Two missing internees died in custody

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: In a startling disclosure, the acting Defence Secretary, retired Maj Gen Raja Arif Nazir, informed the country’s highest court on Monday about the death of two of the 35 detainees the court had ordered to be produced.

ECP wants LG polls held by Feb 28

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday vowed to complete the process of local government (LG) elections in the country by the end of February next year.

The commission at a meeting presided over by acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Nasirul Mulk decided to hold the elections in Sindh and Punjab on Jan 18 and 30, respectively, in line with a commitment given to the Supreme Court.

IJT students set bus on fire, paralyse Lahore

LAHORE, Dec 2: A face-off between the Punjab University administration and the Islami Jamiat Tulaba turned ugly on Monday as the latter’s activists resorted to violent protest, causing massive traffic jams for several hours on Lahore’s major roads as well as damaging and burning of public transport.

The students had taken to streets following a police clampdown on a hostel of the university early on Monday in a bid to get it vacated from male students.

Balochistan doctors to continue token boycott

QUETTA, Dec 2: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), Balochistan chapter, has announced continuing token boycott of out-patient departments in government hospitals till Dr Akbar Marri and Dr Din Muhammad, who went missing about three years ago, return.

The announcement was made by Dr Sultan Tareen, chief of the core committee of the PMA, at a press conference here on Monday.

Ulema of different sects devise code for harmony

LAHORE, Dec 2: Ulema of different schools of thought have unanimously agreed on a nine-point code of conduct (COC) to maintain sectarian harmony.

They signed the code after a detailed deliberation at a meeting presided over by Punjab Auqaf and Religious Affairs Minister Atta Maneka here on Monday. The meeting lasted about five hours.

Senate committee seeks IMF briefing

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: Dissatisfied with government’s explanation of its privatisation programme, a parliamentary committee called on Monday for a briefing by a team of the International Monetary Fund on its recent agreement with Pakistan.

Earlier, Privatisation Secretary Amjad Ali Khan had made a presentation at a meeting of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue and Privatisation and claimed that the privatisation programme was a home-grown agenda and not dictated by the IMF.

Govt clueless on NICL case probe order

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: After the Supreme Court order for investigation against the National Accountability Bureau chairman and the Federal Tax Ombudsman for their objectionable role in the NICL scam, the government is in a quandary over how to handle the situation.

“Since the two officials are holding constitutional positions, the government can neither replace nor remove them after their indictment by the apex court. Hence it is left with no option but to keep silent for the moment,” a government official told Dawn.

Gun-cum-cracker attack on media group’s offices

KARACHI, Dec 2: The offices of a media group came under attack here on Monday causing injury to a security guard and damaging few parked vehicles. It was the second attack on the group’s offices in the city’s Qayumabad area in four months.

Police and officials of the media house said that four men on two motorcycles first threw a cracker and than started firing from the adjacent KPT flyover.

Flour prices be made ‘affordable’, orders SC

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: The Supreme Court ordered the federal and provincial governments on Monday to take immediate measures to ensure the availability of flour and other foodstuff at affordable prices.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had taken up an application by Jamaat-i-Islami’s secretary general Liaquat Baloch, who was represented by Advocate Taufeeq Asif.
