India beat England by 6 wickets to win 3rd ODI

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - India's spinners again proved England's undoing as the tourists won the third one-day international at Trent Bridge on Saturday by six wickets to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. World champions India, chasing a modest 228 for victory, cruised to 228 for four with seven overs to spare.Ambati Rayudu, only playing because of Rohit Sharma's tour-ending finger injury, was an ODI-best 64 not out. Together with Suresh Raina, who followed up his 100 in India's equally dominant 133-run victory in Cardiff on Wednesday with a run-a-ball 42, Rayudu put on 87 for the fourth wicket. But it was the first innings that decided the course of the match, with England dismissed for a meagre 227 after losing the toss. They were 82 without loss thanks to under-fire captain Alastair Cook (44) and Alex Hales (42).But England, as happened in Cardiff, again succumbed to spin as they lost three wickets for 15 runs in six overs to be 97 for three.Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, the man-of-the-match, took three for 39, with only Jos Buttler (42), apart from Cook and Hales, passing 40 in the innings.England managed just one four in 26 overs midway through their innings and didn't hit a six until the last over. The spinners did it for us -- Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja bowled really well but also Raina's spell was important, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni told Sky Sports.Rayudu bowled and batted well, he's a good player of spin and we're still looking for a number four batsman to bat through the innings, Dhoni added. For Cook it was an all-too familiar scenario. We didn't play very well, he said. We got off to another good start but, from 80-0, you expect to get more than 230.As for England's ongoing problems against spin, Cook added: It's something we're not doing very well at the moment but we've got to keep working at it.England's opening stand ended when Hales, on his Nottinghamshire home ground, top-edged a sweep off Raina's sixth ball and was caught by wicketkeeper Dhoni.Hales had also fallen to the sweep after making 40 on ODI debut in Cardiff and his exit was the cue for England to again get bogged down against spin.Rayudu took his first international wicket when he had Cook stumped down the legside by Dhoni. Cook, whom former England team-mate Graeme Swann suggested this week should quit one-day cricket because he scores too slowly, took 65 balls to get his runs on Saturday.Another Dhoni stumping, off Jadeja, saw Joe Root fall for two. Eoin Morgan (10) was also undone by spin, Ashwin turning the ball away from the left-hander and Dhoni holding the edge to complete his fourth dismissal of the innings. An ambling Ian Bell (28) was then run out by Mohit Sharma's dramatic direct hit from wide long-off.All-rounder Ben Stokes (two) added to his growing list of low scores for England when Raina held a brilliant low, one-handed, slip catch off Ashwin.Stokes's exit left England 149 for six and, unsurprisingly, the lower order could not repair the damage.Ajinkya Rahane, promoted to open in place of Rohit Sharma, showed his class with a textbook cover-driven four off James Anderson.Rahane had made 45, featuring six fours and a six, when fast bowler Steven Finn, playing his first international match in nearly a year, had him caught behind.Virat Kohli averaged just 13.4 in India's preceding 3-1 Test series defeat and was out for a duck on Wednesday. But he found his form with 40 -- his best international score of a tough tour -- before flicking Stokes straight to Tredwell at mid-on.India were now 120 for three but the rarely troubled Rayudu went on to complete an impressive fifty when he deliberately uppercut Finn for his fifth four in 63 balls. The series continues at Birmingham's Edgbaston ground on Tuesday.

Tennis: Kvitova falls, Djokovic, Murray, Serena through

NEW YORK (AFP) - Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova became the fifth top 10 seed to exit the US Open in the first week when she was knocked out by Serbian world number 145 Aleksandra Krunic on Saturday. But there were no such problems for men's top seed Novak Djokovic and eighth-seeded Andy Murray, both former champions in New York, who remained on course for a mouth-watering quarter-final showdown.Five-time women's champion Serena Williams was also a comfortable winner, racking up her 75th victory at the US Open.Third seeded Kvitova lost her third round tie 6-4, 6-4 to pint-sized 21-year-old Krunic, who came through qualifying and had never won a match at a major before this year's event.Kvitova joins second seed Simona Halep, fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, Angelique Kerber, the sixth seed, and eighth-seeded Ana Ivanovic in failing to make the fourth round. The 24-year-old Kvitova dropped serve five times and committed 34 unforced errors against the 5ft 4in (1.63m) Krunic who divides her time between the pro tour and studying for a university economics degree. It was an honour to play on the same court as Petra, she's a great champion. I watched both her wins at Wimbledon, said Krunic, who next plays former world number one Victoria Azarenka, the runner-up to Williams in the last two years.Kvitova said she was taken by surprise by her opponent's poise and power.I didn't really expect how she played so well. Suddenly she just pushed the ball very hard, said the Czech.Djokovic, the 2011 champion, brushed aside America's Sam Querrey for the eighth time in nine meetings, with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win taking the world number one into the fourth round at a major for the 22nd consecutive time.Sam is big server, very powerful. But he doesn't move that well so I wanted to keep him moving around the court, mix up the pace and get as many returns as possible back, said Djokovic after an 85-minute win which was never in doubt from the time he raced into a 5-0 lead in the first set.Djokovic will next face John Isner, the last American left in the draw, if the 13th seed can beat Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.Women's top seed and double defending champion Serena Williams eased past her third successive American compatriot, Uzbekistan-born left-hander Varvara Lepchenko, 6-3, 6-3 and will tackle tough Estonian Kaia Kanepi for a quarter-final berth.I had to make some adjustments because of the wind but I got some excellent advice from my coach, said 32-year-old Williams, playing in her 15th US Open and aiming to become just the second woman after Chris Evert in the 1970s to win three New York titles in succession. My opponent played at an unbelievable level but I tried to hang in there and do what I needed to do.Murray, the 2012 champion, hit 47 winners in a 6-1, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Russia's Andrey Kuznetsov, the world 96, to book a seventh appearance in the fourth round.I got off to a good start and then had a cushion when he got back into the match in the third set, said 27-year-old Murray. Also going through to the last-16 for a third successive year was Canadian fifth seed Milos Raonic who beat Victor Estrella Burgos, the 34-year-old tournament debutant from the Dominican Republic, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/3).He will face Japanese 10th seed Kei Nishikori who reached the fourth round for the first time since his 2008 debut with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.Later Saturday, Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, the third seed, faces Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic, the world number 92, who has never defeated a top-10 opponent in 10 attempts.

Football: Chelsea beat Everton in goalfest, City crash

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea overpowered Everton 6-3 in a remarkable game on Saturday to preserve their 100 percent record in the Premier League, after Manchester City were stunned by Stoke City.Jose Mourinho's Chelsea led 2-0, 3-1, and 4-2, but Everton kept coming back at them and it was not until Diego Costa made it 6-3 with his second goal in the last minute that the home side finally admitted defeat at an enraptured Goodison Park.Chelsea were 2-0 up inside three minutes, with Diego Costa tucking away a pass from Cesc Fabregas after only 36 seconds before Ramires teed up Branislav Ivanovic to drill a low shot past Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard. But Kevin Mirallas reduced the arrears with a fine header on the stroke of half-time and when Everton right-back Seamus Coleman slid an Eden Hazard cross into his own goal in the 67th minute, it heralded a flurry of five goals in 10 minutes. Two minutes later Steven Naismith hit back for the hosts to make it 3-2 and although Nemanja Matic then restored the visitors' two-goal cushion, Samuel Eto'o marked his first Everton appearance since leaving Chelsea by heading home. But Ramires gathered a pass from Matic and toed the ball past Howard to make it 5-3 and after Mirallas had hit the post, Costa exploited an error from Everton substitute Muhamed Besic to complete the scoring with a classy finish. The result left Chelsea as one of only two teams to have won their first three games, along with Swansea City, although Tottenham Hotspur can emulate them with victory over Liverpool on Sunday. If the salt and pepper of football is goals, to have nine goals in a Premier League match is fantastic ingredients, Mourinho told Sky Sports.I know Everton are a good offensive side and their movement is not easy to control, but we concede three goals -- it is too much.Senegalese striker Mame Biram Diouf scored a memorable solo goal as Stoke condemned defending champions Manchester City to their first defeat of the season with a shock 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium. The former Manchester United forward struck in the 58th minute, picking up the ball in his own half and powering past Aleksandar Kolarov and Vincent Kompany before squeezing a shot between the legs of City goalkeeper Joe Hart.It was only the second time City had failed to score at home in 71 league matches and only their second home defeat since May 2013.It's a surprising defeat because we don't expect to lose against Stoke, but these games sometimes happen, said City manager Manuel Pellegrini. We tried from everywhere. We are not very creative, we did not find the space, and that is credit to Stoke.British-record signing Angel di Maria made his Manchester United debut earlier on Saturday, but was unable to inspire his new side to victory as they drew 0-0 at promoted Burnley.A 59.7 million pounds ($98 million, 75 million euros) acquisition from Real Madrid, Di Maria started the game and produced some probing passes and darting runs, but he could not illuminate United's path to goal against Sean Dyche's side. After a loss to Swansea, a draw at Sunderland and a 4-0 humiliation by third-tier Milton Keynes Dons in the League Cup, new United manager Louis van Gaal has now gone four competitive games without recording a win.We created chances, but you have to score, Van Gaal told BT Sport. A club like Manchester United has to win. We have two points from nine and that's disappointing.Swansea finished the day level on nine points with Chelsea after extending their 100 percent record by beating West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at the Liberty Stadium, where Nathan Dyer claimed a brace.Neil Warnock's second stint as Crystal Palace manager began in thrilling fashion as Wilfried Zaha marked his own return to the club by scoring a 95th-minute equaliser to earn a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United.Newcastle twice fell behind, but they looked to have secured victory in the 88th minute when Mike Williamson made it 3-2, only for Zaha -- back at Palace on loan from Manchester United -- to drill home deep into injury time.Elsewhere, a 45th-minute Charlie Austin strike saw Queens Park Rangers claim their first victory of the season in a 1-0 win over Sunderland, while Morgan Schneiderlin scored twice as Southampton came from behind to win 3-1 at West Ham United.

Motorcycling: Marquez takes pole in British MotoGP

SILVERSTONE (AFP) - Runaway world championship leader Marc Marquez secured his 10th pole position out of a possible 12 this season on Saturday as he recorded the fastest time in qualifying for the British MotoGP at Silverstone. The 21-year-old Spaniard -- who saw his bid for a record 11th successive win ended with fourth in the Czech race a fortnight ago -- will start on the front of the grid on his Honda alongside Italian Andrea Dovizioso and Spain's two-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo.Marquez, who along with his brother Alex who races in the Moto3 category was watched by their father Julia from the pitlane, said that he had been cautious after a crash in morning practice. It was only a small crash but I was still careful in qualifying, said Marquez, who was recording his 46th career pole.I'm happy with the bike and hoping for a good day tomorrow (Sunday) and fighting for victory, he told BT Sport.Dovizioso, who sits in fifth position in the standings with 118 points, said that hard work by his Ducati team was starting to pay off.The team has worked really hard and I am so happy with the results. The race will be difficult but we are improving, said the Italian.Lorenzo, who will be bidding for a third successive British GP win, said he and his Yamaha team had come good in adversity. This bike is very difficult to ride, he said.We have improved it a little bit and got a good time here in difficult conditions so I have to be very satisfied. On the second row will be Aleix Esparagaro while Czech MotoGP winner and Marquez' team-mate Dani Pedrosa is on the third row with Italian legend Valentino Rossi.Marquez has 263 points after 11 races with Pedrosa, who has never won the world title in this category or the 500cc its predecessor, second on 186 and Rossi is third with 173.

Badminton: Lee into third world final, Li seals return trip

Posted:

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Malaysian world number one Lee Chong Wei secured a third straight men's singles finals appearance at the badminton world championships on Saturday while women's top seed Li Xuerui of China also advanced to the title match.Top-ranked Lee, twice a runner-up at the tournament, brushed aside young Danish hopeful Viktor Axelsen 21-9, 21-7 in front of a partisan Copenhagen crowd to move within touching distance of a first major title.Despite his advancing years Lee, who will turn 32 in October, demonstrated his enduring class with a sublime blend of blistering overheads and resolute defence to reel off 12 of the final 13 points in the first game. After that he never looked back. The Malaysian star, also a two-time Olympic singles silver medallist, then pocketed 21 of 25 points after trailing 3-0 early in the second set to complete a comprehensive victory over the 14th seed.So far things have got better each match, said Lee, who will face Chinese second seed Chen Long in Sunday's final.I can go back to resting now and prepare for tomorrow. The country will be watching and there will be more pressure on my shoulders. I will try not to think about the pressure and give a big present to my country, added Lee, who is hoping to give people back home further cause for celebration on Merdeka Day, which marks Malaysia's 1957 independence from British colonial rule.Meanwhile Chen, an Olympic bronze medallist two years ago, moved into his first world championship final after beating Indonesian fifth seed Tommy Sugiarto 21-16, 22-20 to keep alive China's hope of a seventh successive singles title.Earlier Li ended the run of Japanese dynamo and 16th seed Minatsi Mitani to seal a return to the women's singles final. World number one Li, runner-up a year ago on home soil in Guangzhou, dominated from the beginning with Mitani, sporting a heavily strapped right leg, unable to offer much resistance as Li powered to a 21-8, 21-14 victory.Mitani had claimed the scalp of defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the last 16 before upsetting South Korean fifth seed Sung Ji-hyun in the quarters but there were no repeat heroics this time.Backed by vocal support from the Chinese delegation Li made quick work of Mitani, likely feeling the effects of successive gruelling three-set matches, to move a step closer to adding to the Olympic crown she won at London 2012.Mitani is a very high-level player. We've played each other several times and she always fights to the last point, said Li of her battling opponent.I lost the first set in two of the last three meetings. This time my coach and I prepared very well before the match. We've watched Mitani during these world championships and came up with a good game plan and it worked, added the 23-year-old, who will play Spain's Carolina Marin for a maiden title.Ninth seed Marin, the reigning European champion, saw off Indian teenager P.V. Sindhu 21-17, 21-15 to become the first Spanish finalist in tournament history and will aim to become the first European world champion in women's singles since Denmark's Camilla Martin in 1999.I'm really excited with my game. I stuck to my plan. I have to thank my team because they analysed my opponent really well, said Marin. The most important thing is to enjoy tomorrow - it's my first final. I hope I will play several more. I'm not going to think about it but just enjoy it.

ISLAMAMBAD (Dunya News) – In an exclusive interview with Dunya News, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ‎‎(PTI) chairperson Imran Khan claimed Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif is primarily concerned with his ‎wealth only and is least bothered about democracy.‎Khan stated that the right to protest is a constitutional right and happens everywhere in the world, ‎and Prime Ministers have resigned in foreign countries wherever they were blamed but this PM would ‎never do so. 230 injured as police clash with protesters in Islamabad

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - At least 230 people were wounded in clashes between police and protesters in Islamabad, hospital officials said Sunday, as a fortnight-long political impasse took a violent turn. The violence, which began late Saturday and continued early Sunday, broke out after around 25,000 people marched from parliament to the prime ministers house, where some attempted to remove barricades around it with cranes, an AFP reporter at the scene said. Police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. The protesters, led by Pakistan Teheek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Tahir ul Qadri, had been camped outside parliament house since August 15 demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif quit amid allegations of vote rigging. The crisis took on a new dimension earlier in the week after the government asked the powerful army to mediate, raising fears the military would use the situation to enact a soft coup and increase its dominance over civilian authorities. There are 1,600 to 2,000 trained terrorists. They have 200 women who are trained in the use of firearms and they have come with the intention of occupying state buildings, defence minister Khawaja Asif told AFP as the fighting broke out late Saturday. These are buildings that are symbols of the state, he said. Their attempts are being resisted. And we will resist these with full force.AFPs correspondent at the scene said protesters were carrying batons and sling-shots.The injured were rushed to Islamabads two main hospitals, and the number of casualties is expected to rise as clashes continue.Wasim Khawaja, spokesman for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Islamabad, told AFP that 164 injured people have been taken to his hospital, while the Poly Clinic hospital said it had received 70 wounded so far.Condition of two of them was critical. There were more than 20 policemen among the injured, Khawaja said, with a second doctor confirming that figure. Khawaja also said most of the victims had been injured by rubber bullets, and that that 17 of them were women. Khurram Ghuman, a spokesman at Islamabads Poly Clinic hospital, told AFP: There are 20 women among them and most have been affected by tear gas, but they all are in stable condition.Demonstrations have also erupted in parts of the eastern city of Lahore and the port city of Karachi.Protesters with batons have burned tyres and blocked roads in Lahore, an AFP reporter said. Police used batons and fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators there. The protests remained peaceful in Karachi, however.Khan and Qadri both claim that the 2013 elections which saw Prime Sharif sweep to power were massively rigged. Local and foreign observers said the polls were credible, and analysts believe the protests have been coordinated by the powerful army as a means of re-asserting its dominance over civilian authorities.Paramilitary troops and soldiers standing guard to protect the PMs house as well as other sensitive installations have not yet been called into action, despite the violence Sunday.Women and children have been prominent among both protest groups, and the rising number of casualties is set to further polarise the already embittered political atmosphere. But government officials defended the use of force. The demonstrators attacked first. They wanted to occupy the prime ministers house and stage a sit-in there, said Asif Kirmani, an aide of Sharif.Qadri, however, said the government began the violence. The march is heading to its destination, we were peaceful but government began the bloodshed, he said.Imran Khan told media during the violence that he was inside a shipping container in front of the prime ministers house. We will continue our struggle against the government, till our last breath, Khan said, calling for demonstrations across Pakistan. Qadri was in a bullet-proof car close to the scene, according television images. The government earlier struck a defiant note, issuing a statement saying that Sharif would not be stepping down. There is no question of resignation or proceeding on leave by Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, nor any member from the government side has made such suggestion, the statement said.Sharif had earlier dismissed the two-week old impasse as a tiny storm that would end soon.Khan alleges the 2013 general election that swept Sharif to power in a landslide was rigged as part of a conspiracy involving the former chief justice and thousands of election commission workers.Qadri has demanded wholesale changes to Pakistans political system, and called for an interim unity government while they are implemented. The leaders have drawn thousands to the streets of Islamabad, but their call has not mobilised mass support in a country of 180 million people.
