USA and Europe impose new economic sanctions over Russia

Posted:

WASHINGTON: (AP) - Spurred to new action by the downing of the Malaysia airliner, the European Union approved dramatically tougher economic sanctions Tuesday against Russia, followed swiftly by a new round of U.S. penalties targeting key sectors of the Russian economy. The coordinated sanctions were aimed at increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his country's support for separatists in eastern Ukraine whom the West blames for taking down the passenger jet nearly two weeks ago.Today Russia is once again isolating itself from the international community, setting back decades of genuine progress, President Barack Obama said. It does not have to be this way. This a choice Russia and President Putin has made.Europe's actions were particularly significant given that the continent has a far stronger economic relationship with Russia than the U.S. does Until this week, the EU sanctions had lagged behind the American penalties, in part because of leaders' concerns about a negative impact on their own economies. But Europe's calculus shifted sharply after a surface-to-air missile brought down the passenger jet, killing nearly 300 people including more than 200 Europeans.

NASA's Opportunity surpasses benchmark set in 1973 by a Russian probe

Posted:

LOS ANGELES: (Reuters) - NASA's decade-old Mars rover Opportunity has set a new off-Earth, off-road distance record, logging just over 25 miles (40 km) on the surface of the Red Planet to surpass the benchmark set in 1973 by a Russian probe on the moon.Opportunity, which arrived on Mars in January 2004, a few weeks after its now-defunct rover twin Spirit, was built to drive only about a single kilometer but has continued to operate far beyond its design capabilities. Earlier this year, the aging but intrepid rover, a six-wheeled vehicle about the size of a golf cart, found evidence that fresh water once pooled on the surface of Mars, reinforcing similar discoveries made by a newer, larger probe Curiosity, on the other side of the planet. On Sunday, the robot rover advanced another 157 feet (48 meters) as it continued along the rim of a Martian crater, putting Opportunity's total odometer at 25.01 miles (40.25 km), according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Pasadena, California. By comparison, the Soviet Union's Lunokhod 2 rover drove about 24.2 miles (39 km) in less than five months after landing on Earth's moon on Jan. 15, 1973, JPL said. The manned lunar rover driven by astronauts of the Apollo 17 mission logged 22.2 miles (35.7 km) in 1972. Opportunity has driven farther than any other wheeled vehicle on another world, JPL's Mars Exploration Rover Project Manager John Callas said in a statement. Opportunity still has miles to go.Scientists said they plan next to direct the rover to a nearby Martian valley that would extend its accumulated operating distance to 26.2 miles, the traditional length of a marathon.

Women should not laugh loudly: Deputy Prime Minister Turkey

Posted:

ISTANBUL, July 29, 2014 (AFP) - One of the most senior members of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government sparked an outcry on Tuesday after declaring that women should not laugh loudly in public.Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc, one of the co-founders of the ruling Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), made the comment while lamenting the moral decline of modern society.A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent, Arinc said in a speech on Monday in the western Bursa region for the Bayram holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims. She should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times, he added.Turkish women took to social media in droves to denounce Arinc's comments, posting pictures of themselves deliriously laughing under the hashtags kahkaha (laughter) and direnkahkaha (resistlaughter) which have now gone viral. The ruling AKP is accused by critics of seeking to erode Turkey's strict separation of religion and state -- the basis of the secular republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.Arinc went on to denounce a moral degradation that left society awash with drugs and prostitution, and lashed out at popular Turkish soap operas for encouraging lax lifestyles, in comments quoted throughout the Turkish media and online. He pointed to the use of bonzai, a synthetic drug which has become a craze in some parts of low income Turkish society and is now a serious social problem. We have to rediscover the Koran. We have gone backwards, morally, said Arinc. We have become a very different society.Arinc also said a man should be strongly tied to his wife and love his children while a woman should protect her husband's honour. He denounced the excessive use of cars, saying that if even the river Nile was filled with petrol, there wouldn't be enough to go around.Arinc also slammed the excessive use of mobile phones in Turkish society, with women spending hours on the phone to swap recipes.Imitating a Turkish woman on her mobile, he said, 'Is there nothing else going on? What happened to Ayse's daughter? When's the wedding?' “People should say these things face to face, he added. His comments provoked a storm among AKP critics, with political tensions riding high as Erdogan prepares to stand in presidential elections on August 10.Erdogan's main rival in the polls, the mild-mannered former head of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, himself took to Twitter to poke fun at Arinc. We need to hear the happy laughter of women, he wrote.Anti-Erdogan bloggers responded with even greater anger.Stop giving us moral lessons and instead count all the money that you have stolen, wrote one Twitter user, bturkmen, referring to corruption allegations against Erdogan and his circle that surfaced last year.A pious Muslim who does not drink and whose wife wears the Muslim headscarf, Erdogan has always denied seeking to erode Turkey's secular principles.Anger at the government's attitudes towards secular Turks erupted into deadly protests that shook Erdogan last year sparked by plans to redevelop a park in Istanbul.

US, Israel, and their ties that bind

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US politicians mired in Washington gridlock agree on virtually nothing these days. Nothing, it seems, apart from their unquestioned support for Israel.A lopsided war has raged between Hamas and the Israeli army which has launched a punishing air and ground offensive in an effort to halt the attacks. More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed, mostly civilians, while 49 Israelis have died, mostly soldiers. With the death toll soaring, Israel has come in for harsh criticism in many parts of the world including Europe, where pro-Gaza demonstrations descended into anti-Semitic riots. Not so in Washington. The United States is Israel's chief backer at the United Nations, where it routinely blocks Security Council resolutions condemning the Jewish state.Washington has funnelled more than $100 billion in aid to Israel since its formation in 1948, and consistently provides its chief Mideast ally with up-to-the minute weaponry.Money to Israel flows through Congress largely uncontested -- including now, with lawmakers signalling intention to commit $225 million for Israel's Iron Dome missile defense shield. In short, America's got Israel's back, US National Security Advisor Susan Rice assured a gathering of Jewish leaders Monday in Washington. We've always had a truly special relationship.Several lawmakers in attendance, including House Speaker John Boehner, each repeated the refrain in their own way. If there is a rocket on Israel, there is a rocket on America, said congressman Kevin McCarthy, who next week becomes the number two House Republican.Senators feuding over everything from budget bills to highway funding have united to unanimously pass a resolution backing Israel's right to defend itself against unprovoked rocket fire by Hamas. A similar measure unanimously passed the House of Representatives.- A 'truly special' relationship -==================================Why are Washington politicians in lock step with Israel? Chief reasons include democratic principles, shared values, vocal evangelical Christians, and pressure from the powerful pro-Israel lobby. The United States recognized Israel 11 minutes after it proclaimed independence, but the relationship was rocky in early years. Washington disapproved of Israel's invasion of Egypt in 1956 and refused to sell any major weapons to Israel until the 1960s.But thanks to a changing US containment and strategic posture (against the Soviet Union), US-Israeli relations grew by leaps and bounds after 1967, wrote George Washington University political professor Michael Barnett.Ever since, through bitter wars, deadly terror attacks, failed peace initiatives, and deeply controversial Jewish settlement expansions, Washington has sought to be a force for dispute resolution in the region.Middle East stability was paramount, and Washington partnered accordingly with Israel to keep the region off the boil. Most US presidents since 1948 have acknowledged the special relationship, but Rabbi William Gershon believes it is actually centuries old.I would argue it started back in 1654, when Jews came to this country and were very involved in supporting the American Revolution, Gershon, president of the Rabbinical Assembly of the world's Conservative movement, told AFP.Early Jewish Americans embraced democratic principles, and the country's Founding Fathers hewed closely to Hebrew traditions, rooting the modern republic on the Bible while insisting on religious tolerance.Early pilgrims fleeing persecution in England described their arrival in the new world as a virtual re-enactment of the Exodus. Many Americans, Gershon said, see the Jewish state embracing the same ideals and values that have come to define America.Israel being the only real democracy in the Middle East, I really do believe those bonds are strong, even when they do get strained, even when we disagree.American Christians provide a broad flank of support for Israel, arguing that the Holy Land has been part and parcel of Judaism -- and by extension Christianity -- for millennia. Our commitment to Israel is huge, Pastor Paul de Vries, president of the New York Divinity School, told Jewish leaders.Israel remains the only country where Christians are free to worship in safety and liberty throughout the Middle East, de Vries added. With many conservative Republicans fueled by an active Christian evangelical voter base, such lawmakers are among the most vocal supporters of Israel.Adding no small amount of pro-Israel slant to Capitol Hill is the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has had great success in pushing through legislation it supports.Critics and supporters alike see AIPAC as extraordinarily effective, and a National Journal survey of insiders ranked it the second most powerful lobbying group in Washington.

Cricket: ICC warn Ali against repeat of Gaza protest

SOUTHAMPTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Englands Moeen Ali has been warned by world cricket chiefs not to wear wristbands declaring his support for the people of Gaza again during international matches. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) said Ali would face no disciplinary action on this occasion after being warned about his future conduct by match referee David Boon, the former Australia batsman.Worcestershire all-rounder Ali wore wristbands during the third Test match against India on Monday that read Save Gaza and Free Palestine, while batting during Englands first innings at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. The conflict in Gaza is entering its fourth week, with the Palestinian death toll passing the 1,100 mark and 56 people losing their lives on the Israeli side. That prompted the ICC to say they were investigating the incident and a spokesman for the global governing body told AFP on Tuesday: The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match.Moeen Ali was told by the match referee that whilst he is free to express his views on such causes away from the cricket field, he is not permitted to wear the wristbands on the field of play and warned not to wear the bands again during an international match. The 27-year-old Ali, a Birmingham-born practising Muslim of Pakistani descent, was photographed recently helping raise funds for Gaza relief efforts in his home city in central England.Alis wristbands were only on public display for 42 minutes on Monday while he made 12 runs off 28 balls before he was caught off India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. On Monday, the England and Wales Cricket Board insisted they had no issues with Alis conduct. As far as we are concerned, he has not committed any offence, an ECB spokesman said, adding it was up to the ICC to decide what action, if any, Ali should face.Meanwhile other cricketers expressed their support of Ali on Twitter.Absolutely love this Well done Moeen bro Keep showing your support Pray4Gaza wrote former England cricketer Ajmal Shahzad.Good on brother mo prayforGaza wrote Lancashire and former England bowler Kabir Ali, Moeens cousin. We have always worn wristbands or ribbons when showing support 4an incident or raising awareness,we do it for animal rights too, y not humans, wrote former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood.Other sports have also had to confront the issue of competitors making political, pro-Gaza protests. On Friday, Malaysian cyclist Azizulhasni Awang was warned he risked being thrown out of the Commonwealth Games if he repeated wearing gloves bearing the message Save Gaza.Awang could have been ejected from the 2014 Glasgow Games after wearing the gloves in competition on Thursday.Instead the 26-year-old was given a reprimand and warned not to wear them again.Though Awang insisted his message was humanitarian rather than politically-charged, he issued an apology.

Oil prices fall ahead of US data

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Oil prices slipped further in Asian trade Tuesday on fears about global demand but losses were limited by concerns about the crisis in Ukraine, analysts said.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for September delivery was down 33 cents at $101.34 a barrel in afternoon trade and Brent crude for September tumbled 13 cents at $107.44.Singapore's United Overseas Bank said prices were hit by concerns about global demand, but added that fears of tougher western sanctions against Russia over its support of separatist rebels in Ukraine were providing support. The European Union is expected Tuesday to impose fresh measures against Russia, but there are fears the move could hit the struggling eurozone economy as Russia is a key supplier of energy to the region.Investors are also keeping an eye on the release of key US data, including on second quarter growth and job creation as well as consumer confidence in the world's biggest oil consumer. Also, Wednesday will see the US Federal Reserve kick off its latest policy meeting. While bank policymakers are expected to keep interest rates at record lows and further cut their stimulus programme investors are hoping for an indication that monetary policy could be tightened soon.Singapore banking giant DBS said there should be no surprises as the Fed has already signalled that it will end its massive economic stimulus measures later this year. The Fed has already telegraphed its intention to end asset purchases by October, DBS said, adding that its intentions would become clearer during its annual symposium on August 21-23 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Karzai cousin killed in Afghan suicide attack: officials

Posted:

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AFP) - A suicide attacker killed a cousin of outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai near the volatile southern city of Kandahar on Tuesday, officials said, raising tensions during a struggle over the contested election result.Hashmat Karzai was a campaign manager in Kandahar for Ashraf Ghani, one of the two presidential candidates involved in a bitter dispute over fraud that threatens to pitch the country into worsening instability.Hashmat Karzai, who famously owned a pet lion, was killed by a man with explosives hidden inside his turban when visitors arrived to celebrate Eid, the holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.A suicide bomber disguised as a guest came to Hashmat Karzai's house to greet him, Dawa Khan Minapal, the Kandahar provincial governor's spokesman, told AFP.After he hugged Hashmat, he blew up his explosives and killed him.Ghani and opposition leader Abdullah Abdullah are at loggerheads over the June 14 second-round election, which has been mired in allegations of massive fraud.Ghani won the vote according to preliminary results, but an audit of the ballots is under way after Abdullah refused to accept defeat due to fraud claims. With the audit triggering another outbreak of complaints from both sides, many fear the country could be at risk of a revival of the ethnic violence seen during the 1992-1996 civil war.Hashmat Karzai first worked in this year's presidential election campaign for Qayyum Karzai, the president's brother, and later moved to support Ghani when Qayyum withdrew from the race.
