13 die in second attack on a Peshawar cinema in 10 days

PESHAWAR: Hopes for a respite from terror attacks raised by peace talks between government and Taliban negotiators were dashed yet again when a triple grenade attack on a cinema left 13 people dead and 23 injured here on Tuesday.

Blasts may harm peace talks, TTP told

ISLAMABAD: Negotiators representing the government and the Taliban held an informal sitting here on Tuesday to prepare ground for what the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on National Affairs Irfan Siddiqui termed the second and more concrete phase of peace talks.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Siddiqui, who is coordinator of the government committee, said: “The two sides have expressed satisfaction over the progress so far made towards bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table and in the next round of talks more concrete steps will be discussed.”

Constable escorting polio team shot dead

DERA ISAMIL KHAN: A police constable escorting a polio team was killed and his colleague injured when gunmen opened fire on them in a village near here on Tuesday.

According to police, Hawaldar Tanveer and Constable Naseeruddin were returning after performing duty with the polio team in the village of Chamb when they came under fire. Naseeruddin died on the spot while Tanveer suffered injuries.

Indian minister to skip Lahore trade show

ISLAMABAD: Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma is unlikely to come to inaugurate an exhibition in Lahore on Friday because mistrust between the two countries over normalising bilateral trade has deepened.

Mr Sharma was scheduled to arrive in Pakistan on Thursday for inauguration of ‘the India Show’, which is being organised by the Indian Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Zardari talks to Altaf after MQM’s ultimatum

KARACHI: Following an ultimatum given to Sindh authorities by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) of taking a ‘tough strategy’ against what the party claimed extrajudicial killings of its workers, former president Asif Ali Zardari and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Tuesday spoke to MQM supremo Altaf Hussain over phone and assured him that his party’s grievances would be addressed.

Earlier in the day, the MQM’s coordination committee held a hard-hitting press conference in which it condemned the killing of a party worker, Mohammad Adil, who died in the small hours of Tuesday at a hospital.

US releases $352m under CSF; urged to clear dues

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has received $352 million from the United States under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF) for the January-March quarter of 2013.

During a meeting with US Ambassador Richard Olson here on Tuesday, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar urged Washington to disburse the remaining instalments for last year at the earliest.

Other options to be used if peace talks fail: minister

ISLAMABAD: The government on Tuesday informed the Senate that it had other options on the table, but those would be used only if talks with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) failed.

“The government is sincere in its efforts. There is no weakness. Dialogue is the first option and the government will only go for other options once this option is fully exhausted,” said State Minister for Interior Balighur Rehman while winding up the debate on the law and order situation in the country.

TTP has 500 women suicide bombers: Aziz

ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan has as many as 500 female suicide bombers ready to act, Maulana Abdul Aziz, one of three negotiators representing the TTP, said in an interview with Bloomberg News. The TTP sees no urgency to reach an agreement with the government, the Maulana said at his Islamabad seminary.

“You should know that at the moment they have at least 400 to 500 female suicide bombers in Waziristan and other tribal areas,” said Maulana Aziz, referring to the TTP.
