Steps listed to fight sectarian strifeBy Khawar GhummanISLAMABAD: Over 950 people have been killed in sectarian attacks over the past three years, according to a report compiled by the interior ministry. What is more alarming, however, is that the trend is on the rise and the government seems to have failed to control it. According to the report, 197 people were killed because of sectarian strife in 2011, a number which witnessed a sharp spike to 370 in 2012. And the next year brought no relief as the violence claimed 387 lives.
Interest rate kept unchangedBy Shahid IqbalKARACHI: The State Bank has decided to maintain the interest rate at 10 per cent, meaning that no change was made during the entire second half of the current financial year. The bank stressed the need for more sustainability in positive economic indicators. The SBP’s monetary policy for May-June announced here on Saturday threw doubts on the sustainability of positive indicators. “Recent gains in confidence in the economy, backed by improvement in key indicators, need to be nurtured to ensure their sustainability,” it said. The last change in the interest rate was made in November.

Bulbul Hazaar Dastan: valley of dollsBy Reema AbbasiThe pre-Partition building is an architectural masterstroke — five levels in stretched oval form, cut through the middle like a celebration cake; the sky is visible from each door and a full moon bathes squalid corridors in silver. Bulbul Hazar Dastan has dimmed into a dark alley opposite the iconic Sangeet Mahal; it bursts with waste and women, with an old tailoring shop on one end. The rock stairway is heaped with refuse, rats and cats but the heavy teak railing embedded in its rock wall speaks of good days on Napier Road.
