Trade linked to resumption of composite dialogue: minister

Peace talks back to square one

ISLAMABAD: Peace negotiators representing the government and Taliban looked utterly helpless when they met on Friday, a day after the deadly bomb attack on a police van claimed by the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Both sides condemned Thursday’s attack in Karachi, which left 13 police commandos dead, and called upon the TTP to stop such attacks as they were hampering peace efforts.

Rangers officer escapes suicide attack

KARACHI: A day after a militant attack in which 13 police commandos were killed, a senior officer of the Rangers was attacked by a suicide bomber in the city’s Qayumabad area on Friday morning. The officer, his guard and driver remained unhurt.

According to Korangi SP Usman Ijaz Bajwa, the Rangers sector commander was going from the Defence Housing Authority to his office in the Nursery area when the suicide bomber aged about 20 years blew himself up in front of the vehicle. The vehicle’s front portion was affected by the blast and its engine was damaged.

Three more officials, tribal elder kidnapped

QUETTA: Three government officials and a tribal elder sent by the authorities to negotiate release of two senior officials kidnapped in Tump area of Kech district on Thursday were themselves taken away by militants on Friday.

The banned Baloch Liberation Front claimed responsibility for both the kidnapping incidents.

‘Organised network’ of Al Qaeda found in Karachi

KARACHI: Police investigators claimed on Friday to have spotted an ‘organised network’ of Al Qaeda in Karachi with multiple wings whose members ranged from highly educated individuals to IT professionals and technologists who worked on ‘bright students as potential members’.

The disclosure, which added to the worries of the people of Karachi reeling from the recent surge in incidents of terrorism across the city, was made following arrest of three young Al Qaeda suspects. Their interrogation led police to conclude that educational institutions had become a prime target of the globally-declared terrorist organisation for recruiting young graduates.”

Govt rejects PTI chief’s remarks

ISLAMABAD: The government on Friday dismissed as baseless Imran Khan’s remarks about the capacity of the Pakistan Army to fight terrorism.

The opposition in the upper house of parliament had been seeking explanation from the government for three days over the PTI leader’s claim that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had quoted the army chief in his presence as saying that the chances of success of a military operation against militants were less than 40 per cent.

15 die in Xinjiang terrorist attack

BEIJING: A total of 15 people died in an “attack” in China’s Xinjiang region on Friday, with eight “terrorists” shot dead by police and three blowing themselves up, having killed four people, authorities said.

The incident in Aksu prefecture is the latest violence in the restive region home to mostly Muslim ethnic Uighurs.
