Pakistan’s urban air pollution off the charts: World Bank

ISLAMABAD: “Pakistan’s urban air pollution is among the most severe in the world and it engenders significant damage to human health and the economy,” according to a newly-released report titled ‘Cleaning Pakistan’s Air’. Released by the World Bank, the report calls upon the government to make urban air quality improvement a priority in the country’s policy agenda, noting that the issue has received little attention despite strong evidence indicating an urgent need to tackle pollution in major cities.

Jets pound militant hideouts in Mirali

PESHAWAR: War planes pounded suspected militant hideouts on the outskirts of Mirali town in North Waziristan Agency on Sunday, but there were no reports about casualties.

Officials said the planes shelled five hideouts in Mirali sub-division. Air strikes were also carried out in Mosaki village, about 25km east of Miramshah.

Controversy over Musharraf ‘deal’ deepens

ISLAMABAD: The controversy over former president Pervez Musharraf’s ‘safe passage’ deal with the PPP in 2008 deepened on Sunday when former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said he stood by his statement and declined to comment on the party’s official statement.

“I stick to whatever I have said. And I will not comment on Babar Sahab’s statement,” Mr Gilani said when his attention was drawn to a statement made by Senator Farhatullah Babar, the spokesman for the PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. The former premier was talking to reporters at an Iftar hosted by Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Choudhry Abdul Majeed.

Thousands flee as Israel threatens ground assault

GAZA CITY: Israel briefly deployed troops inside the Gaza Strip for the first time early on Sunday as some 4,000 people fled southward from the northern part of the territory in the face of Israeli threats to step up attacks there.

Neither Israel nor Palestinians show signs of agreeing to a ceasefire to end their weeklong conflict, despite calls by the United Nations Security Council and others to end hostilities.

Pak-Afghan ties key to regional stability: US

WASHINGTON: The stability of the entire region requires cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan, two top US military commanders have told Congress.

At their confirmation hearings this week, an admiral and a general, who are taking over the command of US forces in Afghanistan and other key regions, also pledged to encourage the two nations to work with each other.
