2,160 terrorists,67 civilians killed by drones

ISLAMABAD, Oct 30: The Ministry of Defence claimed on Wednesday that US drone attacks over the past five years had resulted in 67 non-combatant deaths, while 2,160 terrorists were killed by the much-criticised America’s weapon of choice against terrorism.

Importantly, the defence ministry said in a written statement in Senate that the collateral damage caused by the drone strikes had reduced to nil since 2012.

SC reproaches FBR, agencies over arms smuggling

KARACHI, Oct 30: Expressing dissatisfaction and annoyance over the performance of the Federal Board of Revenue, Pakistan Coast Guards and Maritime Security Agency in curbing the smuggling of arms into Karachi, the Supreme Court directed the chief federal law officer to submit a blueprint of the grand operation against the menace after holding a meeting of the interior ministry and federal government functionaries.

The directive was issued by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Gulzar Ahmed, which had taken up implementation of the court’s judgment in the Karachi law and order case at the Karachi registry of the Supreme Court.

Blast in South Waziristan leaves five soldiers dead

LADDAH, Oct 30: Five soldiers were killed and another was injured when a roadside bomb hit a military vehicle in South Waziristan on Wednesday.

Intelligence sources said the vehicle was hit by an IED (improvised explosive device) planted along a road in the Zateri area of Berwand in Sarwekai tehsil. Two soldiers were killed on the spot and three died later, they said.

Afridi seeks release on bail, retrial

PESHAWAR, Oct 30: A Fata (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) tribunal, hearing a review petition seeking Dr Shakil Afridi’s release on bail and a fresh trial to enable him to defend himself against the charge of supporting a banned organisation, sought on Wednesday record of the case.

The petition filed by Dr Afridi challenges an order of the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) commissioner setting aside his earlier conviction by an assistant political agent and remanding the case back to Khyber Agency’s political agent to assess again arguments of prosecution and defence under law and Rewaj (local custom). The order said that he should not be released on bail till the conclusion of the case.

Four killed in Quetta bomb attack

QUETTA, Oct 30: At least four people, including one Levies man, were killed and 18 others injured in a bomb attack here on Wednesday.

The blast took place on the crowded Zarghoon road known for scrap dealers, vehicle repair garages and carpet shops, during busy hours.

Iran not optimisticabout gas pipeline

TEHRAN, Oct 30: Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said on Wednesday that he had no hope of exporting gas to Pakistan because financing was not available to finish building a pipeline.

“Given the current conditions, we do not have hope for exporting gas to Pakistan,” Mr Zanganeh was quoted as saying by state news agency Irna.

New drone attack

MIRAMSHAH: Three suspected militants were killed when US drones targeted a house and a vehicle in the main bazaar of Miramshah, the administrative headquarters of North Waziristan Agency, in the small hours of Thursday.

Sources said that of the two missiles fired by the drone one hit the vehicle and the other landed into the house, reportedly owned by suspected militants. More casualties were feared.

Petrol price likely to be reduced

ISLAMABAD, Oct 30: The government is likely to reduce the price of petrol by more than Rs2 per litre but keep the rates of other petroleum products almost unchanged for November, according to sources.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) sent a summary to the petroleum ministry on Wednesday under which the price of petrol was proposed to be reduced by Rs2.48 a litre — from Rs113.25 to Rs110.77. The authorities had raised petrol price by Rs4.12 per litre on Oct 1.

Gas companies seek hefty raise in tariff

ISLAMABAD, Oct 30: Two state-owned gas utilities have requested the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to allow raise in their tariffs by 14 to 124 per cent. If approved, the new tariffs will be effective from January to June.

Copies of the petitions submitted by the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGCL) to Ogra, and obtained by DawnNews, reveal that the utilities sought increase in tariffs because of devaluation of the rupee and on account of hike in well-head price.

Eight die in accident

QUETTA, Oct 30: Eight people, among them a woman, died and 20 others suffered injuries when a coach plunged into a ditch near Qila Saifullah, 170km north of here, on Wednesday.

Levies officials said the coach, carrying around 40 passengers from Quetta to Peshawar, overturned when the driver lost control over the steering wheel before it fell into the ditch. Seven men and a woman died and 20 others received injuries.
