SC restrains state functionaries from unconstitutional steps

ISLAMABAD: Moving quickly to pre-empt any possible military action against the democratically elected government, the Supreme Court on Friday restrained state authorities from taking any steps unwarranted by the Constitution and the law.

PAT sit-in marred by confusion

ISLAMABAD: The main Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) rally led by its chief Dr Tahirul Qadri, which set off from Model Town in Lahore on Thursday, entered Islamabad city limits on Friday just before midnight.

The venue of the PAT gathering was the subject of much controversy all day Friday. Originally allocated a stretch of the Islamabad Expressway/8th Avenue, PAT leaders campaigned the whole day to try and shift their rallying point, first to Fazl-i-Haq Road (which runs alongside Blue Area) and then to Khayaban-i-Suharwardy (that runs alongside Kashmir Highway).

12 ‘Uzbeks’ killed in attacks on airbases

QUETTA: Twelve terrorists were killed and 11 security personnel injured in Thursday night’s abortive attacks on the PAF’s Samungli base and the army aviation’s Khalid base.

Fearing arrest, some of the attackers blew themselves up when besieged by security forces. Others were killed in the hours-long gun battle.

ISLAMABAD: Late by an entire day, PTI’s Azadi march finally entered Islam­abad as the clock was ticking on India’s Independence Day, Pakistan’s Azadi anniversary having already passed.

It was after eleven that the tired workers who had been waiting patiently on Kashmir Highway were told that Imran Khan had entered Islamabad and was on his way to ground zero.

GUJRANWALA: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s Azadi march was ‘fired upon’ and pelted with stones allegedly by workers of the PML-N when it was leaving for Islamabad after an eight-hour stopover here on Friday.

Police denied any incident of shooting. Later on the advice of police, PTI Chairman Imran Khan left the container and boarded a bullet-proof Land Cruiser for onward journey.

GAZA CITY: Relatively confident of their safety, Palestinians attended weekly prayers on Friday as a fragile ceasefire held for a second day and tough talks loomed on a more lasting peace.

For the first time since fighting began between Israel and Hamas on July 8, residents in Gaza City were able to attend the Friday prayers without fear of being killed. At least 1,962 Palestinians and 67 people on the Israeli side have died in the conflict.

UN to feed 1m people hit by Ebola

DAKAR: The United Nations is to step up food aid to reach up to a million people affected by the Ebola outbreak wreaking havoc in west Africa, the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday.

With states of emergency and severe restrictions on movement imposed in the three worst-hit countries, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the UN agency is bringing in its own aircraft to transport its personnel.
