Over a million flee South Sudan conflict: UN

Posted:

JUBA (AFP) - Over a million people in South Sudan have been forced from their homes during more than three months of ongoing fighting, with conditions continuing to worsen, the UN has warned. In the 100 days since the start of the con?ict in South Sudan, over one million people have ?ed their homes, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a report late Friday.Over 800,000 are displaced inside South Sudan, while almost 255,000 have ?ed as refugees to neighbouring countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan, the UN says.Violence erupted in South Sudan on December 15 between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and fighters loosely allied to former vice president Riek Machar.A ceasefire between government and rebels inked in January is in tatters with fighting ongoing.Fighting between government and opposition forces has continued, especially in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile state, where towns and rural areas have been ravaged by the violence, the OCHA report added. The conflict has caused a serious deterioration in the food security situation with some 3.7 million people at high risk, it read.Peace talks in the Ethiopia capital have made little if any progress, with the two sides spending time squabbling in luxury hotels over who can attend negotiations.Tens of thousands of civilians are sheltering inside UN peacekeeper bases fearing revenge attacks, crammed into tiny areas in increasingly squalid conditions due to heavy rains. The UN estimates five million people are in need of aid, with vast swathes of the countryside increasingly difficult to reach by road due to seasonal heavy rains.Huge warehouses of food aid stored for the rainy season before fighting broke out have been looted. The UN World Food Programme has therefore begun delivering food and medical supplies by costly air drops. In places without an effective runway the food sacks are simply dropped out of the back of giant cargo air planes.UN children's agency chief in South Sudan Jonathan Veitch warned on Friday of worrying signs of malnutrition and disease outbreaks and that every effort had to made to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.Chris Nikoi, head of WFP in South Sudan, said he was enormously concerned that things could get worse.

Formula 1: Hamilton beats Vettel to Malaysian pole

Posted:

SEPANG (Agencies) - Former world champion Lewis Hamilton avoided crashes and shrugged off a torrential downpour to claim a British record-equalling 33rd pole position at a thrilling Malaysian Grand Prix qualifier. In a session that had nearly an hours rain delay, and was twice suspended for crashes on the slippery Sepang circuit, the Mercedes driver came out on top ahead of surging world title-holder Sebastian Vettel.Hamiltons team-mate Nico Rosberg, who won the season-opener in Australia, will start Sundays race from third with Ferraris Fernando Alonso fourth after surviving a collision with Daniil Kvyat.Vettels new Red Bull partner Daniel Ricciardo will start from fifth ahead of Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Hulkenberg, who impressively placed his Force India sixth.Williams driver Valtteri Bottas was given a three-place grid penalty for obstructing Ricciardo in Q2, and will start from 18th. But Alonso and Kvyat both escaped sanction after an inquiry into their crash.Hamilton was thankful to grab his second straight pole this year, and the 33rd of his career - equalling Jim Clarks British record - with a lap time of 1min 59.431sec, 0.055 quicker than Vettel.Today was just incredible how much it rained before and then during the session, it was very, very tricky for everyone, the 2008 world champion said.Particularly at the end, it was almost impossible to see. I tried to do my last lap but I couldnt see a thing. However, the more significant result could be Vettels second place as the four-time defending world champion, who like Hamilton retired in Australia, showed signs of life after severe early-season problems.Im very happy because we had a bad winter but the teams fired up, the guys are pushing still flat-out, Vettel said, adding: I think we always have a chance to beat everybody, thats why were here.

Golf: Australia's Bowditch claims Texas Open lead

Posted:

SAN ANTONIO (AFP) - Australian Steven Bowditch did enough before a double-bogey on his final hole to seize the lead in the second round of the US PGA Tour's Texas Open.Bowditch fired a five-under-par 67 that included five birdies and an eagle at the par-four 12th hole -- where he holed out with a wedge from 83 yards. His eight-under total of 136 gave him a one-shot lead over American Chad Collins, who carded a 66, and rookie Andrew Loupe who posted a second-round 70 for 137.Loupe had been among the players who had to return to complete the first round on Friday morning, taking a one-shot lead with a 67.It was a further two strokes back to Americans Cameron Beckman and Pat Perez on 139. Beckman posted a 70 and Perez a 71.Bowditch took his late stumble in stride. It's going to happen out here, he said, noting that it was balanced out by his eagle. My wedge shots have been pretty good, he said. I was trying to hit it a little past the pin and hope it came back to a reasonable distance and got lucky, it went in.Bowditch, 30, has made the cut in seven of his 12 US PGA Tour starts this season, a share of 19th place at Pebble Beach is his only top 25 finish of the season. My putter has really been a big problem this year, he said. I'm not making many putts at the moment, so most of my birdies have been sort of coming inside of six or five feet.I've hit a lot of good wedge shots. I made a couple of good par saves on my back nine this afternoon, but all in all it's been more of hitting my approach shots pretty close.Phil Mickelson birdied his final hole, the par-five 18th, to complete a 70 and make the cut on the number at three-over 147.Mickelson knew he needed birdie to have a chance to make the cut and went for the green with his second shot. His ball stuck on the edge of the creek guarding the right of the green and he took his next shot with his left foot in the water, pitching to five feet and making the putt.Mickelson, playing the Texas Open for the first time since 1992 in a bid to get more rounds in before the Masters next month, said he was seeing some encouraging signs as the year's first major approaches. It's important for me that mentally I get more into the round kind of like I did today, whereas yesterday I was very sloppy, he said. I actually really like the way I'm driving the ball, he said. I'm hitting the ball hard, I'm hitting it high, my speed is back, my back feels great, my body feels great, and I'm able to hit the ball hard again.

Refreshed Pakistan eye World T20 semi-finals

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Pakistan will return to World Twenty20 action after a weeks break on Sunday charged up to make a move for the semi-finals by winning their two remaining games in the Super-10 round in Dhaka.Mohammad Hafeezs men, who lost their opening group two match to India by seven wickets on March 21, bounced back to beat Australia by 16 runs last Sunday and remain in contention.Pakistan must defeat hosts Bangladesh on Sunday and the defending champions West Indies on Tuesday to join India in the semi-finals from the group. The picture is clear, Hafeez said on Saturday. We have to win both games to make sure we are in the last four. There is no scope to make mistakes now and we are eager to get back to the field.Hafeez said the team used the break to iron out shortcomings ahead of the crucial matches at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium. We have trained and worked hard for the last six days, he said. The management and the coaches worked on our weaknesses. The build-up for the crucial stage has gone off very well.Hafeez praised arch-rivals India, who won three consecutive games to ensure their place in the knock-out round even before their last league match against Australia on Sunday.India have played very good cricket so far in the tournament, the Pakistan skipper said. Its good they are through, so the rest of the teams know what it will take to advance.Expectations should always remain high. Our target is not just the semi-finals, but also to win the tournament. I think we are destined to do well.Pakistan, champions in 2009, have an impressive record in World Twenty20, making the semi-finals of all four editions so far.Pakistans batting, which faltered against India to be restricted to 130-7, came back strongly against Australia where they piled up 191-5 following Umar Akmals scintillating 94 off 54 balls.Hafeez said Akmal, who strained a hamstring during that innings, was fit to play on Sunday. The break came as a blessing in disguise, Hafeez said. It gave time to the physios to work on him. He has been training for the last two days.Hafeez knows the tougher game will be against the West Indies on Tuesday, but refused to take Bangladesh lightly even though the hosts have lost both matches so far.No team is easy to beat in T20 cricket, he said. You have to do the basics right every time. We respect Bangladesh and will do our best to win.

South Africa reach World T20 semis

CHITTAGONG (Reuters) - South Africa produced another clinical performance to beat England by three runs in Chittagong to advance to the World Twenty20 semi-finals on Saturday.AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla hit half-centuries to anchor South Africa’s highest total of the tournament of 196-5 before Wayne Parnell took 3-31 to keep England down to 193-7 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium.South Africa are the second team to qualify for the semis after 2007 champions India cruised to the last four from Group Two.The defeat -- second in three Group One Super-10 matches -- sent 2010 champions England out of the semi-final race.Sri Lanka meet New Zealand in their last Group One match tomorrow and the winners will join South Africa in the last four.Pakistan meet Bangladesh in a Group Two match in Dhaka today and if the 2009 champions beat the hosts their last match against title holders the West Indies will decide the last semi-final berth. England, who chased down a 190-run target against Sri Lanka on Thursday, failed to match that performance with Alex Hales (38), Jos Buttler (34) and Ravi Bopara (31) unable to benefit from good starts.Parnell, who was released from the squad for two days to attend a court hearing relating to drug charges in the 2012 Indian Premier League in Mumbai on Friday, dismissed Michael Lumb (18), Hales and Moeen Ali (10) to jolt England after they were off to a 46-run start by the fifth over.Hales hit six boundaries and a six off 22 balls but once he departed the target continued to climb on England with 45 needed off the last three overs and 22 off Dale Steyn’s final over.South Africa’s total was built around a swashbuckling 28-ball 69 not out by De Villiers and a 37-ball 56 by Amla.De Villiers was ruthless in the final overs, taking 26 off Jade Dernbach’s 18th over and reached his fifty with a towering six off just 23 balls. In all he hit nine boundaries and three sixes to help South Africa during an innings stopped twice for floodlight failure.South Africa smashed 75 in the last five overs.Amla and Quinton de Kock (29) helped South Africa to 90 without loss in the 11th over with the former in a punishing mood. The bearded Amla hit six boundaries and two sixes before he was caught at deep mid-wicket off Stuart Broad.South Africa made two changes from the line-up which beat the Netherlands in their last game, with Farhan Behardien and Parnell in for regular skipper Faf Du Plessis -- suspended for one match due to a slow over-rate -- and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.New Zealand sent the Netherlands out of the tournament with a clinical six-wicket win earlier in the day at the same venue.

He intended a reverse scoop but Logan Van Beeks ball swung to force McCullum to nudge into cover for a single. Its pretty well known across the world what kind of player Brendon is, New Zealand bowler Trent Boult said. For him to tick up that milestone is pretty satisfying personally and something the team love to see.McCullum settled New Zealands innings after Timm Van der Gugten had taken Martin Guptill cheaply.
