Sikhs ‘at the end of their tether’ storm parliament

ISLAMABAD: Frustrated at not having their complaints heeded, a large contingent of Sikhs descended upon Parliament House on Friday to protest the desecration of their holy book in Sindh.

Brandishing traditional daggers and shouting slogans, the protesters managed to evade police deployed around the high-security zone and stormed the parliament building in the early afternoon. They occupied the lawns outside the building for around three hours before a settlement to the standoff was negotiated.

Four militants killed as operation continues

MIRAMSHAH/PESHAWAR: Four suspected militants were killed and three others injured as security forces continued to pound militant hideouts in the Machis Camp area of North Waziristan on Friday.

The military action launched on Wednesday has resulted in displacement of a large number of civilians, with vulnerable families seeking shelter in Miramshah and the adjoining Bannu district.

Drastic cut in subsidies planned

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to drastically reduce subsidies in the new budget and squeeze out higher amounts of surplus from the provinces to meet fiscal deficit limits set under international commitments.

Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed this month on a fiscal deficit target of 4.8 per cent of the GDP (Rs1.63 trillion) for next year against 5.7pc estimated for the current year.

Twitter blocks objectionable tweets at PTA request

NEW YORK: Twitter, the microblogging website, has blocked so-called “blasphemous” tweets five times at the request of Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) , the New York Times reported on Friday.

All the five requests were honoured by the company, meaning that Twitter users in Pakistan can no longer see the content that so disturbed the bureaucrat, Abdul Batin of the PTA — crude drawings of revered personages and photographs of burning copies of Quran.

Punjab CM calls on army chief

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif called on Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif at the army guest-house here on Friday and discussed with him matters of mutual interest.

No press release was issued after the meeting, but it is believed that the current political situation, media affairs and the prime minister’s likely visit to India were on the agenda of the meeting.

Indian consulate in Afghanistan attacked; assailants killed

HERAT: Four insurgent gunmen launched a pre-dawn attack on India’s consulate in the western Afghan city of Herat on Friday before being repelled by security forces, in an assault highlighting instability as Nato troops withdraw.

There were no casualties among Indian staff but at least one policeman was wounded when the attackers stormed a house close to the consulate and opened fire on the building.
