Football: Guarin strike ends Celtic's Europa dream

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Fredy Guarin struck a late winner for Inter Milan as Roberto Mancinis men qualified for the last 16 of the Europa League with a 4-3 aggregate victory over 10-man Celtic on Thursday.Celtic travelled to Italy hoping to build on the solid performance that earned them a 3-3 draw at Parkhead last week. However Ronny Deilas men were reduced to 10 men in the first half when Virgil Van Dijk saw red for a second bookable offence, leaving the visitors chasing the ball for much of the remainder before Guarin beat Hoops goalkeeper Craig Gordon two minutes from time with a long-range screamer.Deila refused to point the finger at Van Dijk, but said: We came through the game at Celtic Park at 3-3, and it was an even match before the sending off.Tonight, things happened in the game that ruined it for us. It made it very difficult for us and we had to work very hard defensively. We performed very well for 90 minutes and when it was 11 v 11 we were in control and had a very good chance. We just need to use this as motivation to get back on this stage, and hopefully we can get back into the Champions League.Inter coach Mancini was satisfied with the result but told Mediaset: We ran quite a risk at the start, a goal could have changed everything for us.Then the sending-off made it all easier. But there are still a lot of aspects we have to improve on, we have to take fewer risks in defence for example and stop losing balls that can offer our opponents counter-attacking opportunities.Celtics supporters travelled in their thousands and were given hope in the opening minutes when the ball landed at the feet of midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven but Inter keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo did well to block.Celtic had put in a battling performance in Glasgow last week, where on-loan Manchester City striker John Guidetti hit a last-gasp equaliser, and had planned for more of the same against the Nerazzurri. But those hopes were dented just after the half hour when Van Dijk, who was cautioned in the 26th minute for a strong challenge on Rodrigo Palacio, saw red following a tackle on striker Mauro Icardi.Celtic tried to plug the gap, with Efe Ambrose coming on to replace Mackay-Steven, but Inter almost immediately capitalised on their numerical advantage.Gordon was forced to pull off a great save from Icardis free kick and defender Andrea Ranocchia went close with a header from a corner before the half-time interval.Inter piled on the pressure after the restart with Hernaness shot inside the box forcing Gordon to save before the keeper blocked Icardis close-range effort.Deila replaced Guidetti with James Forrest just before the hour but the fresh legs did little to stem the Inter tide.Icardi and Palacio combined to set up and Xherdan Shaqiri but the Swiss internationals header went wide.Colombian international Guarins long-range drive went over Gordons crossbar minutes later and the keeper was cautioned for taking too long to take the goal kick.Celtics chances were few and far between, although Kris Commons, a late replacement for Stuart Armstrong, tested Carrizo with a long-range drive after taking possession just inside Inters half. With three away goals, Inter already had some assurance of making it to the last 16, although Guarin put the result beyond any doubt with a brilliant strike from distance in the 88th minute that left Gordon with no chance.

Football: Lukaku double eases Everton into last 16

Posted:

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Everton eased into the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday as Romelu Lukakus double inspired a 3-1 victory over Young Boys that sealed a 7-2 aggregate success.Roberto Martinezs side had virtually guaranteed their progress with a 4-1 win in the first leg in Switzerland and Belgian striker Lukaku, who netted a hat-trick in that victory, finished his one-man demolition job with two more goals in the return at Goodison Park. The Premier League club had fallen behind to Sekou Sanogos early goal, but Lukaku equalised with a penalty and struck again five minutes later before Kevin Mirallas scored to end the contest before half-time.With Liverpool, Tottenham and Celtic all crashing out on Thursday, Everton are flying the flag as the only British team left in the Europa League ahead of Fridays draw.Young Boys went ahead in the 13th minute when Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard could only parry Milan Vilotics effort straight to Sanogo, who scored from close-range despite the hosts appeals for offside. The Swiss side almost got themselves right back in the tie when Scott Sutters header hit the crossbar. But Lukaku ended their hopes with a quick-fire brace, the first coming from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after Steven Naismith was fouled by goalkeeper Marco Wolfli. The former Chelsea forward struck again on the half hour when he volleyed in Luke Garbutts cross. Then, after cheers rang around the ground in celebration of the exit of arch rivals Liverpool, Belgian forward Mirallas ran onto Darron Gibsons pass to slot in the third goal in the 42nd minute.

Aggressive owl sinks its talons into residents of Dutch town

Posted:

PURMEREND, Netherlands (AP) - The residents of one Dutch town are cowering under umbrellas after an aggressive eagle owl started swooping out of the sky, sinking its talons into them and gouging their flesh. The so-called terror owl has become a media sensation after attacking people in recent weeks in and around Purmerend, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Amsterdam. The hardest hit area in town is the Prinsenstichting assisted-living complex for people with disabilities.A spokeswoman for the complex, Lieselotte de Bruijn, said Thursday the owl has attacked up to 20 people there in recent weeks, sometimes causing injuries that required stitches. One Prinsenstichting resident who fell prey to the owl, Niels Verkooijen, told the Dutch news show Hart van Nederland that it was a painful experience. It was like having a brick laced with nails thrown at your head, he said. The town is warning residents to steer clear of the bird, which is reported to be 60-to-75 centimeters (24-to-30 inches) tall. It has applied for a permit to catch the owl, which is a protected species. Officials suspect the terror owl was once kept in captivity, as they say such aggressive behavior is not known among wild eagle owls and the species is not commonly found in the region. In the meantime, the town has advised residents not to approach the bird and to use umbrellas if they are walking in the evening, when the owl is most active. Marielle de Munnik of Rabobank said staff visited the Prinsenstichting complex this week to hand out dozens of umbrellas.Bas van Gelderen, who works at Prinsenstichting, saw an owl attack a resident, gouging her cheek with its talons.(Now) when we go out at night, or when its dark, we go out only with umbrellas, he said.

Oil tumbles on revived oversupply worries

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices fell sharply Thursday as the market appeared to do a double-take on the US oil inventories report showing US crude stockpiles hit a fresh record. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate for April, dived $2.82 to close at $48.17 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, more than wiping out the prior days rebound.European benchmark Brent North Sea crude for April delivery sank $1.58 to $60.05 a barrel in London. Both futures contracts had surged Wednesday after the US Department of Energy reported that US crude inventories had increased by a much-bigger-than-expected 8.4 million barrels in the week ending February 20, to a record 434.1 million barrels. For analysts, the market rally was due to traders focusing on the DoE reports positive elements for demand: falling gasoline and distillates stockpiles. But Thursday the market was back to weighing the basic fundamentals of global oversupply, made worse by high US production and weak demand in a slowing world economy.I think a lot of it is just a delayed reaction to yesterdays (DoE) reports. We had a nice rally, but I dont think yesterdays numbers were bullish at all, said IAF Advisors analyst Kyle Cooper.Crude oil has lost about 50 percent of its value since June. The global petroleum market may be in the process of rebalancing as low prices inhibit supply and encourage demand, but the market still has a clear current surplus, with much of the excess flowing into US inventories, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.

Dollar rises as US core inflation climbs

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar firmed against other major currencies Thursday as US inflation data pointed to rising pressures that could ease the way for the Federal Reserve to up interest rates. While falling crude-oil prices continued to dampen overall US inflation, data from the Labor Department revealed building pressures in a number of areas, including shelter and personal care. Some analysts are going to use these data to warn about deflation and say the Federal Reserve should hold off on raising rates. But the details of the report show we are not in the grips of deflation and the Fed should stay on track to start raising rates in June, said FT Advisors economists in a research note.Fed Chair Janet Yellen, in twice-yearly testimony to Congress this week, made it clear that the Fed was in no hurry to raise interest rates from near-zero, where they have been pegged for more than six years, as she prepared the ground for a hike this year. The dollar had fallen slightly in response. The Feds tightening path stands in contrast to that of the European Central Bank, which will embark next month on an unprecedented bond-purchase program, spending more than 1.0 trillion euros through at least September 2016 to try to revive growth in the sluggish eurozone.Vassili Serebriakov of BNP Paribas said there was no precise reason for the euros fall Thursday. It seems above all to reflect the still-high appetite of investors for the dollar, which outweighs fears linked to the testimony of Janet Yellen, he said.

Drinking coffee may lower risk of multiple sclerosis

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - People who drink four to six cups of coffee daily may be less likely to get multiple sclerosis, according to international research out Thursday.Caffeine intake has been associated with a reduced risk of Parkinsons and Alzheimers diseases, said lead author Ellen Mowry of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Our study shows that coffee intake may also protect against MS, supporting the idea that the drug may have protective effects for the brain, she added. The findings of a US and Swedish study -- released ahead of the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting in Washington -- each compared more than 1,000 MS patients to a similar number of healthy people. Researchers tracked how much coffee the subjects drank in the one, five and 10 years before symptoms began for those afflicted with MS.After accounting for other factors such as age, sex, smoking, body mass index and sun exposure, the Swedish study found that compared to people who drank at least six cups of coffee per day during the year before symptoms appeared, those who did not drink coffee had about a one and a half times increased risk of developing MS.Similar protective effects were seen among those who drank lots of coffee five to 10 years before symptoms appeared. The US study found that people who didnt drink coffee were also about one and a half times more likely to develop the disease than those who drank four or more cups of coffee per day in the year before symptoms started to develop.More research is needed to determine if caffeine in coffee has any impact on relapse or long-term disability due to MS, an incurable disease of the central nervous system that affects 2.3 million people worldwide. The study was funded by the Swedish Medical Research Council, the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute on Aging.

Co-hosts set for World Cup fireworks

AUCKLAND (AFP) - One of the World Cups biggest games pits high-flying New Zealand against four-time champions Australia at Aucklands Eden Park on Saturday in a match that could well be a dress rehearsal for the final.New Zealand are the team to beat in the tournament so far, with their eight-wicket thrashing of England last week their third win in as many pool matches after they defeated Sri Lanka and outlasted Scotland.Co-hosts Australia and New Zealand, staging the World Cup for only the second-time in the tournaments 40-year history, are both eyeing top position in Pool A so that they face a relatively weaker team in the quarter-finals.Having endured the disappointment of losing the semi-final to eventual winners Pakistan when the World Cup was last co-hosted by the trans-Tasman rivals in 1992, New Zealand look better-equipped to win the tournament this time around. In Brendon McCullum, New Zealand have an explosive batsman at the top of the order who can change the game as he proved during his whirlwind 25-ball 77 against England in Wellington. But Australia coach Darren Lehmann was confident his battery of fast bowlers could contain the New Zealand captain. He does hit them a long way, doesnt he? Lehmann said. He took the game on and he certainly does that, he plays a high-risk game, but theres a bit of a difference between 135km/h and 145 to 150km/h coming at him.Itll be a great challenge for both sides, hes going to certainly come at us and weve got some plans for him.Its going to be exciting -- New Zealand have been very impressive. Its going to be interesting to see how they play against us, Im sure theyll be really aggressive, so its going to be a cracker of A game.Australia are slightly under-prepared, as, after they too thrashed England, by 111 runs, their second pool match against Bangladesh was washed out without a ball bowled last weekend. And Australia captain Michael Clarke in particular is short of match practice following a hamstring operation, with his planned comeback dashed by the rain that drenched Brisbanes Gabba ground.Clarke, who is set to replace George Bailey, has appeared in only two one-day internationals in the past year, getting injured in both of them, and has not played in any international match for 11 weeks. But Clarke and his Australian team-mates have the knack of doing well when it matters. In David Warner and Aaron Finch, Australia have a dynamic pair of opening batsmen backed up by the fast-improving Steven Smith and Mitchell Marsh. Both teams will also look to exploit the unique dimensions of Eden Park, where top-edges or mis-hit shots can easily fly for fours and sixes given the grounds short straight boundariesHowever, both sides also have plenty of bowling firepower to call upon.New Zealand hope Tim Southee, who recorded his countrys best-ever ODI figures of seven for against England, recovers in time from a minor shoulder injury.Australia are likely to bolster their already impressive pace attack by bringing in Pat Cummins in place of Josh Hazlewood, with Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc the spearheads.New Zealand coach Mike Hesson tried to downplay the importance of Saturdays match by saying: Its just another one of the round robin games and obviously its going to be a good one.Australia will take heart from their impressive record of 11 wins out of 16 at Eden Park, including four of the last five.A sell-out 40,000 crowd is expected to watch the game, which will also see the winner take away the Chappell-Hadlee trophy that is contested when Australia and New Zealand meet in ODI cricket.

Two worlds collide as India face UAE

Posted:

PERTH (AFP) - Two worlds collide on Saturday when mighty India tackle the United Arab Emirates team of shipping clerks and airline staff, with at least two of the Gulf amateurs relishing the World Cup showdown at the WACA.All-rounder Krishna Chandran and wicket-keeper Swapnil Patil were both born in India but, frustrated by the pedestrian pace of their playing careers in the countrys over-crowded talent market, they decamped to the UAE where they could pursue both jobs and cricket.Chandran hails from Kerala and once featured for a Bangalore college club alongside Stuart Binny, who is a member of the India squad at the World Cup.Its going to be a big moment for people back home, 30-year-old Chandran, who moved to the Gulf in 2010, told wisdenindia.com.For people who saw me playing in my shorts, with a tennis ball, on the streets of my home village of Kollengode, its going to be a big thing to watch me on TV, playing against India, in a World Cup match, at a ground like the WACA.Chandran, who has become something of a curiosity at the World Cup due to his surname of Karate which adorns some of his playing gear, made a solid 34 runs in the opening loss to Zimbabwe before being dismissed for nought in the heart-breaking two-wicket defeat by Ireland.Patil is another Indian expat and he is looking forward to meeting up with star batsman Ajinkya Rahane who smashed 79 against South Africa.Patil and Rahane played in a variety of youth teams in Mumbai before the keeper decamped to Dubai. But the 29-year-old Patil, one of seven players in the UAE squad who only made their debuts last year after completing residency qualifications, has fond memories of his time spent with Rahane. As juniors we have spent much time together. Because of distances in Mumbai, we couldnt hang out together after games but Ajinkya is like a brother, Patil told the Indian Express.Once I moved from India, we lost contact. But one day at the Dubai airport, he was returning from Indias A tour to South Africa, it was like old times again.Reigning champions Indias much-vaunted batting line-up has impressed so far at the World Cup, but captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said his fielders deserved credit for restricting opposition totals. If we score 280, for example, we know with our fielding we can actually add another 15 runs. I think we have got some excellent fielders, and apart from that we have got fast bowlers who are above average fielders, said the skipper, whose team were livewires against South Africa.Overall Ive got plenty to play with.India have a mixed record at the WACA, winning four times and losing six, with one of those defeats coming against England during the tri-nations series in January. Now they may use Saturdays match to test their bench strength.Waiting in the wings are batsmen Ambati Rayadu, all-rounder Binny, young left-arm spinner Akshar Patel and seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The United Arab Emirates have made a mark at the tournament, with Pakistan-born Shaiman Anwar scoring the first hundred by a UAE batsman at a World Cup with 106 off 83 balls against Ireland.All-rounder Amjad Javed, who made 42 and took three for 60 in Brisbane, believes that performance, as well as Irelands win against the West Indies and competitive displays by Afghanistan and Scotland, should force a rethink by the International Cricket Council (ICC) who plan to cut the 2019 World Cup to 10 teams. They have to introduce more teams in the World Cup. The teams are not coming straightaway to the World Cup, they are going through a process and then they are qualifying for the tournament, Javed said.So I think they should increase the number of teams.

Sri Lanka unhappy with 'tiring' World Cup travel

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Sri Lanka flew back to New Zealand on Friday grumbling about their World Cup travel following a hectic dash across the Tasman sea for just one game even as some other teams enjoyed a relaxed schedule.Angelo Mathews men played their first two matches in New Zealand and then flew across to Australia to complete a 92-run drubbing of Bangladesh at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday.A few hours later they were back on the plane heading for Wellington where England await them for a crucial Pool A at the Westpac stadium on Sunday.Sri Lanka will then return to Australia for their last two league matches against Australia in Sydney on March 8 and against Scotland in Hobart three days later. It would have been nice to have finished New Zealand before coming to Australia, team manager Michael de Zoysa said. It certainly is inconvenient and tiring for the boys.Zoysa said with Friday spent in travelling, the team is likely to rest on Saturday which leaves them little time for serious training ahead of the England game. The match against Eoin Morgans side will be Sri Lankas third in eight days, having played Afghanistan last Sunday and Bangladesh on Thursday. In contrast, defending champions India are enjoying a relaxed itinerary.Mahendra Singh Dhonis men played their first two matches a week apart, clashing with Pakistan in Adelaide on February 15 before taking on South Africa at the MCG on February 22.Since then India have been based in Perth where they are staying for 12 days for two games against the United Arab Emirates and the West Indies, before flying to New Zealand on March 7 for their last two Pool B matches.

India's bereaved coach Fletcher to miss UAE game

PERTH (AFP) - India coach Duncan Fletcher has flown to South Africa to attend the funeral of his father-in-law and will miss Saturdays World Cup match against the United Arab Emirates in Perth, a team official said.Duncan has left for Cape Town to attend the funeral of his father-in-law, a typically terse one-line statement from the teams media manager R.N. Baba said.A source said Fletcher was expected to rejoin the squad ahead of the match against the West Indies, also in Perth, on March 6.In Fletchers absence, Indias training sessions will be handled by team director Ravi Shastri and the support staff of Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R. Sridhar.India have won both their opening matches so far against Pakistan and South Africa.

Fans smash eggs on heads in anger against chief selector

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (AP) - A handful of Pakistan cricket fans smashed eggs on their heads in anger Thursday after the countrys chief selector returned home from the World Cup in disgrace because he visited a casino.Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan ordered Moin Khan to come back after the former wicketkeeper was criticized by former players and parliamentarians for dining out at a casino last week in Christchurch.Going to gambling casinos, which are banned in the country, is unacceptable in Pakistani culture. The frustrated fans at the airport chanted Enemy of cricket Moin Khan and Get Moin Khan out as the chief selector sneaked out of the airport in the southern port city of Karachi without talking to the media or facing angry fans. When the fans couldnt see Moin at the airport they vented their anger by smashing eggs on their own heads.I am sorry with the entire nation for hurting them, Moin told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Karachi. It was totally unintentional to go to a casino for dinner and in hindsight I chose a wrong place.Moin, who was member of Pakistans winning World Cup squad in 1992, was also criticized by former cricketers when the PCB decided to send him with the team to Australia and New Zealand as chief selector. Pakistan got off to a bad start when it was beaten by India the sixth time in a World Cup match before losing its second Pool B match to the West Indies in Christchurch by 150 runs. Two days before the loss to the West Indies, Moin went to a casino for dinner with his wife and friends. Shaharyar spoke to Moin a number of times and also talked to the team management before deciding to call him home. The PCB is already planning to revamp the selection committee after the World Cup, so Moin could be out of a job.I dont want to jump to conclusions, said Moin, who is planning to talk to Shaharyar in a couple of days. Let me first meet with the chairman.

Fired-up West Indies eye win against South Africa

Posted:

SYDNEY (Agencies) - A buoyant West Indies will try to defy a run of recent poor results and extend their winning streak when they take on South Africa in another crucial Group B match in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup tonight at 8:30 am (PST) at the Sydney Cricket Ground.Only last month, the Caribbean side was completely outplayed by the Proteas on African soil, battered 4-1 in a five-match one-day international (ODI) series where they appeared out of their depth at times. The one-wicket win in Port Elizabeth last month was the first time West Indies had beaten South Africa in an ODI in nine years. And in the three previous bilateral series, South Africa swept the Caribbean side 5-0 in each. In their last World Cup meeting in India four years ago, South Africa came away with a comfortable seven-wicket triumph in Delhi.Importantly, however, the West Indies enter the contest on the back of a good run, having defeated Pakistan and Zimbabwe convincingly to compensate for their embarrassing loss to Ireland in their opening game.Against Pakistan, they amassed 310 and then wiped out their opponents for 160. They stepped it up even further against Zimbabwe, piling up an incredible 372 for two - the fifth highest total in a World Cup game - to trounce the Africans by 73 runs in Canberra.Coach Stuart Williams said the side had learnt a lot from the recent South Africa series and believes the next meeting between the two sides can be different. The series against South Africa was more about learning about our game and where we need to go, Williams pointed out.We were playing the number-one team in the world. Now, its not a series, its just a one-off game in the World Cup, so its a different mindset and were prepared, Williams said. The guys have been (supporting each other), they have been working hard, they have been responding to my coaching and weve been doing fine up to this day. While he praised the batting unit, he said the bowlers were now starting to find their momentum.Heartening for the West Indies camp has been the return to form of talisman Gayle. The usually prolific opener has struggled over the last 20 months, with just a half-century and an average of 14 to show for his efforts. However, he came big against Zimbabwe with a stunning 215 - the first double century in a World Cup and the fastest one ever - to end his worrying slump.Together with Marlon Samuels, who hit a career-best 133 not out, they put on 372 for the first wicket - the highest partnership for any wicket in ODIs.Williams also feels more comfortable with their bowling.I think we had a question mark over our bowling from the Ireland game and from since that (game), Jerome Taylor put up his hand, being the senior statesman and leading our attack. He added: From the Ireland game, it was good to see how the guys responded. I think it showed character. All of the senior guys stuck together - Darren Sammy, (Chris) Gayle, Marlon (Samuels) - and said guys, we can do this. Ireland was just a little blip. Were going to come back. Im just happy for the way the guys have responded since the Ireland game.
