Court reverses sacking of Nadra chief

ISLAMABAD, Dec 3: The government suffered humiliation on Tuesday when the Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended its abrupt decision regarding sacking of National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman Tariq Malik.

Foreigners among 15 killed in Karachi

KARACHI, Dec 3: Two foreigners were among 15 people killed in Karachi on Tuesday as violence reared its ugly head after a lull. Officials believed the spiral was a calculated move against the ongoing Rangers-led operation in the metropolis.

A Shia leader, Allama Deedar Ali Jalbani, and his guard were killed while in the evening three members of the Tableeghi Jamaat, including two Moroccans, were shot dead.

Three more missing persons traced, ministry informs SC

ISLAMABAD, Dec 3: The issue of enforced disappearance remained as murky as it has always been although the defence ministry came out on Tuesday with a little more information relating to the whereabouts of three of the 33 missing persons but appeared reluctant to produce the others despite a clear order of the Supreme Court.

Acting Defence Secretary retired Maj Gen Raja Arif Nazir informed a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry hearing a case relating to disappearance of one Yasin Shah that a ground check had led to the whereabouts of another three missing persons.

5 kidnapped Africans freed

QUETTA, Dec 3: A dramatic escape of two African citizens from captivity of kidnappers was followed by a police raid on a house in Gwadar on Tuesday, which resulted in the release of three more kidnapped Africans and the arrest of their three captors.

Police said the five African nationals were kidnapped a few months ago.

US not going away from Pak-Afghan region after ’14: official

WASHINGTON, Dec 3: The United States will not go away from the Pak-Afghan region after 2014 when it plans to withdraw most of its combat troops from Afghanistan, a senior US official said on Tuesday.

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal also stressed the need for improvement in Pakistan-India relations, which she said would not only bring stability to Afghanistan but would also help the entire region.

Altaf demands ban on Jamaat

KARACHI, Dec 3: Accusing the Jamaat-i-Islami of being in covert partnership with the Taliban, Al Qaeda and other anti-state outfits, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has called for an immediate ban on the JI and trial of its leaders for treason.

Speaking from London to a party workers’ convention held at the Lal Qila ground on Tuesday, he claimed that the JI was involved in violence and terrorism across the country along with the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

According to the Statistical Yearbook for Asia and the Pacific-2013 released by a UN commission on Tuesday, an estimated 60 per cent of capacity-addition efforts in future will be focused on mini-grids and off-grid connections in which renewable energy sources will play a vital role.

US special envoy meets Sartaj, Nisar

ISLAMABAD, Dec 3: The United States reassured Pakistan on Tuesday that working groups on economics and finance; and law-enforcement and counter-terrorism for the bilateral Strategic Dialogue would meet ahead of a ministerial meeting expected in March.

Adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security told the visiting US Special Envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, Mr James Dobbins, that it was important to convene the working groups on law-enforcement and counter-terrorism; and economy and finance before the next round of ministerial-level Strategic Dialogue.

JI lashes out at Muttahida

KARACHI, Dec 3: Dismissing all allegations levelled by Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain, the Jamaat-i-Islami said on Tuesday evening that those who torched the national flag at the Quaid’s mausoleum were demanding a ban on JI and the Islami Jamiat Tulaba.

Reacting to the MQM chief’s demand for imposition of a ban on the JI, a spokesman for the party said the “history of MQM was filled with terrorism and target killing”.
