Deadline triggers flight from NWA

Dawn Report

MIRAMSHAH/BANNU: The 15-day deadline given by the government to North Waziristan-based tribes to expel militants from their area has sent shockwaves through the volatile region and forced people to leave their hearth and home for safety.

Miramshah, the headquarters of the tribal agency, presented a deserted look on Saturday. Most shopkeepers either kept their shutters down or were busy shifting valuable items to their homes.

PPO no more in force

By Amir Wasim

ISLAMABAD: Although the controversial Protection of Pakistan Ordinance (PPO) completed its extended life on Saturday, the government and the opposition have yet to reach an agreement on its extension or otherwise.

After its failure to get the PPO passed from parliament within the constitutional time limit, the government had sought an extension of 120 days through a resolution in the National Assembly on Feb 6. That period expired on Saturday.

Defence ministry hints at appealing Pemra decision

By Kalbe Ali

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said the ministry will appeal against a decision of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) suspending transmission of Geo TV for a fortnight and imposing a Rs10 million fine on the channel.

In a statement, he said the “Ministry of Defence is absolutely not satisfied with the penalty awarded by Pemra to Geo after declaring it guilty of misconduct”.

BROKERING PEACE AGAINST ALL ODDS

By Aurangzaib Khan

A flour mill is an unlikely place for a tribal Jirga, especially one mulling over such grave security concerns as bringing peace to North Waziristan Agency by expelling foreign militants. But these are extraordinary times. A traditional, egalitarian setting such as the village ground is no more an option. Suicide bombings and targeted killings of tribal elders have put paid to it.

The huddle of Uthmanzai and Dawar tribal leaders — dominant tribes in NWA — in the southern district of Bannu last Tuesday was the third since Hafiz Gul Bahadur, the pro-government chief of the local Taliban, revoked the peace accord he signed with the government in 2008.

SOOJHAN SINGH HAVELI IN RUINS

By Mirza Khurram Shahzad

IT is 9am when I approach Bhabhra Bazaar, a winding street in the shadows of the famous Lal Haveli of Sheikh Rashid in Rawalpindi.

People have queued up at the halwa puri and naan chholay shops, but the jewellery market is still closed. I ask a young man sporting a French-cut beard and gel-spiked hair, “Where’s the Soojhan Singh Haveli?”

By Nasir Iqbal

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has asked Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak to amicably resolve a controversy over the rebuilding of a Hindu shrine in Teri village of Karak district.

“It is unfortunate that the religious-cum-political issue has created a law and order situation in the area,” Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani said and directed KP Advocate General Abdul Lateef Yousufzai to contact the chief minister to get the issue resolved amicably.
