Zardari may appear before accountability courtBy Syed Irfan RazaISLAMABAD: Former president Asif Ali Zardari has decided to appear before the Accountability Court Islamabad on Jan 9 to face five references filed against him 17 years ago, according to sources in the PPP. They told Dawn on Tuesday that Mr Zardari’s lawyer and former law minister Farooq H. Naek had written letters to Secretary Interior Shahid Khan and Inspector General of Islamabad Police Sikandar Hayat seeking adequate security for the former president during hearing of the references. He demanded a bullet-proof vehicle and a bomb disposal squad for his client. | ||||||
Shujaat wants Article 6 amendedBy Amir WasimISLAMABAD: PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain submitted on Tuesday a constitution amendment bill to the Senate secretariat seeking to replace the words “high treason” in Article 6 with “offence against state”. The PML-Q chief submitted the bill a day after he had presented himself for trial along with retired Gen Pervez Musharraf, for supporting the imposition of emergency by him on Nov 3, 2007. | ||||||
Turkey sacks 350 police officers investigating graftANKARA: The Turkish government has fired 350 police officers in Ankara, local media reported on Tuesday, the latest twist in a vast corruption scandal that has ensnared key allies of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The officers were sacked by a government decree published at midnight and included chiefs of the financial crimes, anti-smuggling, cyber crime and organised crime units, the private Dogan News Agency reported. | ||||||
