$1.6bn Lahore metro train deal signed with China By Our Staff Reporter LAHORE: Pakistan and China signed on Thursday a $1.6 billion agreement for a metro train project in Punjab, the first of its kind in the country. Financed by China, the Orange Line Metro Train Project will be completed within three years and Chinese companies will design, construct and monitor the project. PM hands out 3G, 4G licences By Jamal Shahid ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday handed out licences for next generation 3G and 4G services to the four cellular companies that had bid on them. The necessary paperwork was concluded and the licences were handed over at a ceremony held at the Serena Hotel amid hopes that the technology would open new avenues of socio-economic development in the country.
Troops step up pressure on militants in N. Waziristan By Pazir Gul MIRAMSHAH: Security forces on Thursday began a cordon and search operation in an area considered to be a stronghold of foreign militants near North Waziristan’s regional headquarters of Miramshah and officials said the troops did not face any resistance. According to security officials, troops moved early in the morning into Machis Camp and the adjoining Khurwani, half a kilometre to the east of Miramshah bazaar – a roughly two square kilometre area dominated by foreign militants, mainly from Uzbekistan.
SC judge brushes aside allegations of ‘bias’ in Geo case By Nasir Iqbal ISLAMABAD: A Supreme Court judge dismissed on Thursday objections raised by a TV show host regarding his fitness to hear a petition filed by Geo TV. “I don’t find any reasons whatsoever not to sit on the bench,” Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja concluded after dictating a longish order justifying why he should continue hearing a case where Geo TV, through their counsel Akram Sheikh, asked the court to intervene and stop a ‘hate campaign’ which has been launched against it.
Pakistan-India engagement positive: US Anwar Iqbal WASHINGTON: Increas­ed engagement between India and Pakistan is a positive step, says the US State Department while welcoming India’s prime minister-elect Narendra Modi’s invitation to the Pakistani premier to attend his inauguration. “Broadly speaking, we welcome increased engagement between India and Pakistan and their leaders … and India’s engagement with its neighbours leading up to the inauguration,” said State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki when asked to comment on Mr Modi’s gesture.
Sharif keeps India guessing on visit Jawed Naqvi NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif kept India guessing on Thursday on whether he would attend the swearing-in ceremony of Indian premier-designate Narendra Modi on Monday or send a high-ranking representative. The TV discussions centred around a view among Delhi’s cluster of Pakistan experts that it was Rawalpindi rather than Islamabad that would take the final call on Mr Modi’s invitation to Mr Sharif.
