Special Court rejects Musharraf’s plea for military trial

ISLAMABAD: The Special Court rejected on Friday a plea of former president retired General Pervez Musharraf for transferring his high treason trial to a military court and decided to indict him on March 11.

The three-judge court headed by Justice Faisal Arab of the Sindh High Court ruled that the application of the former military ruler “seeking transfer of the complaint (high treason) from this court to the court martial under the Pakistan Army Act (PAA) is dismissed”

Joint panel formed to recover Iranian guards

QUETTA: The Pakistan-Iran joint border commission has stressed the need for coordinated efforts against cross-border terrorism and formed a committee to prepare a strategy for the recovery of kidnapped Iranian guards.

This was said by Balochistan Chief Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Mohammad and the Deputy Governor of the Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan, Ali Asghar Mir Shikari, at a press conference here on Friday after the conclusion of a three-day meeting of the commission.

Forces capable of countering threats: COAS

PESHAWAR: Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif said on Friday that the country’s armed forces were fully capable of countering any internal and external threat.

“Let there be no doubt that Pakistan armed forces are battle-hardened and fully capable to counter any internal or external threat posed to the integrity and sovereignty of our beloved country,” Gen Sharif said during a visit to the Frontier Corps Headquarters at Bala Hisar Fort here.

New generation telecom licence auction next month

ISLAMABAD: The government decided on Friday to auction next month six fresh cellular telecommunication licences, five of them in the next generation technology, for 15 years. The auction is estimated to yield a minimum of $1.6 billion.

“The prime minister has approved the final recommendations on auction process of third and fourth generation of telecom licences under which the bidding will be held by the end of March,” Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said at a news conference.

Sethi sends notice to Imran over poll fraud allegation

ISLAMABAD: Former caretaker chief minister of Punjab Najam Sethi has decided to take Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan to court over the allegation that the former had committed election fraud in favour of the ruling PML-N.

Talking to Dawn on Friday, the head of PTI’s central media cell, Chaudhry Rizwan, confirmed that the party had received the defamation notice delivered on behalf of Mr Sethi. He said the party’s legal team was going through the notice and a formal response would be given after the expected return of Mr Khan from London on Sunday.

Raja faces two more RPP scam references

Mr Ashraf already faces a reference in the RPP scandal.
