Indefinite detention gets legal cover

ISLAMABAD: With the security situation worsening day by day, the government brought on Wednesday amendments through another ordinance to the controversial Protection of Pakistan Ordinance (PPO) that regulates detention for more than three months of suspects of terrorism and waging war against the country.

Sami quits peace process

NOWSHERA: Frustrated by what he claimed was lack of seriousness and response from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maulana Samiul Haq said on Wednesday he was detaching himself from the peace process with Pakistani militants.

In a statement, the Maulana from Akora Khattak said that he had agreed to initiate the peace process following his meeting with the prime minister last month to prevent the loss of innocent lives.

Blast kills 6 cops on polio duty, boy

CHARSADDA: Six policemen and a boy were killed and 10 people injured when an explosion took place near a police van carrying security personnel assigned to provide protection to polio vaccination teams in Sar Dheri Bazaar on Wednesday.

According to Charsadda DSP Raza Mohammad, the van was destroyed when an improvised explosive device attached to a bicycle went off at the Dak Khana Chowk early in the morning. Six policemen and a boy working in a workshop were killed and 10 others, including four policemen, were injured.

Six Levies men die protecting Spanish cyclist

QUETTA: Six personnel of Levies force, who were escorting a Spanish tourist, were killed in an ambush in the Koshkok area of Mastung district on Wednesday.

The tourist and four Levies personnel were injured in a later exchange of fire.

Media now in TTP crosshairs

KUNAR: After killing thousands of members of various state organs, as well as others, the violent Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has decided to extend its war by declaring the country’s media as “party” to the conflict.

For the first time since its inception in 2005, the banned militant outfit has not only issued a fatwa against the media but has also prepared a media hit-list — a copy of which is available with Dawn.

NAB to file references against two former PMs in Ogra case

ISLAMABAD: Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervez Ashraf, two former prime ministers belonging to the PPP, have been made accused in a reference relating to illegal appointment of former Oil & and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) chief Tauqeer Sadiq, and they will face the cases in an accountability court.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) approved on Wednesday the references about Rs82 billion Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) scam. The references may be filed in Islamabad on Thursday.

PTI to back army in anti-militant action

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said on Wednesday that his party would stand with the military during an operation against Taliban.

But he urged the government to take him and leaders of other major political parties into confidence if it had decided to a launch military operation in North Waziristan Agency (NWA).
