High tides force fishermen to flee homes By Our Staff Reporter KARACHI: Rough sea and high tides forced hundreds of people, mainly fishermen, living along the Karachi-Thatta-Badin coastline to flee their homes, many of which were inundated on Thursday. �We have never seen such high tides over the past decade,� said a fisherman whose family was one of those who fled their Sumar village in the Hawkesbay-Sandspit area.
Ominous clouds hovering over democracy: Achakzai By Raja Asghar ISLAMABAD: Citing �clouds� threatening democracy, a leading government ally, Pakhtunkhawa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai, passionately urged political parties in the National Assembly on Thursday to immediately form a pro-democracy front to fight the perceived danger. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif joined cheers from both sides of the aisle for Mr Achakzai�s speech in a general debate on the new budget in which he also called for the government and the military to come �on the same page� for democracy, a pact between Pakistan and Afghanistan against allowing sanctuaries for rebels from either country, and interfaith harmony.
SHC allows Musharraf to go abroad By Tahir Siddiqui KARACHI: The Sindh High Court struck down on Thursday the federal government�s order of preventing retired General Pervez Musharraf from leaving the country, but the former military ruler will have to wait for two weeks to find out if he could actually travel abroad as the court suspended the operation of its judgment for 15 days enabling the federation to file an appeal in the Supreme Court. While disposing of Gen Musharraf�s petition against placing his name on the exit control list (ECL), a two-judge bench comprising Justices Mohammad Ali Mazhar and Shahnawaz Tariq ordered: �The Memorandum No.12/74/2012-ECL, dated 5th April 2013, placing the name of General (retired) Pervez Musharraf on Exit Control List, is struck down.�
Punjabi Taliban, foreign militants among 16 victims of drone attacks By Pazir Gul MIRAMSHAH: US drone attacks in tribal areas, which resumed on Wednesday after a gap of more than five months, continued on Thursday, leaving another 10 suspected militants dead in two pre-dawn strikes and taking the death toll since Wednesday evening to 16. According to sources, foreign militants and Punjabi Taliban were among the dead. The sources said the drones targeted two militant hideouts, in Tabbi Toolkhel and Darga Mandi areas of North Waziristan.
China to finance, develop airport in Gwadar By Khaleeq Kiani ISLAMABAD: The government disclosed on Thursday that the financing and development of Gwadar International Airport had been �taken over by China� and that the Civil Aviation Authority would not be involved with the process. In addition, the controversy over the change in the route of the $35 million Pak-China Economic Corridor deepened as government officials continued to contradict each other over the reasons for the change.
