Drone protests isolating Pakistan: Sharif

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif sounded on Friday an implied warning to his political rivals engaged in anti-drone protests against pushing the country into isolation in the international arena and said his government desired peace and friendship with other countries.

Stepson of ex-governor held for murder

KARACHI: A man said to be a stepson of Zulfiqar Magsi, former governor of Balochistan, was arrested on Friday on charges of killing a security guard during a scuffle at a cinema in the Defence Housing Authority.

The scuffle broke out at around 3am and resulted in the murder of Asif Aziz, 35.

Talks only if Taliban lay down arms

LARKANA: While former president Asif Ali Zardari linked Talibanisation to poverty and urged the government to work for economic stability, the PPP’s patron-in-chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari vowed to wage ‘jihad’ against terrorists if they did not lay down arms.

Bilawal, who was addressing a large gathering held at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto on the sixth death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto, announced that his sisters Bakhtawar and Assefa would join active politics.

Areas around gas fields must get adequate supply: SC

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court ordered the Ministry of Petroleum on Friday to ensure supply of gas on priority to localities and villages situated within 5km around gas fields in accordance with a directive issued in 2003 by the then prime minister.

A verdict on environmental pollution and degradation, authored by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, instructed the director general of petroleum concessions to prepare a comprehensive account of the social welfare obligations, production bonuses and marine research fees due to each district where oil and gas exploration and production companies were operating.

China rejects criticism over nuclear cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong has dismissed as baseless reservations expressed by some countries on Beijing’s nuclear cooperation with Islamabad and said it was within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Talking to journalists on Friday, he said the objective of the Chinese cooperation with Pakistan in the nuclear field was to address Pakistan’s energy crisis. He said this cooperation would help boost Pakistan’s economy.

Three foreign soldiers die in Kabul suicide attack

KABUL: A suicide bomber attacked a military convoy on the eastern outskirts of Kabul on Friday, killing at least three foreign soldiers, police and the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for the group said in a message on his Twitter account: “A number of foreign forces were killed and wounded and many vehicles were also destroyed.”

Sri Lanka win last ODI

ABU DHABI: Dinesh Chandimal notched a half century for the first time in 11 months and carried Sri Lanka to a thrilling victory over Pakistan in the fifth one-day international on Friday.

Chandimal made an unbeaten 64 with just one four and a six as he put on a 40-run stand with No 10 batsman Ajantha Mendis to guide his team to 235-8 in 49.4 overs.

Data collection by NSA legal, rules US judge

WASHINGTON: A US federal judge in New York ruled on Friday that the massive collection of domestic telephone data by the US National Security Agency is lawful, rejecting the American Civil Liberties Union’s plea to declare it illegal.

A former NSA employee, Edward Snowden, blew the whistle on the programme when he leaked hundreds of documents earlier this year, showing how the agency was monitoring millions of telephone subscribers both at home and abroad.

Ex-minister killed in Beirut bombing

BEIRUT: Former Lebanese minister Mohamad Chatah was killed in a massive bomb blast on Friday.

The explosion also killed five other people and threw Lebanon, which has been drawn into the Syrian conflict, into further turmoil after a series of sectarian bombings over the past year.
