New security policy sets ambitious targets

ISLAMABAD: The government has set some tough targets for itself in the new security policy.It intends to integrate mosques and madressahs to the national education system in one year, undertake legal reforms, construct a national narrative against extremist mindset in six months, improve intelligence-sharing and strengthen coordination between the Inter-Services Intelligence and civilian agencies.

Afghan official shot dead in Chaman

QUETTA: An Afghan government official and two other people were gunned down in separate incidents in Balochistan on Thursday.

Police sources said two unidentified men on a motorcycle opened fire on Sardar Mohammad, a customs officer in Afghanistan, in Roghani road area of Chaman. He received multiple bullets injuries and was rushed to a hospital, but died before getting any medical treatment. His body was handed over to Afghan officials after an autopsy.

Pak-China defence cooperation discussed

He was speaking to his Pakistani counterpart Khawaja Asif at the defence ministry.

PTI ends Nato supply route blockade

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has decided to end its nearly four-month blockade of Nato supplies to Afghanistan.

A meeting of the PTI’s core committee held here under the chairmanship of Imran Khan on Thursday discussed a recent judgment of the Peshawar High Court which declared the stopping and checking of vehicles carrying goods to Afghanistan illegal.

FO spokesperson hits out at Syria policy critics

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office spokesperson lost patience on Thursday with critics of what is being perceived as a shift in Syria policy and derided them as foreign policy novices.

“Pakistan’s position on Syria has been explained ad nauseam. If still there is no understanding, I would say the criticism, in the first place, is motivated or there will be questions about the intelligence level of those who are indulging in this debate,” FO spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said at the weekly media briefing.

KHEWRA MINES: WORTH THEIR SALT

MANY of us have visited the Khewra salt mines to see monuments made of rock salt. We have also bought rock salt souvenirs sold on the outskirts of the mines. But little else is known about this location famous for its pink salt. The salt is mined from a mountain range of almost 400 kilometres. The Khewra salt mines are believed to be the second largest of their kind in the world.

When one enters the mines, the tracks stop after a few hundred metres and a signboard indicates the tourist area on the left. But if we take a right, we come across the working area.

Ogra recommends cut in oil prices

ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) on Thursday recommended up to Rs2.72 per litre reduction in prices of petroleum products in view of declining prices in the international market and a rather stable rupee.

In a working paper sent to the petroleum and finance ministries, Ogra recommended Rs2.72 per litre reduction in the price of petrol. The existing rate of petrol is Rs112.76 per litre.

NASA says 715 planets discovered

WASHINGTON: The Earth’s galaxy is looking far more crowded. NASA has confirmed 715 newly discovered planets outside the solar system.

Douglas Hudgins of NASA termed Wednesday’s announcement a major step towards the planet-hunting Kepler telescope’s ultimate goal: ‘finding Earth 2’.
