Drone attack kills 4 Uzbek militants Pazir Gul MIRAMSHAH: Four Uzbek militants were killed in this year’s first US drone attack on Wednesday. The drone targeted a vehicle and a residential compound in Darga Mandi area of North Waziristan. According to official sources, the drone fired two missiles on the car and the compound in Tabbi village near the Afghan border, killing four Uzbek nationals.
Sharif vows to work with Modi Baqir Sajjad Syed ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister’s Office released to the media on Wednesday a letter Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had written to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi vowing to work with him for the “benefit of both nations”. The copy of the letter shared with the media does not carry the date of the correspondence and simply mentions the month “June 2014”.
Commanders briefed on Taliban threat The Newspaper's Staff Reporter ISLAMABAD: Senior commanders of the army were briefed on Wednesday on the Taliban threat and other external challenges. The briefing was given to the commanders at the day-long 72nd Formation Commanders’ Conference held at the General Headquarters. It was chaired by Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif.
New layer of super bureaucratic cadre planned Khaleeq Kiani ISLAMABAD: In the face of the serious problem of brain drain, the government has decided to create another layer of super bureaucratic cadre to be called National Executive Service and set up a corruption helpline to improve governance. Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal told a meeting of the Senate’s financing committee on the budget for the next financial year on Wednesday that the brain drain had become such a serious issue that the position of chief economist of the Planning Commission had been lying vacant for several years.
LeT claim weakens Sharif’s message to Modi The Newspaper's Correspondent NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has told his Indian counterpart in a letter released here on Thursday that he wants to work in harmony with him to resolve all unsettled matters. On the other hand, India, says The Hindu in an analysis, is wary of Lashkar-e-Taiba’s call to avenge this week’s attack on Karachi airport, which the group says was carried out by New Delhi. While in his letter to Mr Modi, Mr Sharif has sought to put to rest speculation, mainly in opposition ranks in Pakistan, that his visit to Delhi was a failure, the brazen attack in Karachi, which apparently came after the letter to Mr Modi was dispatched, has weakened any basis for optimism the Pakistani leader might have exuded in the well intended missive.
