$200bn of Pakistan in Swiss banks: Dar By Khawar Ghumman ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar staggered the National Assembly on Friday when he revealed that at least $200 billion of ‘Pakistani money’ was stashed away in Swiss banks. In a written reply, Dar told the house that the government was engaging with Swiss authorities to get to the money, hidden away by various Pakistani nationals.
PM invites Imran over ‘a cup of tea’ By Majeed Gill BAHAWALPUR: Terming the May 11 agitation call uncalled for, Nawaz Sharif extended an invitation on Friday to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan for a dialogue at the Prime Minister’s House. “Neither-play-nor-let-others-play strategy won’t work. You have been a sportsman and show the same spirit now,” the prime minister said without naming the PTI chief.
US urges action against Taliban safe havens By Baqir Sajjad Syed ISLAMABAD: The United States on Friday renewed pressure on the Pakistan government to act against safe havens of terrorists in its tribal areas. “Countering cross-border militancy and shutting down safe havens is critical not only for Pakistan’s long-term peace and prosperity but also for positive relations between Pakistan and all its neighbours, including Afghanistan,” US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns said in a statement on the conclusion of his visit.
Hollow war and peace vows stall National Assembly By Raja Asghar ISLAMABAD: Two days before the government is to face a potentially major street challenge from the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), both rivals spent another day in the National Assembly on Friday making vows of war and peace at the cost of other business that provoked a government ally to protest “this tamasha”. Tirades from PTI vice-chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique centring on PTI’s planned march on Sunday did not allow for the resumption of a debate on the prevailing law and order situation, before the house was adjourned for a two-day weekend.
Modi heading for defeat in key UP battle: Kejriwal By Jawed Naqvi NEW DELHI: That a battery of senior party colleagues is escorting him in Varanasi could mean two things for Narendra Modi. Either he is in need of a last-minute thrust to stay clear of trouble, or he is in a mood to do a victory dance even before the first vote is cast, which will be on May 12. Mr Modi’s opponent, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal, propounded a theory on Friday. Mr Modi is staring at defeat, he said, and Mr Kejriwal would be the person to inflict it. “Why did no senior leader go to Vadodra?” Mr Kejriwal wondered in a chat with CNN-IBN. What he meant was that Vadodra in Gujarat was an easier race for Mr Modi and he was more confident of winning in the state of which he is chief minister.
US says it wants no tensions with Pakistan in future By Anwar Iqbal WASHINGTON: The United States wants to work with Pakistan to remove the possibility of future tensions between the two allies in the war against religious extremists, says the US State Department. “We have had some moments in our history, particularly recently, where there has been some mistrust, and that’s why we want to work together so there isn’t,” the department’s deputy spokesperson Marie Harf told a briefing in Washington.
