Plea to suspend Musharraf’s summons rejected

ISLAMABAD: An attempt by former president retired General Pervez Musharraf to avoid his possible indictment on Jan 16 came to naught on Friday when the special court seized with his treason trial dismissed an application seeking suspension of his summons.

Nadra chairman resigns

ISLAMABAD: After a 42-day battle of nerves and resistance against what he called ‘indifferent’ attitude of the PML-N government, National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman Tariq Malik finally gave up and resigned on Friday.

“Having served my country and Nadra with honesty, integrity and distinction for more than five-and-a-half years, I believe it’s now in the best interest of the organisation to resign from my office,” the resignation said.

Gates says he never thought of Pakistan as an ally

Minister decries court order to reopen CNG stations

ISLAMABAD: Pointing its fingers at the Islamabad High Court for the ongoing gas crisis in the country, particularly in Punjab, the government on Friday said it would challenge in the Supreme Court an IHC judgment which had allowed reopening of CNG stations.

At a news conference, the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, said that there had been a serious gas crisis in the country over the past three weeks due to severe winter and resultant higher demand and a decision of the IHC to restore gas supply to CNG stations.

Balochistan govt mulls talks with militants

QUETTA: The Balochistan government will convene an all-party conference this month to debate proposals for holding talks with militants and extremists, the chief minister said on Friday.

“All political parties of Balochistan believe in democracy and want peace in the province. The provincial government and all leaders are serious in initiating peace negotiations with militants and extremists,” Dr Abdul Malik Baloch said during a conversation with a committee of political parties on introducing reforms in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).”

‘Taliban’ killings raise questions

KABUL/QUETTA: At least two Afghan Taliban commanders have been killed in recent weeks in Quetta, militants and police said, the latest in what officials in Afghanistan have described as a series of assassinations within the group.

The motive for the killings and the number of those killed are unclear, but the deaths could make peace between Afghanistan’s government and the militants more elusive as western troops prepare to leave.

70 workers in Khyber refuse to administer polio vaccine

LANDI KOTAL: As many as 70 ‘front-line health workers’ in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency have refused to take part in a three-day polio vaccination campaign beginning in the region on Saturday, citing security concerns.

The refusal came only two days after Agency Surgeon Dr Rehman announced end of a boycott and told reporters that the delayed campaign would be launched on Saturday in Jamrud and Landi Kotal.

Nuclear programme termed critical for defence

Gen Sharif made the comments during his first visit as army chief to Strategic Plans Division (SPD), which serves as the secretariat to the National Command Authority (NCA) — the apex body controlling the nuclear arsenal.
