12-hour power cuts are back

LAHORE: If summer comes, power cuts cannot be far behind. Twelve-hour loadshedding came back to torment the country on Saturday as the mercury hovered around the thirties in southern Punjab and Sindh while plants with a combined capacity of over 3,000MW remained idle for one reason or the other.

Lanka win Asia Cup

DHAKA: Lahiru Thirimanne struck a well-paced 101 as Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final of the Asia Cup on Saturday.

Thirimanne added 156 for the third wicket with Mahela Jayawardene (75) as Sri Lanka scored 261-5 in 46.2 overs after pace bowler Lasith Malinga’s haul of 5-56 had helped restrict Pakistan to 260-5.

40 development projects in limbo

ISLAMABAD: About 40 major infrastructure projects of the federal government worth more than Rs847 billion have hit snags because of a host of political, financial and managerial shortcomings, causing huge cost overruns.

“These 40 projects have officially been described as problematic and slow-moving,” a senior government official told Dawn, showing a report prepared by the Planning Commission. In some cases, the project costs have increased by more than 400 per cent, he said.

India benefits as water issues ignored

ISLAMABAD: The PML-N government has virtually turned a blind eye to India’s constructions on the western rivers.

Dawn has learnt that India has started work on 38 projects on the Jhelum, Chenab and Indus rivers, ignoring Pakistan’s rights over the river water guaranteed by the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty.

Army plans major purchases next year

ISLAMABAD: In an indication that major defence purchases are being planned for next financial year, the Pakistan Army has sought an increase in the development component of allocation it gets in the country’s annual budget.

The case for increase in the army’s development budget was made during a rare visit by the finance minister to the General Headquarters for consultations with the army chief on the next year’s defence budget.

Bomb kills Afghan district governor

JALALABAD: A magnetic bomb attached to a district governor’s vehicle exploded in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing the governor and his bodyguard, provincial authorities said.

Afghan refugees not to vote in presidential polls

QUETTA: As Afghanistan goes to the polls to elect a new president on April 5, Afghan refugees living in Pakistan will not get the opportunity to cast their vote.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), no arrangements have so far been made for the Afghans in Pakistan to cast their vote in the Afghan presidential election.
