Musharraf finally appears in court, but not charged

ISLAMABAD: Former military ruler retired Gen Pervez Musharraf finally appeared before the Special Court on Tuesday and was allowed to ‘escape’ once again without treason charges having been framed against him.

Army major killed in clash with militants

PESHAWAR: In another serious setback to efforts aimed at forging reconciliation between the government and the outlawed Taliban, an officer of Pakistan Army was killed in an encounter with militants in Bazargai area of Frontier Region (FR) Peshawar on Tuesday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The incident comes at a time when negotiations between a four-member committee representing the government and a team representing the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan have already hit a dead-end following the killing of 23 Frontier Corps soldiers by militants in Mohmand Agency.

Ball is back in PM’s court

ISLAMABAD: Talks or no talks with the Taliban, the ball is back in the prime minister’s court as the four-member committee constituted by him to hold peace negotiations with the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has expressed its inability to carry forward the process in the wake of continued deadly attacks by militants.

The committee members — Irfan Siddiqui, Major Amir, Rustam Shah Mohmand and Rahimullah Yousufzai — first held an internal meeting on Tuesday and then conveyed their decision to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at his office.

Pakistan warns Iran against sending troops

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan cautioned Iran on Tuesday against sending troops across the (Pak-Iran) border for recovering its kidnapped border guards.

“The Iranian forces have no authority to cross our borders in violation of the international law,” a measured but stern Foreign Office statement said, adding that borders must be respected.

TTP claims it is serious about talks

MIRAMSHAH: The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan has claimed that it is serious about peace talks with the government.

Talking to journalists on phone from an unspecified location, TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said the Taliban leadership was in constant contact with all factions on the issue of ceasefire and a decision in this respect would be taken soon.

Accords signed for power supply from C. Asia

WASHINGTON: Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan signed a series of agreements with the World Bank on Tuesday to facilitate the transfer of surplus electricity from Central to South Asia.

Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Mohammed Asif signed the agreements on Pakistan’s behalf.
