PTI, JUI-F retreat draws sarcastic remarks in NA

By Raja Asghar

ISLAMABAD: The planned dialogue between the government and Taliban seemed to have received a setback on Monday as two key parties told the National Assembly they were not joining a militant group’s panel of negotiators.

After some embarrassing sarcasm from both friends and foes, the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the government-allied Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl gave different reasons for their dissociation two days after the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) named PTI chairman Imran Khan and a JUI-F figure on its five-man panel to negotiate with a four-member government panel.

Future energy needs a concern

Dawn Report

KARACHI/LAHORE: It has been estimated that by 2030 the world will need 40 to 50 per cent more energy, water and food in tandem with rising demand and increased populations, according to a series of surveys conducted recently.

Tremendous stress will be placed on these vital resources as energy is used to move and treat water; water is required to produce energy and both energy and water are required for the production of food.

MIRAMSHAH: The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan regretted on Monday the decision of PTI chief Imran Khan and JUI-F leader Mufti Kifayatullah to disassociate themselves from the five-member committee it had nominated for talks with the government.

TTP spokesman Sahidullah Shahid told Dawn on phone from an unspecified location: “We regret the decision of PTI and JUI leaderships about distancing their representatives from the proposed peace talks.”

Loan Scheme Hit By Snags

By Nabeel Anwar Dhakku

WHILE submitting the application form at the main branch of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in Chakwal city, Shamrez Khan’s eyes sparkle. The 30-year-old man is among the lucky ones who have successfully grappled with the process of preparing their documents for seeking a loan under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Youth Business Loan Scheme.

Shamrez runs a tiny shoe shop in Kariala village, some 12 kilometres to the south-east of Chakwal. He wants to extend it with a Rs300,000 investment. “I’m living hand to mouth and my daily income is not satisfactory,” he told Dawn at the NBP’s main branch on Bhoun Road. “I’m seeking a loan to expand my business.”
