5 policemen, two robbers killed in shootout By Our Staff Correspondent QUETTA: Five policemen were killed and nine others, two senior officials among them, injured in a shootout after a bank robbery in Mastung on Tuesday. Two robbers also were killed during the encounter and three others were arrested after a clash.
Opposition leader calls for removal of Abid Sher By Syed Irfan Raza ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said on Tuesday that the opposition would submit a privilege motion in parliament against the Minister of State for Water and Power, Abid Sher Ali, for calling legislators power ‘thieves’. Talking to newsmen at the parliament house, he urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to immediately remove the minister from the cabinet.
Provincial govts defaulter of Rs86.5 billion By Ahmad Fraz Khan LAHORE: The power sector’s receivables increased by a staggering Rs92.24 billion to Rs503.257bn from Rs411.013bn during the first nine months of the current fiscal year. The amount works out to be Rs9bn per month or Rs300m a day. Interestingly, the Ministry of Water and Power which runs the power sector is also a defaulter of Rs1.458bn.
Economic revival top priority, says PM LONDON: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday that his government was taking fiscal measures to revive the country’s economy through good governance and efforts to curb corruption, enforce fiscal discipline and widen tax base. Talking to British International Development Secretary Justine Greening who had called on him, the prime minister said priorities of his government included reviving economy, overcoming energy shortage, eradicating extremism and promoting human rights.
Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic light ‘haram’ RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Abdulaziz al-Shaikh has reiterated his fatwa against drivers who jump red traffic light, Al Arabiya News Channel has reported. The Grand Mufti, who is the most senior religious authority in Saudi Arabia, said that such a violation of traffic law is a “major sin”, and referred to a Quranic verse which says, “If you kill one person unjustly it is as if you killed the whole humanity, and if you saved one person it is as if you saved the whole humanity.”
Police detain over 500 in Kashmir before voting SRINAGAR: Police in India-held Kashmir have detained more than 500 residents as well as leaders before the latest round of voting in the disputed region, officers and Kashmiri groups said on Tuesday. Police said the crackdown took place in Srinagar and throughout the constituency that votes on Wednesday as part of the staggered six-week general election.
Envoy urges irreversible steps for Pakistan-India peace By Our Correspondent NEW DELHI: Globalisation without regional integration will never realise its full potential, and there should be irreversible steps towards peace between Delhi and Islamabad, Pakistan’s High Commissioner Abdul Basit said in Mumbai on Tuesday. “Regional stability is in our mutual interest and peace through a peaceful process,” Mr Basit said in a keynote address at the Gateway House: Indian Council of Global relations. His theme was: ‘Pakistan, India: Economic opportunities and Political Challenges’.
Dozens of troops, militants killed in Yemen ADEN: Suspected Al Qaeda militants killed 18 Yemeni soldiers in separate ambushes on Tuesday as the army launched a ground offensive against their remaining strongholds in the south, medical and security sources said. Twelve militants were also killed when the ambush in Shabwa province sparked a gunfight, tribal sources said.
