Democracy can’t endure if laws not upheld: CJ

ISLAMABAD: Outgoing Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has a word of caution for democracy: he says it cannot endure if constitutional pledges and values fail to bring about a positive change in the lives of the people.

“Only (the) enforcement of laws and verdicts can promote values of trust and tolerance,” he said at full- court reference held in his honour at the Supreme Court on Friday.

AN early goal by Mats Hummels proved to be the difference as Germany overcame France 1-0 in their World Cup quarter-final clash at the Maracana Stadium on Friday.

Despite gas shortage, ECC lifts ban on CNG kit imports

ISLAMABAD: Even as gas supply to CNG stations is down to just 18 hours a week, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Friday lifted a ban on the import of CNG kits and cylinders for factory-fitted vehicles, but deferred a decision on gas tariff, ostensibly to avoid taking an unpopular decision in Ramazan.

Chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the ECC also deferred a proposal from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources to increase CNG prices for consumers by another Rs5.50 per kilogram to placate CNG operators.

PPP calls for revisiting Charter of Democracy

KARACHI: Senior PPP leader Senator Mian Raza Rabbani has called for revisiting the Charter of Demo­cracy of 2006 in efforts to bring about a new covenant among the democratic forces to save the country from internal and external threats.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he warned: “If any attempt is made to derail the democratic process, it will not be a threat this time to the 1973 Constitution but to the federation.”

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif finally succeeded in bringing an annoyed Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to the provincial metropolis from Islamabad in his plane on Friday evening for a meeting with the prime minister.

The interior minister has been missing from the political scene for about a month, reportedly after developing differences with the PML-N high command over issues pertaining to the working of his ministry.

SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted by near-empty streets lined by security personnel on his first official visit to India-held Kashmir on Friday, as local leaders enforced a strike to demand political dialogue about the future of the disputed region.

Schools and shops were shuttered and normally busy roads were free of traffic in Srinagar, when Modi arrived to meet army commanders in one of the world’s most militarised regions.

Iraqi army retakes Saddam’s birthplace

BAGHDAD: The Iraqi army retook Saddam Hussein’s home village overnight, a symbolic victory in its struggle to seize back swathes of the country from Sunni insurgents.

Backed by helicopter gunships and helped by Shia volunteers, the army recaptured the village of Awja in an hour-long battle on Thursday night, according to state media, police and local inhabitants.

Saudi man missing since ’75 found in Pakistan: paper

RIYADH: A man who left his home in Saudi Arabia 39 years ago, met with an accident, lost his memory and disappeared has been found in Pakistan, a Saudi newspaper reported on Friday.

The man left his home in the central Saudi town of Buraydah in 1975 to look for work. He told his mother he was heading for the northern Saudi city of Arar, near the border with Iraq. But he suffered an accident and lost his memory.
