghan-led peace process to which they all reaffirmed their commitment.They continued their dialogue about Afghanistan and Pakistan’s shared interest in advancing regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Pak-India accord to end border skirmishes

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: Pakistan and India agreed on Tuesday to suspend hostilities along the ‘Working Boundary’ which last week witnessed worst skirmishes since a ceasefire agreement reached nearly a decade ago.

The decision was taken at a ‘flag meeting’ of officials of Punjab Rangers and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in Sialkot sector. “Incidents of unprovoked firing and shelling were discussed at the meeting. The Rangers lodged a strong protest with BSF officials over ceasefire violations by Indian border guards that caused loss of human lives and property,” a Pakistan military spokesman said.

Accountability court issues notice to Zardari

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: The accountability court of Islamabad issued on Tuesday a notice to former president Asif Ali Zardari on five corruption references, asking him to appear at the next hearing on Nov 26.

Former law minister Advocate Farooq H. Naek who appeared on behalf of Mr Zardari, received the notice.

Seven of a family slain in Dera Bugti

QUETTA, Oct 29: Armed men barged into house of a tribal elder and killed seven members of his family, including three women and two children, in Zain Koh area of Dera Bugti district on Tuesday.

A local administration official said the victims were sleeping at the time of the attack. Tribal elder Wadera Tharo Khan Bugti was not present in the house.

Wali Babar case transfer from Karachi sought

KARACHI, Oct 29: The Supreme Court of Pakistan was informed on Tuesday that the Sindh government had decided to transfer the case of murder of TV reporter Wali Khan Babar from Karachi to another place in the province.

Advocate General Khalid Javed Khan told a three-judge bench that the provincial authorities had moved an application to the chief justice of the Sindh High Court, seeking transfer of the trial from Karachi in view of threats to the lives of the investigators, witnesses and prosecution lawyers.

Ameer Hoti takes on father, rejects allegations against Asfandyar

PESHAWAR, Oct 29: It was out in the open on Tuesday what was long being speculated about; elder Hoti’s decision to contract another marriage has not only caused a split in Mardan House but could also trigger a political tug-of-war within the Awami National Party.

It was Ameer Haider Khan Hoti’s turn to defend his maternal uncle, Asfandyar Wali Khan, against a volley of charges levelled by his father, Azam Khan Hoti, against his brother-in-law, for selling out “the blood of 800 party workers to illuminate his hotels and plazas in Dubai and Malaysia”.

Senator Waqar Ahmed Khan, a former privatisation minister, is a member of the Khan political dynasty, which has included four senators serving at the same time.
