2 firms supplying army helicopters blacklisted

Nawaz firm on dialogue with Taliban

KARACHI, Nov 8: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday declared that notwithstanding the nomination of a more radical militant leader as the new TTP chief and the group’s announcement to abandon the talks process, his government would continue with the effort to establish a contact with the Taliban with the aim to achieve a lasting peace.

Avoiding any direct comments on the new TTP chief Mullah Fazlullah’s role in the bloody insurgency in Swat and rest of the Malakand region in the past, and his involvement in the recent killing of senior military officials, Mr Sharif said his prime goal was to work for a lasting peace in the region. “There’s been enough bloodshed, and some say more than forty thousand civilians and soldiers have been killed in these years of trouble, and therefore the only way out is to speed up the efforts for a permanent peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the rest of the country.

Jilani to take charge as US ambassadornext month

ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: Ambassador-designate to the United States Jalil Abbas Jilani would assume duties as head of Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in Washington next month.

“Mr Jalil Abbas Jilani will join his new assignment in December,” Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said on Friday.

People, public places not to be attacked, says TTP

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Nov 8: The Pakistani Taliban announced on Friday they would orchestrate a wave of revenge attacks against the government after naming hardline commander Mullah Fazlullah as their new leader.

The appointment of Fazlullah, known for his fierce Islamist views and rejection of peace talks, by the Taliban shura, a day earlier follows the killing of Hakeemullah Mehsud, the previous leader, in a US drone strike on Nov 1.

Indicators broadly on track: IMF

ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: The International Monetary Fund has expressed satisfaction over Pakistan’s economic progress and says budget deficit is broadly satisfactory and the government borrowing has been within the target.

Addressing a press conference along with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar here on Friday, the chief of the visiting IMF mission, Jeffery Franks, lauded the government’s performance and said various indicators were positive and even better than what had been agreed with the IMF.

Baloch dissidents asked to join mainstream politics

QUETTA, Nov 8: Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif has urged dissident Baloch nationalists to lay down their arms and join mainstream politics for bringing in prosperity and removing poverty and backwardness from Balochistan.

Talking to officials and media during a visit to Awaran on Friday, he said the government wanted to address the sense of deprivation of the Baloch who were as patriotic as other Pakistanis.

SC stays contempt trial of defence secretary

ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: A five-member bench of the Supreme Court stayed on Friday proceedings of a contempt trial by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry against Defence Secretary retired Lieutenant General Asif Yasin Malik till the completion of his intra-court appeal against the trial.

The restraining order was issued after Attorney General Muneer A. Malik said he could not prosecute the secretary because he had attended a meeting after which the secretary had submitted an undertaken before the smaller bench on July 2 to hold local government elections in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of 43 cantonment boards by Sept 15.

Sindh govt seeks extension in LG polls date

KARACHI, Nov 8: The Sindh government has appealed to the Supreme Court to allow it to hold local government elections on Dec 7 or any other date after Nov 27.

In an application filed at the court’s registry here on Friday, the advocate-general of Sindh stated that the provincial government was committed to assisting the Election Commission of Pakistan in holding the elections as early as possible, stood by its earlier submission and would honour the order of the apex court. But some serious problems have compelled the government to submit a request for allowing it to hold the polls by Dec 7 as scheduled for Balochistan and Punjab.

Swiss cases can’t be reopened, SC told

ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: Attorney General Muneer A. Malik told the Supreme Court on Friday that revival of graft cases worth $60 million against former president Asif Zardari was not possible because the government’s appeal was ‘hopelessly time-barred’ and the decision to close the case by the former attorney general of Geneva in 2008 had become final.

But a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, which had taken up the NRO implementation case, expressed disappointment over what it said was a violation of its order.

Hakeemullah was a killer, not martyr, says SIC

LAHORE, Nov 8: Thirty ulema associated with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) have said that Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan chief Hakeemullah Mehsud was the killer of innocent people, and not a martyr as is being called by some political parties.

“Since Hakeemullah Mehsud was responsible for martyrdom of 50,000 innocent people, declaring him a martyr is against Sunnah and Shariah,” a joint statement issued by the ulema said.The clerics termed the US drone attacks unlawful, immoral and inhuman. “Innocent people being killed in…drone attacks are martyrs.
