After more than five hours of intense politicking and closed-door meetings between leaders of the two sides when the assembly session started the treasury and opposition agreed on a draft which set Nov 20 deadline for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to develop national consensus on a line of action.

NA session: Leader of Opposition lets Imran take the lead

By Raja Asghar

ISLAMABAD, Nov 4: Still furious over a US drone strike that killed the chief of Pakistani Taliban three days ago, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan sought political support in the National Assembly on Monday to keep afloat what he called a sabotaged peace process with the insurgents, but a fire-eating Imran Khan said his party’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government would in any case retaliate by blocking Nato supplies to Afghanistan after Nov 20.

Chaudhry Nisar, speaking before a planned briefing to a special cabinet meeting, and Imran Khan, chief of the PTI that heads the coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, monopolised a brief sitting of the house on the opening day of its autumn session, which started late by over two hours in an apparent wait for the minister to return after watching an army exercise in Bahawalpur with the prime minister.

Karzai assails timing of TTP chief’s killing

ISLAMABAD, Nov 4: The Afghan president has criticised the timing of a US drone strike that killed the leader of Pakistani Taliban, Hakeemullah Mehsud, after an angry Islamabad expressed fears the death would undermine planned peace talks.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai told a US Congress delegation visiting Kabul that the drone strike “took place at an unsuitable time”, his office said in a statement released late on Sunday. The statement said Mr Karzai hoped the peace process, still at an embryonic stage, did not suffer as a result.

Delay in LG polls: SC terms ECP excuse dereliction of duty

By Nasir Iqbal

ISLAMABAD, Nov 4: The Supreme Court dismissed on Monday excuses offered by the Election Commission of Pakistan for delay in holding local government elections in Punjab and Sindh as “serious dereliction of duty”. “The ECP should be ready (to hold the LG elections) at the drop of a hat,” observed Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, one of the members of a three-judge bench, while referring to the perceived ECP’s reluctance and lack of preparedness to hold the elections.

After four days of deliberations, the ECP had on Oct 31 deferred elections in Punjab and Sindh, but announced that polling in Balochistan would be held on Dec 7.
