Sethi back as apex court suspends IHC verdict

ISLAMABAD: Najam Sethi came out happy after the Supreme Court reinstated him as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday, but he declined to answer questions put by waiting journalists.

73 militants killed in air strikes, clash

MIRAMSHAH: At least 73 suspected local and foreign militants were killed in a series of pre-dawn air strikes on hideouts and bases in North Waziristan and in a later clash following an attack on security personnel.

An army major and three other security personnel died in the clash.

Six of a family gunned down

QUETTA: Six members of a family were gunned down in Dashat area of Kech district on Wednesday, according to officials.

Gunmen barged into the house of Abdul Hameed alias Master in Chout village of Dashat area, about 30km from Turbat town, and started firing, killing the six people on the spot.

Modi invites Sharif to swearing-in

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI: An invitation by India’s premier-elect Narendra Modi to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to his oath-taking ceremony on May 26 has served to highlight the uneasy relations between the two countries as it has set off speculation over whether or not it will be accepted.

Prime Minister Sharif is among the leaders of member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) invited by Mr Modi. It is the first time in Indian history that leaders from neighbouring countries have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony of a prime minister.

CII endorses underage marriage

ISLAMABAD: Amid criticism from various quarters, including some of its own members, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), on Wednesday endorsed its earlier ruling that girls as young as nine years old were eligible to be married, “if the signs of puberty are visible”.

The CII meeting, chaired by Maulana Mohammad Khan Sheerani of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), also said that most of the clauses of the existing Muslim Marriage Law, 1961, were un-Islamic.

PM gets two BMWs amid austerity claims

ISLAMABAD: It seems the much-touted ‘austerity measures’ – a popular buzzword among government functionaries – are only meant for the general public.

Dawn has learnt that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has recently acquired two bullet-proof vehicles for his security, cars that have cost the national exchequer over Rs224 million. According to documents available with Dawn, the cars will be used for the prime minister’s private security detail.

Fee reimbursement scheme launched in Quetta

QUETTA: Prime Minister’s Fee Reimbursement Scheme for students belonging to underdeveloped areas was launched here on Wednesday.

Over 33,400 university students of 59 districts across the country, including 5,948 students from Balochistan’s 32 districts, are expected to benefit from the scheme.
