Suspect in US Capitol shooting confirmed dead: police

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - A woman with a 1-year-old girl led Secret Service and police on a harrowing car chase from the White House past the Capitol on Thursday, attempting to penetrate the security barriers at both national landmarks before she was shot to death, police said. The child survived.Tourists, congressional staff and even some senators watched as a caravan of law enforcement vehicles chased a black Infiniti with Connecticut license plates down Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol. House and Senate lawmakers, inside debating how to end a government shutdown, briefly shuttered their chambers as Capitol Police shut down the building.Im pretty confident this was not an accident, said Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier. Still, Capitol Police said there appeared to be no terrorist link. Authorities would not say whether the woman had been armed. The womans car at one point had been surrounded by police cars and she managed to escape, careening around a traffic circle and past the north side of the Capitol. Video shot by a TV camerman showed police pointing firearms at her car before she rammed a Secret Service vehicle and continued driving. Lanier said police shot and killed her a block northeast of the historic building. One Secret Service member and a 23-year veteran of the Capitol Police were injured. Officials said they are in good condition and expected to recover. This appears to be an isolated, singular matter, with, at this point, no nexus to terrorism, said Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine.Authorities did not immediately identify the driver of the car. Stamford, Connecticut, Mayor Michael Pavia said the FBI was executing a search warrant at a Stamford address in connection with the investigation. Police officers had cordoned off a condominium building and the surrounding neighborhood in the shoreline city. The pursuit began when the car sped onto a driveway leading to the White House, over a set of lowered barricades. When the driver couldnt get through a second barrier, she spun the car in the opposite direction, flipping a Secret Service officer over the hood of the car as she sped away, said B.J. Campbell, a tourist from Portland, Oregon. Then the chase began. The car was trying to get away. But it was going over the median and over the curb, said Matthew Coursen, who was watching from a cab window when the Infiniti sped by him. The car got boxed in and thats when I saw an officer of some kind draw his weapon and fire shots into the car.Police shot and killed the driver just outside the Hart Senate Office Building, where many senators have their offices. Dine said an officer took the child from the car to a hospital. She is in good condition under protective custody, officials said.A few senators between the Capitol and their office buildings said they heard the shots. We heard three, four, five pops, said Democratic Sen. Bob Casey. Police ordered Casey and nearby tourists to crouch behind a car for protection, then hustled everyone into the Capitol. The shooting comes two weeks after a mentally disturbed employee terrorized the Navy Yard with a shotgun, leaving 13 people dead including the gunman. Before the disruption, lawmakers had been trying to find common ground to end a government shutdown. The House had just finished approving legislation aimed at partly lifting the government shutdown by paying National Guard and Reserve members.Capitol Police on the plaza around the Capitol said they were working without pay as the result of the shutdown.

Frozen by shutdown, US warns of 'catastrophic' default

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama demanded an end to a three-day government shutdown he decried as a reckless farce, piling pressure on Republicans Thursday to climb down first on a budget impasse. The US Treasury meanwhile warned of catastrophic consequences if there is no deal within weeks to raise the US debt ceiling, and the IMF chief said finding a way out of that next crisis was mission critical.Obama traveled to the Washington suburbs to lambaste Republican House Speaker John Boehner, who emerged from a White House meeting late on Wednesday complaining that Obama would not negotiate with him.Take a vote, stop this farce and end this shutdown right now, Obama said during a fiery speech in the Maryland suburb of Rockville, which is home to many federal workers laid off in the shutdown.Branding the crisis a reckless Republican shutdown, Obama said that Boehner could reopen the government and get hundreds of thousands of people back to work in just five minutes by passing a temporary operating budget with no partisan strings attached.Speaker John Boehner wont even let the bill get a yes or no vote, because he doesnt want to anger the extremists in his party, Obama said. The government ran out of money on Monday, after Congress failed to pass a budget, forcing authorities to send all non-essential workers home and to close museums, monuments and national parks that are all popular with tourists. The Democratic-led Senate had turned back repeated Republican efforts to pass a budget while defunding or delaying Obamas health care law, which is a centerpiece of his political legacy and reviled by Tea Party conservatives. The talks at the White House between Obama and congressional leaders made no progress, and there is no sign that the dispute will be solved before dragging into a second week.Attention is increasingly turning to the next fight -- over Congresss responsibility to raise the $16.7 trillion US statutory borrowing limit. If there is no resolution before October 17, the government could begin running out of money to pay its bills and an unprecedented US debt default could result. But Republicans are again demanding concessions on Obamacare before voting to raise the debt ceiling, raising fears of unpredictable consequences, which the Treasury said in a report Thursday could plunge the United States into deep recession and rock global markets. In the event that a debt limit impasse were to lead to a default, it could have a catastrophic effect on not just financial markets but also on job creation, consumer spending and economic growth, the report said.Credit markets could freeze, the value of the dollar could plummet, US interest rates could skyrocket, the negative spillovers could reverberate around the world, and there might be a financial crisis and recession that could echo the events of 2008 or worse.International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said finding a way out of the debt limit dead end as soon as possible was mission critical. The New York Times reported Thursday that Boehner had privately told House Republicans that he understood the dangers of a default and was ready to pass a debt limit increase with the help of minority Democrats if necessary.Obama has refused to negotiate with Republicans over raising the debt ceiling, saying Congress is simply authorizing borrowing to pay bills it has already run up and that offering concessions would set a poor precedent for future presidents. In the minds of key players on Capitol Hill, the government shutdown and the debt ceiling fight have now merged into one massive political crisis. There was some talk among Republicans that Boehner may try to craft a face-saving way out by reviving a stalled drive for a grand bargain on debt and spending with Obama. But there is skepticism on the Democratic side that there is time to pull together a pact -- following repeated failed attempts in Obamas first term -- before the debt limit needs to be raised by October 17.The president was meanwhile wrestling with whether to cancel the rest of an already truncated Asia trip that would see him leave on Saturday for the APEC summit in Bali, Indonesia and the East Asia summit in Brunei.Going ahead would open him to charges of deserting Washington at a time of national crisis. But Obama is also keen to demonstrate that political problems at home should not be taken as a sign of weakness abroad, and wants to bolster his signature rebalancing of US military and diplomatic power to the dynamic Asian region.

Iraq: Deadly bomb blast hits soccer field

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - A bomb exploded near a soccer field while teenagers were playing south of Baghdad, the deadliest of three attacks that left eight dead in Iraq on Thursday, according to authorities. The blast struck in Madain, a mixed town of Sunni and Shiite Muslims about 25 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of the Iraqi capital. Police said at least five people were killed and 13 wounded in the attack.Violence has surged in Iraq in recent months, with the country weathering its deadliest bout of violence since it was pulling back from the brink of civil war in 2008. United Nations figures released this week showed that at least 979 people, most of them civilians, were killed in September alone. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Thursdays bombing. Much of the recent violence is the work of Iraqs al-Qaida arm, which frequently targets civilian areas in an effort to undermine the Shiite-led government.Soccer fields and other areas that are hard to protect have been increasingly targeted by militants in recent months. A similar bomb attack on a youth soccer game in Madain in late August left at least three dead.Elsewhere on Thursday, authorities said gunmen killed two police officers at checkpoint in the restive city of Mosul. Another person was shot dead at a drug store in the city, police said. Mosul is a former Sunni insurgent stronghold about 360 kilometers (220 miles) northwest of Baghdad that has been one of the hardest areas to tame since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.Hospital officials confirmed the casualty figures. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they werent authorized the release the information to journalists.

300 feared dead in Italy migrant boat disaster

Posted:

LAMPEDUSA (AFP) - Three hundred people were feared dead Thursday after a boat carrying up to 500 African asylum seekers caught fire and sank off Italian shores in the worst recent refugee disaster in the Mediterranean.Rescuers and local fishermen were overcome with emotion as they spoke of chaotic early morning scenes in the water, with a sea of heads as desperate refugees waved their arms and screamed. There were also stories of survival such as a young Eritrean woman thought dead and laid out with other corpses before medical personnel realised she was still breathing and revived her.A UN official blamed a repressive policy towards illegal immigrants for the tragedy, while UN chief Ban Ki-moon said he hoped the disaster would be a spur to action to protecting migrants rights, and improving the public perception of immigrants.Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano initially reported 93 victims, including three children and two pregnant women, but rescue divers later said they had identified at least 40 more bodies in and around the sunken wreck. With only 150 survivors plucked from the water more than 12 hours after the disaster, there were fears that the final toll could rise further to 300 or more people.Seeing the bodies of the children was a tragedy. We have run out of coffins, said Pietro Bartolo, a doctor. In many years of work here, I have never seen anything like this, he said.Lampedusa is one of the main entry points into the European Union for asylum-seekers crossing from north Africa or the eastern Mediterranean.Migreurop, a network of immigration charities, estimates 17,000 migrants have died at sea trying to reach Europe in the past 20 years, crossing on rickety fishing boats or dinghies.Survivors said they were from Eritrea and Somalia and had left from the Libyan port of Misrata. They told rescuers they set fire to a blanket on the boat to attract the attention of coastguards after their vessel began taking on water and passing fishing boats ignored them. The fire spread quickly, sowing panic on board, which caused the boat to flip over and sink, as people jumped into the sea to save themselves.Raffaele Colapinto, a local fisherman who was one of the first on the scene, said: We saw a sea of heads. We took as many as we could on board.Visibly shaken survivors in thermal blankets -- many of them bare-chested -- were seen on the dock and being treated at the hospital where personnel said many had swallowed gasoline and sea water.

They change all the time. Over the years that has been the case. You cant think too much about it.Your job is to win as many matches as possible and the ranking will follow the results that you make. The 26-year-old regained his composure in the third set, breaking Verdasco at the first attempt to race to a 3-0 lead, before breaking him again in the final game.Djokovic, who followed up wins in 2009 and 2010 with victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in last years final, faces Sam Querrey in the next round. The American dumped out the tournaments sixth seed Stanislas Warwinka 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) in their second-round match at Beijings National Tennis Centre.French fifth seed Richard Gasquet is also through to the last eight after he defeated Australias Bernard Tomic 7-6 (7/2), 6-4.Gasquet finished the match in style with a stunning ace to set up a quarter-final against David Ferrer, after the Spaniard overcame Marinko Matosevic 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.In the womens tournament, world number one Serena Williams claimed victory over Maria Kirilenko in two unconvincing sets, with the scores finishing 7-5, 7-5.The top seed was forced to summon extra strength at the end of each of her two sets as her Russian opponent became increasingly aggressive.Kirilenko was poised to claim the first set at 40-0 up with the score at 5-4 in her favour, but after missing three set points, Williams stepped up a gear to overturn the scoreline. The American was also forced to come from behind in the second set, with Kirilenko, a former winner in Beijing in 2005, leading 4-3. But Williams then broke Kirilenkos serve before closing in on victory in the third-round match. In the quarter-finals, Williams will play Danish number six seed Caroline Wozniacki who beat Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-1.She appeared to be uncomfortable at times on the court, but said she had no injuries.I have little aches everywhere, but Im feeling okay, Williams said.Czech Lucie Safarova ended Andrea Petkovics fairytale China Open with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7 (7/4), 7-6 (7-2) victory. The German had dumped out previous Beijing champions Svetlana Kuznetsova and Victoria Azarenka in the opening rounds.Polish third seed Agnieszka Radwanska powered through her third-round match, with a ruthless 6-0, 6-2 victory over Slovenian Polona Hercog.Seventh seed Angelique Kerber and eighth seed Jelena Jankovic also safety negotiated passages through to the last eight.Kerber, Germanys top ranked player, defeated Italys Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-4, while Jancovic disposed of Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in her third-round match, with the Serb taking both sets 6-0, 6-0.The China Open will reach its climax on October 6.

Tottenham perfect in Europa, Valencia bounce back

Posted:

RAMENSKOYE (AP) - Tottenham overcame cold conditions to maintain its billing as the Europa Leagues top contender thanks to a confident victory on Thursday, when a goalkeeping gaffe sparked Valencia to its first win.The Engloish Premier League club, which has spent heavily this offseason and sold Gareth Bale, wasnt the only team to make it two-for-two in wins: Genk, Fiorentina, Eintracht Frankfurt, Rubin Kazan, Sevilla, Swansea, Salzburg, and Ludogorets Razgrad are also perfect. Also, Sergio Floccari capped a frenetic contest with a flourish of goals as the Lazio substitute scored late for the Italian side to draw 3-3 at Trabzonspor, while Wigan picked up its first ever European victory.Jermaine Defoe and Nacer Chadli scored first-half goals to pace Tottenham to a 2-0 win against Anji Makhachkala in near freezing temperatures on the outskirts of Moscow, with the conflict in Dagestan forcing the once money-laden club away from home.Tottenham manager Andres Villas-Boas rotated his squad and the strong performance showed how deep the Portuguese managers bench is, although it was left to old hand Defoe to steer the visitors with his 21st goal in European competitions in the 34th minute moving him within one goal of Martin Chivers club record. While Anzi showed some resilience, the fall from grace for the cash-strapped club was evident as Tottenham kept a second straight clean sheet. The conditions were difficult but we had a great first half, where we created a lot, kept the ball well and deserved the lead, Villas-Boas said. A win is what we wanted, and it gives us the opportunity in the next games against Sheriff to ensure qualification. That is extremely important for us.Valencia enjoyed its own trip to Russia, bouncing back from a blowout loss to Swansea with a 2-0 win at Kuban Krasnodar.Paco Alcacer could just about walk his 73rd-minute goal into the net after Kuban goalkeeper Aleksandr Belenov misjudged a clearance well outside the area. Sofiane Feghouli also netted for the Spanish side to get back into the mix in Group A, which sees Swansea top after its 1-0 win over St-Gallen.Fiorentina also kept its place as one of the competition favorites after overcoming the absences of injured strikers Mario Gomez and Giuseppe Rossi to win 2-1 at Dnipro in the Ukraine.Massimo Ambrosinis run was picked out by Borja Valero for the former AC Milan player to score the 73rd-minute winner for Fiorentina, which hung on after David Pizarro was sent off with four minutes to play.Of 24 games on Thursday, only seven home teams managed victory with eight visiting teams earning all three points.Bordeaux fell 2-1 to visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv to leave the French club in trouble with zero points. Lyon, meanwhile, did only a little better in drawing 1-1 against Guimaraes.Dimitris Salpingidis has scored many clutch goals for Greece, and the stocky striker did it for his club PAOK on Thursday when an injury-time goal canceled out Jeffrey Gouweleeuws score in the 82nd as the Dutch club looked on course for three points. At Sevilla, Fallou Diagnes sending off in the 62nd led to Diego Perottis penalty score, and Sevilla held on to beat Freiburg 2-0 with Colombian striker Carlos Bacca adding the second in stoppage time.Sevillas second victory in the competition is twice as many as it has managed in seven league games this season. This victory will allow us to gain some confidence and improve, Sevilla coach Unai Emery said.Wigans 3-1 victory over Slovenian champion Maribor also came on its first ever home game in Europe.PSV Eindhoven bounced back from a home loss to Bulgarian minnow Ludogorets Razgrad with a 2-0 win at Chornomorets Odesa. Ludogorets Razgrad continued its encouraging start with a 3-0 victory against Dinamo Zagreb in Group B.

Rallying: Sebastien Ogier wins world rally title

Posted:

STRASBOURG (AFP) - French driver Sebastien Ogier clinched his first world rally title on Thursday, succeeding compatriot Sebastien Loeb who won the last nine championships.Ogier, in a Volkswagen, wrapped up the crown in the Power Stage on the Rally of Frances first day.He was assured of the title when Belgiums Thierry Neuville, the only man who could delay the celebrations, managed just second place on the stage which was won by Spains Dani Sordo in a Citroen.Ogier was third while Loeb, who has only raced in four rallies in his retirement season, was down in seventh spot. The way we have won this title is amazing, Ogier told www.wrc.com.In a year we have gone from zero to world champions and its such a great story. Its been a hard year with a lot of work, development, and effort from everyone. Its Volkswagens first year in WRC and we have not finished the season yet, but already we are champions.Neuville, in a Ford, needed to take the three points on offer to the winner of the Power Stage to keep his slim hopes of snatching the title alive. But he now stands 82 points behind Ogier with just 81 left to fight for in the last three races -- in France, Spain and Great Britain.Ogier, 29, and co-driver Julien Ingrassia, capped a fine first full season in the world rally championship for German manufacturer Volkswagen.Loeb, 39, had pledged to push Ogier all the way in France, but his challenge fizzled out on Thursday. It was a strange feeling to realise I was champion, but I still had to drive the stage. I was shaking a lot inside the car and I didnt expect that, added Ogier after seeing Neuville finish the stage just 0.7sec behind Sordo. But I was happy because it meant that I had a lot of emotion, and sometimes Im not emotional enough.Neuville, who had needed to win the last three rallies while also hoping that Ogier would finish without another point, remained upbeat. We knew already that we couldnt really win, so it doesnt change anything, said the Belgian.Whats important is that we were quicker here than Jari-Matti Latvala and I hope to get one or two more points this weekend. Can I win? I dont know, we will try, but we want second in the championship more, so points are the priority.Mikko Hirvonen is fourth overnight, with Andreas Mikkelsen fifth and Latvala sixth. Loeb is seventh, 2.9sec off the lead.

Uchimura wins record 4th world all-around title

Posted:

ANTWERP (AP) - Kohei Uchimura won a record fourth all-around world championship on Thursday, beating Japanese compatriot Ryohei Kato in a final that had a sense of inevitability about it from the start.Olympic champion Uchimura opened with the best floor exercise of the six top qualifiers and never looked back. He mixed his strength, poise and elegance on whichever apparatus he touched to set himself apart from all gymnasts in history and reinforce his reputation as the greatest ever.Fabian Hambuechen of Germany took bronze.Even though Uchimura already held the mens record for all-around world titles, he still shared it overall with retired womens great Svetlana Khorkina of Russia, who also won three.Uchimura also qualified for the weekend floor exercise, high bar and parallel bar finals. In a thrilling final for the other medals, American Sam Mikulak made a decisive error late in his high bar routine and instead of challenging for silver he ended up in fifth place. Hambuechen started out with a very weak pommel horse routine and an evening-long chase ended with a great floor exercise and bronze at the same time.Uchimura finished with 91.990 points, almost a massive two points ahead of Kato, who had 90.032. Hambuechen finished with 89.332.Britains Max Whitlock was fourth with 89.031 while Mikulak crashed to fifth with 88.548.For long though it looked like a fight between the two Japanese and Mikulak.A difference in style was immediately visible on the opening floor exercise. While Mikulak was smiling broadly, pumping his fists and acknowledging the crowd, Uchimura left the floor seemingly subdued, gave a small nod and a handshake to his coach. At the end though, after he landed from the high bar, Uchimura bowed, smiled broadly and also raised his fists.Uchimura has been untouchable since winning the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics and, if his performance at the worlds is any preview, he could be for many years to come.

Kobe Bryant goes to Germany for medical procedure

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kobe Bryant is heading to Germany to have a medical procedure unrelated to the torn Achilles tendon he sustained in April. The Los Angeles Lakers said on Thursday that Bryant is expected to return early next week.He went to Germany twice in 2011 for a procedure on his sore right knee and a sore left ankle that bothered him at the time. The Los Angeles Times on Thursday cited people with knowledge of the situation as saying that Bryant was going to Germany this time. He was having a knee procedure that involves removing blood from the affected area and spinning it in a centrifuge. Molecules that cause inflammatory responses are then removed to create a serum that is injected back into the affected area.Lakers coach Mike DAntoni told the Times that Bryants trip and ensuing procedure had been planned, and that the team had no concerns about it.The 35-year-old guard has been recovering from his Achilles injury and subsequent surgery. He did some shooting at training camp on Wednesday, but hasnt been cleared for running or jumping. The Lakers havent provided a timetable on Bryants return from the Achilles injury other than saying in April that he would be back in six to nine months. The overseas procedure wont affect his recovery time from the tendon injury. The Lakers open the season on Oct. 29 against the Clippers.

Oil falls as US gov't shutdown hits 3rd day

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil fell Thursday, along with stocks and metals, as the U.S. government shutdown dragged into a third day.U.S. benchmark oil contract for November delivery fell 79 cents to close at $103.31 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Markets have been weighing the impact of a partial shutdown of the U.S. government this week after a congressional dispute over funding for President Barack Obama's health care program. There are concerns that a prolonged halt to government activities could reduce demand for energy and hurt confidence in the economy.Economic indicators did not help, either. The Labor Department reported that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits remained near six-year lows, but while employers are have stopped laying off workers, the creation of new jobs has slowed in recent months. Also, a survey showed disappointing growth at U.S. service industries.U.S. stock markets were down across the board Thursday afternoon, while gold, silver and copper also fell.Brent, the benchmark for international crudes, slipped 19 cents to $109 in London.

Dollar sinks further as US shutdown passes 3rd day

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The dollar fell again Thursday against the euro and the yen as the US government shutdown ground through its third day with no end in sight.Worries mounted that the political paralysis in Washington would lead to the government being forced to default on its obligations. With it appearing that the issue of raising the country's borrowing limit would be rolled into the fight over the budget, the Treasury warned that not raising the debt limit by October 17 would force it to default on its obligations. That could have a catastrophic effect on not just financial markets but also on job creation, consumer spending and economic growth, the Treasury saidThe euro rose to $1.3618 at 2100 GMT, compared with $1.3580 late Wednesday. The dollar fell to 97.27 yen from 97.34 yen, while the euro rose to 132.49 yen from 132.21 yen.The darkening mood in US dollar markets contrasted with a slightly brighter picture for the euro, analysts said. The euro now finds itself in the enviable position of having a central bank that is cautiously confident in its region's economic recovery -- something the British pound has enjoyed the past several months, said Christopher Vecchio, currency analyst at DailyFX.That is something the US dollar has not enjoyed, as evidenced by the Federal Reserve refusing to taper QE3 in September. The British pound slipped back to $1.6155 from $1.6223, while the dollar slid to 0.8991 Swiss franc from 0.9026 franc.
