13 drown in drain of toxic effluent Irfan Mughal DERA ISMAIL KHAN: At least 13 people drowned in a drain filled with toxic effluent from a sugar mills in Ramak area of Dera Ismail Khan on Friday. Eight others fell unconscious. According to a man under treatment at a hospital, the people were wading across the drain to return to their homes after harvesting wheat when two of them fell unconscious due to the effluent from the Chashma Sugar Mills.
World Bank approves $12bn loans Khaleeq Kiani ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has approved $12 billion in loans for Pakistan to be disbursed in five years, including $1bn to be provided next week. Rachid Benmessaoud, the bank’s director for Pakistan, told journalists at a video conference on Friday that the World Bank group approved a $1bn loan on Thursday to support the country’s economic reforms, aimed at improving performance of power sector and triggering growth and investment for poverty reduction and shared prosperity.
22 killed in rebel attacks in India AP GAUHATI: Separatist rebels wearing black masks opened fire on Muslim villagers and set their homes ablaze in remote northeastern India, killing at least 22 people over two days, police said on Friday. It was the worst outbreak of violence in the region in two years. The gunmen are members of the Bodo tribe and belong to a faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, said regional police inspector general L.R. Bishnoi.
Situation in Fata under control, corps commanders told The Newspaper's Staff Reporter ISLAMABAD: Military’s top brass took on Friday stock of peace dialogue with militants and the security situation in tribal areas. The generals, who met for the monthly Corps Commanders Conference at the General Headquarters, Inter-Services Public Relations said, “undertook comprehensive review of the prevalent internal and external security situation of the country”.
Saudis get internet hotline to king RIYADH: Saudi citizens can now petition 90-year-old King Abdullah directly and lodge complaints through an internet site set up at the initiative of the monarch himself. The portal tawasol.royalcourt.gov.sa, named after the Arabic word for “communication”, was launched on an experimental basis on Wednesday.
