Minister renews peace talks offer to TTP

ISLAMABAD: Disclosing that dialogue with some militant groups was in a crucial phase, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan renewed on Sunday the government’s offer of talks to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other groups so far averse to the process.

ANP man killed in terrorist attack

PESHAWAR/ALPURI: Gunmen shot dead an Awami National Party leader, his driver and a friend, on the outskirts of Peshawar on Sunday, hours after five people, three policemen among them, were killed in a bomb attack in Shangla district on a convoy of a senior PML-N leader who escaped unhurt.

Mian Mushtaq Ahmed, a former vice-president of the ANP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was going to Mashokhel village to offer Fateha for a relative when the gunmen opened fire at his car.

Khetran tribe’s chief arrested

QUETTA: MPA Sardar Abdul Rahman Khetran of the JUI-F was arrested on Sunday in connection with a case of torturing policemen.

According to sources close to the Khetran tribe’s chief and former minister, he courted arrest at the Barkhan police station.

Promotion anomalies dispirit prosecutors

LAHORE: Punjab demands high rate of conviction from its team of prosecutors but they are so dissatisfied with their defective service structure that many are leaving for greener pastures.

The lack of power to supervise the investigation of cases and to reject those not worthy of going to trial is a second major problem. They pursue cases that they know they will lose, wasting their and the court’s time, besides the taxpayers’ money.

Trade talks with India resume tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and India will resume secretary-level trade talks in New Delhi on Jan 14.

The meeting, being held after a gap of 16 months, will only maintain the ‘momentum of talks’ as part of the composite dialogue process, because substantive talks between the two countries will only be held after general elections in India. The term of Lok Sabha will end on May 31.
