JUI-F stresses importance of Jirga mechanism

FAISALABAD: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has expressed reservations over the nomination of a committee by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for holding talks with the government and the procedure the government is following to initiate the dialogue.

Nisar hails formation of Taliban team

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan welcomed on Sunday the announcement of a negotiating team by Taliban, but at the same time indicated that there were hurdles which needed to be removed before peace talks could be started.

“The announcement of a negotiators’ committee from the other side is a positive development. However, there are still some issues which require explanation. As soon as a decision is made, the process of negotiations will immediately begin,” he said in a statement.

Thousands of Bugtis waiting to return home

QUETTA: Thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs), women and children among them, who had migrated to Sindh and Punjab because of a military operation in Dera Bugti nine years ago, are waiting at Doli checkpost and Kashmore for the government permission to return home.

Having started their journey back home on Jan 17, they were stopped at Kashmore the next day. Security officials said they could move ahead only after getting themselves registered.

Twin blasts in Peshawar cinema claim four lives

PESHAWAR: Two explosions inside a cinema here on Sunday night left four people killed and 31 injured.

According to police officials, two hand grenades were lobbed inside the hall of Picture House, one of the oldest cinemas in Peshawar situated on the Cinema Road near Qissa Khwani Bazaar, during the screening of a Pashto film.

TTP offers security to negotiators

PESHAWAR: The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has offered to provide security and protection to members of the negotiating committees in areas under its control.

In a statement issued to the media here on Sunday, TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said the political Shura of Taliban would guide the five-member committee nominated by it. He said that Taliban sincerely wanted peace talks with the government.

Muslim cleric and Christian pastor slain in Nigeria

KANO (Nigeria): Nigeria’s Boko Haram was suspected on Sunday of killing a Muslim cleric who had criticised the extremist group, and of shooting dead a Christian preacher, in the latest violence to hit northern Nigeria.

The deaths came after seven people were killed by a roadside bomb in a border area of the remote northeast, which has seen mounting militant activity in recent months.

Race for Afghan presidency begins

KABUL: Afghanistan’s presidential candidates held rallies in Kabul on Sunday at the start of a campaign to elect Hamid Karzai’s successor, as the killing of a front-runner’s aides highlighted the security threat to the poll.

Gunmen shot dead two members of former foreign minister Abdullah Abdul-lah’s team in the western city of Herat on Saturday, dealing an early blow to hopes of a peaceful campaign as the country prepares for its first democratic transfer of power.
