The reader of the court of slain additional district and sessions judge Rafaqat Ahmed Khan Awan accused police of coercing him into giving evidence corroborating the claim of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali that the judge had been killed by the bullets accidentally fired by his own guard. | ||||||||||||||
Rupee maintains rise against dollarBy Shahid IqbalKARACHI: The dollar weakened further on Monday, losing within a week 5 per cent of its value against the rupee. It traded at Rs100.90 before closing at Rs101.12 in the inter-bank and at Rs101 in the open market. Exporters, dollar holders and speculators are panicking over the situation and messages are being sent to the ministry of finance to contain the trend, but currency dealers say the greenback is likely to fall below Rs100 over the next few days. | ||||||||||||||

Musharraf for trial of aides as wellBy Malik AsadISLAMABAD: Former president retired General Pervez Musharraf has sought high treason trial of civilian leaders and military officials who allegedly abetted in the imposition of state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007. In an application filed in the special court seized with his treason trial on Monday, Gen Musharraf requested the three-member court to summon all those who had been consulted by him before the imposition of emergency. According to the proclamation issued about the emergency, Gen Musharraf imposed emergency after consultation with the then prime minister, governors of four provinces, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee, chiefs of armed forces, vice chief of army staff and corps commanders. | ||||||||||||||

As soon as a man got out of an ambulance carrying his five-year-old son, a group of cameramen and reporters formed a semi-circle around him, their devices clicking away, taking multiple shots of him and his semi-conscious child. Right beside the emergency entranceway, a member of the provincial assembly was busy providing sought-after sound bites to a TV crew, while in the parking lot next to it, the personal secretary of a former MPA was counting the media men sitting inside the van before embarking on a trip to a nearby goth to tour the famine-struck areas. The entranceway of the hospital was jam-packed with the multicoloured mobile vans of various television channels, with reporters running after every other patient who made his or her way to the hospital’s outpatient department. | ||||||||||||||
